An excellent portable take on this type of game

On the flavor side, the story that sets up the game is not particularly deep or interesting, but individual character moments are still fun and charming, and particular characters will definitely leave memorable impressions even if the overall story does not. On the gameplay side, however, is where Mario + Rabbids really shines. The weapon damage types and cover system are easy to pick up, and the difficulty ramps up in a way that continues to challenge without overwhelming you. As you upgrade your characters and their weapons, the characters' individual strengths start to shine through, but never in a way that felt like the game was pushing me to use a particular character, or be too attached to my existing party when I unlocked someone new. The individual battles within the campaign are usually short enough to be convenient to play in bite-size chunks, which worked well for me since I played most of this game on-the-go in handheld mode. I would definitely recommend it if you are a fan of games like Xcom and want a sort of lite version to play on-the-go, if you are looking for a good intro. to the genre, or if you just want to see a wacky Mario-inspired take on it.

This game came far out of left field. Mario and crew with guns? In a tactical rpg a la x-com or jagged alliance? What were the designers smoking when they thought of this? Nevertheless, it's executed flawlessly. No RNG frustrations, no save scumming necessary. Lots of little nods to various Mario lore and history. Challenging scenarios, solid skill progression where I never felt over nor under-powered, and great artwork. The plot is horribly contrived but who cares. My 3 year old was riveted with every battle and she'd be the one composing the team. Lastly, Rabbids came before Minions and it's a crime that Minions have become so popular.

I absolutely love this game. I have never played anything like this, no XCOM style games, no games at all really except for just really easy stuff, games that don't require much thought, like Mario Kart. I didn't think I would like this one, but I gave it a try. I'm 37 years old if that makes a difference, but I would say that this is a family-friendly game. There is some potty-humor, some flatulence and sometimes Beep-O (the leader that looks like a robotic vacuum) has an attitude and he may swear but the swear words are in this form - #%&$! - and it only happens 2, maybe 3 times. I think that would just fly over a young child's head. There isn't any blood or gore and it's not incredibly violent - sure, you're "shooting" and blowing up characters, but it's tasteful ... MoreI absolutely love this game. There isn't any blood or gore and it's not incredibly violent - sure, you're "shooting" and blowing up characters, but it's tasteful - they just sort of disappear instead of piling up around you. Some of the puzzles are surprisingly difficult, or maybe I'm just not nearly as smart as I thought I was. I had more trouble figuring a few of those out than I would like to admit, lol.I was frustrated at first, even though looking back the game starts off incredibly easy. I just had no idea what I was supposed to be doing. It definitely gives you a chance to learn the ropes, so if you are like me and have never played this style game, you CAN easily pick it up. It does get increasingly difficult, and pretty quickly. If you are skilled at these types of games, I wouldn't worry about it being too easy altogether. Once I got the hang of it I could not put it down. I just beat the final boss last night and I was thrilled to find that there was more to the game after that - you can go back and do more things and find hidden "Ultimate Challenges".The animation is fantastic. The scenery is beautiful, the characters are adorable, the bosses are really cool. Rabbid Peach is my favorite - she's a social media obsessed diva. She's always stopping to take selfies of herself with her cell phone and when the team loses a match or challenge she yanks off her wig and crown (off camera) and throws them towards the other 2 team members. It's just really cute, I found myself laughing out loud a lot during gameplay. The soundtrack is marvelous.I have come across a couple of glitches in the game - the "A" button sometimes stops working and I can't do anything - I can bring up the menu with the "+" button but it's just scrolling through really quickly, I can't select any of the options. All I can do is close the software and start again at the last saved point. During the last few chapters of the game I had some trouble with the software closing on its own - an error message that said something like this software has encountered an error and needs to close. Hopefully, those things are fixed with future updates or patches, if that's possible.I am very happy that I went outside of my comfort zone and gave this game a try. I hope there are more like it in the future. I give it a 10 out of 10. :-)

