Works quite well. It is easy to tension the ball head so that the camera can be renamed with a bit of force but will not slip when you let go of it.Already purchased the Manfrotto BeFree carbon fiber travel tripodd in late 21 but it came with a Sony plate, which I was not able to use with a telephoto lens. From the very non-specific information on Manfrotto?s website, I deduced that I had to order this head to replace that one since this one was RC2 compatible. It turned out that the two heads are identical and the only thing I needed was the RC2 compatible plate, but I ordered the entire tripod head with the RC2 plate because Manfrotto said that?s what I needed.I wish they would update their information to help us find the equipment we actually need so we don?t ... MoreWorks quite well. I searched in two different shops in NYC as well as online; I also read articles and reviews before purchasing this model from B&H. Their quality is due in no small measure to the stability of the tripod. I look forward to many trips with the scope mounted on the Manfrotto tripod.I recommend this tripod without reservation. I also commend the staff at B&H for sharing their knowledge, making good recommendations and their honest, straightforward assistance in helping me to select this excellent and reasonably priced tripod.

I have an older Manfrotto tripod and pan head for my Swarovski spotting scope. Wanted to also use it with my camera and super-telephoto lens. But Manfrotto's quick release didn't work with my camera's Arca-Swiss style foot. I wanted to keep the Manfrotto tripod mount for my scope. Manfrotto's 200 PL QR plate mounts directly to my camera when using a short lens. Attaching it to a RRS BS-LR-11 lever release clamp allows me to mount my camera's tripod foot and long lens as well. Much cheaper than buying new tripod legs and head.

Upgraded to a taller Manfrotto tripod and purchased this head as well. I've used it three times with my Nikon D850 and it works great. All adjustments were secure, easy to adjust and reliable. I've had excellent experiences with my older Manfrotto tripod and head, and this head seems just as solid.
This is my second Manfrotto ball head, and in all honesty, my first model (468MG) is better (has more range). But it cost twice as much in unadjusted 2011 dollars, so I would expect that. The important thing is that this head perfectly meets my needs, which are simple: This is part of a fixed overhead photography rig in my studio, one in which I will need only minor plane adjustments in daily use. A head that cost twice as much would've been a waste of money.Probably my only complaint is that the locking tab is plastic; metal would make me feel more secure. We shall see how that holds up.Also, I appreciated the extra quick release plate that came with it - you can never have too many spares.
The Manfrotto 496 ball head seems like a good tripod head. The base of the head is smaller than the older mounts for the Bogen/Manfrotto tripods so the set screws don’t really lock into anything. It’s got a locking/tension knob instead of a lever so it seems with big objects on top it might be a little more of a challenge to reach the knob. It’s got a separate pan lock that is a very small knob and though it is useful to have a separate release for the pan, especially for video, I think I would prefer just one locking lever for everything. Other than these preferences it seems like a great head though it seems hard to believe it will hold a 22lb object mounted on it. That said, the ball head seems to lock well and be sturdy. I do have a concern about making sure whatever I put on it locks properly into the quick release. I haven’t had any problems yet, I just got the ball head, but the lever on the quick release seems like it might not engage the quick release plate without a good visual double checking. I’m also using the older 200PL quick releases. I am a former professional photographer however I’m currently an artist/painter looking to use this to support an outdoor painting easel.
Several features are much better than previous models!First, the 200PL-PRO plate that accompany's this ball head will fit both 200PL mounts as well as Arca Swiss mounts, making the need to replace my 200PL plates I have on all cameras & lens collar rings not necessary! If I ever switch to Arca Swiss mountings on any ball heads, these plates will mount to them! ...Second, the friction adjustment for the ball head is now within the ball head locking knob & is really easy to set. Plus, this adjustment feature will not totally unscrew from the knob as my older ball heads friction knob has done several times, losing the knob & screw that holds the knob onto the ball head ...Love this small but mighty ball head set up! ...
When I got a Manfrotto monopod/tilt mount system for my Tamron 150-600 long lens, I was so impressed with iManfrotto's approach to quick release that I bought this Manfrotto ballhead to replace the Acratech ballhead that has been on my tripod for 2-3 years. Wow. I should have got this ballhead in the first place. By comparison, the Manfrotto is lighter weight , less bulky, far easier to use and holds tighter. The camera with Tamron long lens on a mounting ring is the heaviest equipment that goes on this ballhead atop a Giotto MT9260 tripod. While I have to be careful not to bump the mounted system and cannot tilt the view to extremes, the camera/lens/mounting ring unit stays balanced and does not drift. While I have to be careful not to bump the mounted system and cannot tilt the view to extremes, the camera/lens/mounting ring unit stays balanced and does not drift. With the previous ballhead, the camera would drift with my lighter weight Nikon 150-300 zoom. The extra locking mechanism with the 496 ballhead quick release is a big plus. On several occasions before, I came close to losing the camera/lens when the quick release connection of the previous unit was apparently not as secure as I thought. Finally, having the same quick mount system for both monopod and tripod provides welcomed interchangeability as the scene and/or subject changes. Great design, Manfrotto engineers.
When Sarasota High School's photography program was gifted with an older tripod a few days ago I realized it was missing the quick release plate and the gifter could not locate it. Live chat with an expert at B&H found the piece, ordered immediately and we just successfully coupled it with the tripod! The students were using it five minutes later! Thank you B&H for the expertise and thank you, Manfrotto for continuing to support antiquated products!
I have not tried it in the field as yet. At home it seems to be well built and holds my camera with its standard 24-205mm steady. The safety lock is not as convenient as previous models, but that is not a deal breaker. If it hold up and works with my long lens, then it will get 5 stars.
