Dysfunctional Tilt adjustment

I own a handful of Manfrotto heads. This one has the worse tilt pressure adjustment I have ever experienced. There is no enough pressure for the weigh specified on the specs. I have to use the lock adjustment to get tilt working with the heavy camera rig, GH6 on a RS3 Pro/Tilta ring, I had planned to use this for. Even as a place to park the rig when it is not hand held I must be careful to lock the tilt when the balance is perfect. It is probably destined for eBay when I find something useful. Perhaps the 509HD under my Teleprompter & Studio rigs are what I should have bought.

Regardless, I love the functionality of this and the ability to change both pan and tilt fluid drag.Highly recommend, would buy again.if you are considering this purchase, definitely look at pairing it with a monopod such as the manfrotto mvmxpro or the tiffen steadycam air 15/25. Both have stabilizing bases/ feet to take full control of range of motion with this fluid head.

Great mechanics, hard to reach tighteners

The same goes for the tightener knob that tightens the mount rails. As soon as I mounted a camera to the head, I slid it to a center position and went to tighten the sliding tightener, but wasn't able to because the tip of the knob was obstructed by hitting the bottom of the camera. I had to place both hands, one on the detachable mount and one on the head, then push it off the rails while holding down the button. This is to say that a single-handed removal of your mounted camera is just about impossible, so if you wanted to take your left hand to grab the camera and your right hand to dismount it with the button and slide it off, it wouldn't cooperate due to friction. Overall this is still a great head unit though.

I am using this 520AH for Digiscoping and it is perfect! Perhaps a little overkill but that is just what I was after. Out in harsh weather, I get solid stills, super smooth motion for following game, just perfect. Need something to keep your scope quiet and track with silky smooth motion, this is your Head.

I own 2 of these tripod heads. At first, it was a big step up from my cheaper tripod. They layout always bothered me from day one. The tilt lock being on the right side and the pan lock being tucked away in the middle are such odd placements and intuitively make little sense. I thought I'd get used to it but no, it's still annoying some time later. The handle was fine at first but once it accidentally feel out one time, it's never really been the same. It's hard to adjust, it gets stuck sometimes which requires me to completely unscrew it and readjust. For some reason the bubble leveler isn't accurate and I haven't figured out how that's scientifically possible? [Rewarded Review] Budget price... Great quality
10 March 2023

While bigger than expected it is one solid performer for this price point. I am using it with a Nikon D4s and Nikon. 150-500mm lens on an Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod and it handles it with no issues. The ease of setting for the shot is beyond anything else I've ever used and I'm sorry I haven't invested in one of these heads before now. You can go from a fluid panning tripod for video to.a set stable tripod for photography with a minor adjustment making getting the shot so much easier than any other tripod head I have used before. .

[Rewarded Review] I Like the Head, But....
31 May 2024

Like another reviewer, I am using this head with a DSLR, the Pentax K-1 Mark II. I find the Manfrotto head smooth and the adjustable tension to be a great feature. What I don't like is the tightening knob that secures the top plate to the tripod head. As you can see in the photo, the wide body of the camera interferes with the operation of the knob. It is a spring loaded screw but I find the space between the bottom of the camera and the tilt tightening knob too confining to adjust. Aside from that engineering faux pas, the head is great. Like another reviewer, I will replace the knob with a one inch M-6 set screw and use an Allen wrench to tighten and loosen it. B and H, as always, was great and their shipping is lightening fast!

12 April 2024

Purchased as an alt-az head for a small telescope. I looked at a couple of alt-az heads specific for astronomy but the 502AH looked like a better tool for the job as well as a better deal. I have a 20+ year old Manfrotto tripod that I'm very happy with so decided to give it a try. So far, I love it. Very smooth movement and holds position at 60 deg elevation angle with a 5ish lb load.

I didn't notice the lack of reviews when I made the purchase, just the Gold #1 Seller icon. Unfortunately the head was purchased about 45 days ago, so this head is no longer eligible for returns. I won't make that mistake again. I ordered the head and tripod separately before I realized they could be purchased as a kit. When I attempted to move the red pan ring to adjust the fluid drag (with ring the lock loosened), the ring would not budge in either direction. The ring is frozen in a position such that there is absolutely no drag or tension when panning which means you have no control over the pan tension. The only work-around is to tighten the ring lock nob accordingly to apply tension. That's crazy. An internet search revealed that some individuals who purchased this item also had the same frozen pan ring issue. Obviously, we are in the minority, but obviously there are also quality control issues associated with certain copies of this fluid head.Regarding the Manfrotto MT055XPRO3 Aluminum Tripod, know that the top plate has only one set screw instead of the usual three. The Manfrotto 502AH Pro Video Head fluid head manual shows the head being mounted to a tripod with a top plate of three screws, not one. Thus, the mating of this head with this tripod's base plate is not as stable as it should be and is counter to what the fluid head manual illustrates. Therefore, I'd avoid the pairing of the bundled Manfrotto 502AH Pro Video Head with Flat Base and the Manfrotto MT055XPRO3 Aluminum Tripod. I can't recommend either individually either for the reasons stated above.I've spent tens-of-thousands of dollars at B&H since the early 2000s. Fortunately, this my first bad experience. It's my mistake that I didn't inspect the fluid head sooner, but I didn't have a tripod to mount it to until 30 days after I purchased the fluid head. A costly lesson learned and a level of trust lost with the usually outstanding B&H.

First off, this is a HEAVY head. It's my one and only gripe about it. If you're back-packing, look somewhere else. Other than that, this is THE best head I've used for long-lens BIF photography.Honestly, I'd not considered video heads as an option to replace my Manfrotto 3030 purchased in the way-back days. But after a few aborted attempts to upgrade that relic, I read about this head and decided to invest. I'm so glad I did.-with ball bearings, it's smooth as ice.-the bridging technology design gives me the ability to tilt a full 180degrees. My old head would block out at ~ 45 degrees...not good when the BIFs are flying straight overhead.-the sliding plate on the (very) large base gives me the ability to position the center of gravity over the center tube ... MoreFirst off, this is a HEAVY head. My old head would block out at ~ 45 degrees...not good when the BIFs are flying straight overhead.-the sliding plate on the (very) large base gives me the ability to position the center of gravity over the center tube much better than I could before, ensuring that the tripod is much more stable, regardless of my lens configuration.-the fluid drag system lets me dial in as much resistance as I'd like in any planar movement...I personally like it a little looser, so I can pivot and swivel to follow the action. By setting it looser, I was actually able to swivel/pivot with my hands on the camera body, not the control arm. I also found that tucking the control arm under my arm gave me the ability to move the camera with my body. It's like I'm wearing this tripod head!-finally, in spite of differing opinions on the subject I WAS able to secure a quick release adaptor plate to this head, so that I could use it with every piece of kit currently outfitted with the standard Manfrotto plate (Manfrotto 323 RC2 System Quick Release Adapter with 200PL-14 Plate). fyi - the trick is to position the quick release at the very back of the plate. It overhangs but you can still position the slider bar quite a bit)My net: I LOVE this head. Even given that it is going to add a few more pounds to my kit, it's weight I'll gladly pack.