What can I say about this strange game? A turn-based tactical strategy game starring an unholy blend of Ubisoft & Nintendo properties shouldn't work, but it does, & it does it really well.I can't really explain the surreal feeling I had when I saw Mario pick up a gun for the first time. This is (probably) the closest thing to an XCOM game we'll get on the Switch, & I'm okay with that (I'm pretending Fire Emblem doesn't exist for this part of the review, because I'm really trying to gas this game up). Peach is so B.A. in this (we love to see it), & the bosses were really fun. Some genuine laugh out loud moments in here, if not just from occasionally remembering the absurdity of it all while you're playing it. I'm just really glad that Ubisoft came up with this & that Nintendo actually let them make it.It never got repetitive for me, but I am a big fan of turn-based tactical strategy games like this, so your own results may vary.My main complaints are the controls in the overworld/out-of-battle areas are a little weird to get used to, & the lack of online play. I'm imagining a sequel with full online multiplayer battles & a stage editor a-la Mario Maker & Smash with shareable levels. A dream! A literal DREAM!If you like XCOM & you have a Switch, this is a no-brainer. If you've never played a turn-based strategy game, but you think you might be interested in the genre, this is a great way to get your feet wet before diving into the deep end with Fire Emblem: Three Houses chained to your ankles.

Mario XCOM

Probably the most common comparison made for this game. In case you are not familiar with XCOM or its gameplay style, essentially it's a turn based strategy game. Usually two teams, either controlled by two players, or in story mode - one player controlled team versus AI controlled team. The player can control his/her team selecting one character at a time, pointing where to move in the map (viewed from a high camera angle), choosing to then attack an enemy, or use character specific abilities - heal, increase defense, increase attack, or some other character unique power.Typically, the flow of the game is slow due to the individual team control and strategic approach, which makes this genre not as popular as shooter or action games. For those of us who enjoy ... MoreProbably the most common comparison made for this game. Story progresses in a linear open world style. Players can revisit the worlds and replay chapters for better scores. In between actual battle segments, the player can explore parts of the open world, solve basic puzzles to unlock collectible art or points currency for upgrades.Aside from strategic components, characters use megaman like arm-cannons to attack enemies. Family friendly animated violence. They can be acquired with in-game currency.Characters for the team can be chosen and upgraded, each with their unique abilities, such as Luigi being a sniper, Rabbid Peach a healer, and Rabbid Luigi a tech character. The roaster inspires strategy and experimentation that extends the replay value.Visuals are cartoon style like most Mario games, but in HD, and unique artistic approach from Ubisoft's team. Soundtrack is fantastic with epic and goofy orchestrated soundtrack that perfectly fits either exploration or battles. The game is a great addition to anyone with a nintendo switch who likes strategy games. It is fun and family friendly, offering versus and cooperative mode with options that allow for playing with kids, all the way to technically challenging settings for experienced players.Minor negatives for this near perfect game are that teams can only have 3 characters max, and that occasionally enemies are able to shoot your team from angles that are not physically possible (shot is clearly seen going through a wall). Though that happened only twice and didn't distract much from overall fun experience.

Unexpected crossover, amazing results!

At first glance, this game would appear to be of dubious quality; the Rabbids franchise is polarizing to say the least, and Ubisoft is very hit and miss as a developer. However, Ubisoft manages to marry the best parts of the Mario franchise with the least annoying parts of the Rabbids franchise to make an incredible grid-based tactical RPG. This game is way more than "Mario and Rabbids... with guns!"; it sucks you into its gorgeous environments, its silly stories and sight gags, and its upgrade system. Being able to choose from a number of characters is great, though always having to have Mario plus one Rabbid in your three-person party is a bit limiting. This game absolutely packs enough content to be a $60 game, but Ubisoft has repeatedly had this game on sale for well under $20. Unless you're super-eager to play it right now, a discount will always be around the corner.

Unique, Entertaining, and Fun. MUST OWN!!!

Let me start by saying that this is probably the best and most comical RTS (Real Time Strategy) game you will ever play. I have roughly 150 hours in the game which includes playing the optional DLC…which is great by the way. Well worth the price. Anyway, this game is both easy and extremely difficult and it all depends on you. Let me explain. While it can be easy to complete most levels, getting perfect (completing a level under a certain number of turns with no deaths) completions are typically very difficult. Whether or not that is necessary depends solely on your playstyle. The story makes sense and is very funny. Plenty of hilarious cutscenes to see. The game routinely makes fun of Nintendo and its characters. Hell the Rabbids are essentially parodies of the Nintendo’s characters. Spoiler alert: Rabbid Peach is the star of the show and no, she does NOT need saving. There are plenty of collectibles, challenges, secrets, and puzzles if that is your thing. Trust me. Many of them will take real concentration. Do NOT be fooled by the game’s simplistic and childlike appearance as many of you adults will struggle to complete some of its challenges and puzzles. Outside of the story, the best part about this game is its mechanics. Most RTS games typically allow you to only perform one action per character per turn. This game allows you to perform many actions per turn and in any order. For example, while using Mario you can move and Dash one enemy, continue moving towards your teammate, jump off of them to headstomp another enemy, then bouning behind cover. From there you can activate/use a special, then shoot your enemy of choice if in range. Another thing to note is the games personality and character. Everyone one the battlefield has so much personality and quirkiness. Enemies in front of your intended target will duck to avoid being hit like someone NOT willing to risk their life. When the targeted enemy knows your attack will not hit them, they hide behind the wall with a confident evil smile. These little details make the game better in some many ways. The character upgrade system is diverse and forgiving. If you took a path to unlock a specific upgrade that you was necessary to complete the last level, but is now completely useless in your current one, you can reset your upgrade purchases and start anew without losing anything you have earned. The weapons are very cool and do make a difference. They also contain funny names and comical descriptions. Weapons stats/bonuses are simple and easy to understand.Concisely, this is one of the most unique and entertaining experiences released over the last few years. If you like a challenge and like to laugh, pick this game up.

Unorthodox idea becoming a success!

If you were to look me in the face and say that a game mostly surrounding the Rabbids would be great, then I would think you were absolutely crazy, as the thought of mixing an unorthdox group of insane rabbit-like creatures and with Nintendo may seem to insane to be a true idea, but we were all wrong. Not only is the gameplay surprisingly addictive, but the visuals, characters, and soundtrack are all top notch. A few cons were Rabbid Peach's personality being that of an aggressive, stereotypical modern phone-obsessed teenage girl, and people pretty much dismissing how Mario felt during the "Phantom" moments. But in the end, if you really think about, the Toads, Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi, may be one of the first true friends, the Rabbids have. We've seen how others react to the Rabbids' chaotic antics in the past. Very few tolerated and befriended them, but the Mushroom Kingdom Residents befriending the Rabbids takes this up a notch. all fitting with an important lesson in not being afraid of what you don't understand.I actually recommend this game to those who haven't played it yet, because even if you're skeptical, like we all were before, don't be, as this game is a ton of fun and way better than it has any right to be.

good, different sort of Mario game

Enjoyable game. Very different gameplay style than any other type of Mario game, but I liked it. I hate how I didn't get Yoshi (my favorite Mario character) until very nearly the end of the game (so I didn't get much chance to use him), how you're forced to keep Mario on your team (which is annoying because you're only allowed three team members at once, which means you have to do more cycling to get to use all the other characters), and how you're forced to have at least one Rabbid on your team (so if you want to make a team of Mario, Luigi, and Peach, too bad). For me, this was a "play through the main story once and then give it away" game. If you have someone else to play with, you might get more time out of it since it does have a co-op mode.

Love This Game! Honestly, The DLC Is So Good. The Game Also Has A Pretty Decent Story Along With Creative Combat. There are some puzzles to solve on the map and also challenges. The game was pretty hard at some points but I don't mind because as long as you buy good weapons and are smart about it, it's not too hard. Overall It Is Really Good. The length of the game is decent (especially counting the DLC). The only thing keeping this from 5 stars is the pricing, the game is good and all but I don't think 60$ is that worth it. (The DLC Price Is Reasonable IMO Though). The Rabbids Are Also Pretty Funny and The Difficulty Is Just Right. The Versus Mode and Buddydome Are Also Really Cool. So Yeah I Would Give It 4.5 Stars.
