Beautifully Made Shell!

Just got this - fits great (5'11'', 185lb, Sz L), and is made with attention to all the details. The photos here don't do this shell justice. Fabric is just the right weight and feel for a rain/wind shell. Heavy enough for mid-temp weather and not at all bulky to add layers underneath. Too bad these pics are just glamour shots and don't show the inside of the jacket: seams, zippers and pockets are magnificent pieces of craftsmanship. I AM IMPRESSED! Can't wait for some rain (for so many reasons here in CA, and now to wear my new Marmot shell, too). After so many other meh experiences shopping on-line, if you couldn't tell, this jacket has made me joyous! And, in my experience, Marmot stands behind their gear, which is also nice. Fits good, but very poor waterproof/breathability

The fit of the jacket is good, with enough room to put some extra layers underneath it.But at the most important part the jacket fails in mine opinion: that is the waterproof and breathability. In lighter rain for about 30-60 minutes it will keep you dry. But longer time or heavier rains, the jacket starts to let water through, especially at the shoulders and arms. Walked couple of hours in rain and was soaked.Breathability is poor as well. When start sweating, the inside of the jacket get wet quickly. Unless the zippers under your arms.I expect more from this jacket for its price. Especially because for it's Gore-Tex, which claims to be waterproof and breathable.

I love this shell. I purchased one size up from what I usually wear because I used it through the winter as an outer shell over a down jacket. It is a little roomy when I wear it over lighter layers or as a stand-alone, but I like that. It is the perfect balance of being a light shell but still has enough thickness to be durable. Performs phenomenally for blocking the wind. The hood and arms are very roomy, and there is great mobility. I also use it as a wind/rain shell in my drift boat in the warmer months. I again appreciate the roominess for wearing over waders and fishing gear and the ease of mobility for rowing and maneuvering in the boat. Even though it is somewhat no-frills and not flashy, it is a great workhorse shell for any number of outdoor endeavors. It ... MoreI love this shell. It works!
23 December 2023

Not sure why it took me so long to invest in this rain jacket. 2.5 layers of gortex is the best you can get on the market for this type of jacket. It is a little warm when it is raining when it's 30 degrees Celsius outside (but at those temps you could wear a bathing suit and have a shower) but for 20ish degrees and cooler this jacket is everything and more you could need. So far no leaks like I've experienced with most rain jackets. I still keep a poncho with me just in case but have never needed it with this jacket. Must buy item

nice materials, quality construction, poor hood design...I have had this jacket for a short time, therefore I cannot comment on the longevity or performance in various rain conditions. It has kept me dry so far...Initally, the jacket seems to be made of high qualtiy materials and the construction is excellent. Everything is crisp and straight, with no loose threads. The color (artic blue) is sharp. Where this jacket falls short is in its hoods design. First, there is not any ablility to roll the hood down into the collar or detatch it. This is problematic if you have activity or job where you need peripheral vision and wear a rain hat. (Tucking the hood inward, eventually allowed rain to leak into the jacket.) Second, to sinch the hood, you will need to reach behind your head and pull on a bungie cord sticking out the back of the hood. (Yeah, the cords just hangs out the back of the hood - not a natural movement nor nice look.) Had the hood been designed better, I would most likely have rated this jacket at 5 stars. However, wrangling with the hood everytime wear this jacket makes it quite cumbersome and disappointing.

Nice Jacket, Great Features, Works Well in Rain
7 March 2023

I've worn this jacket on a lot of adventures. From multi-day rain storms in the High Uintah Wilderness Area, to Florida tropical storms, this jacket comes with me whenever I need some quick protection from the weather. It has not disappointed me in wet conditions. GoreTex just works. The hood has a great fit because of the adjustable draw cord, and pockets are well placed. It can feel pretty hot inside when the temperature and humidity are high, but maybe I need to experiment a little with the pit zip ventilation more. And IMHO this is a good looking jacket. I am 6' 2" 190 lbs and the LARGE fits great.

Resilient Gear
20 October 2023

Bought this jacket about a month and a half ago and since then have been able to wear it in Chicago's usual summer into autumn weather. Will the fit is a bit big, the waterproofing is true to its word as was stuck in a few downpours and managed to stay dry. It is worth the investment and also does a nice job keeping the wind at bay if layered properly as I found out after a few chillier mornings recently. If you are looking for a quality rain jacket with a high return on your investment then look no further. Enjoy.

Tangelo Hardshell
2 December 2023

I couldn't resist buying a second Marmot Minimalist when I saw the tangelo color. It looks great in person - just the right shade to be sporty and visible on cloudy, rainy days. If it had a 3-layer fabric, it would officially be a hardshell. Its feature set at the price has high value: zippered outer pockets with flaps, pit vents, adjustable hood, 50D face fabric, and Gore-Tex - just what you need in a do-everything rain jacket that is built to last. It has ample room to accommodate insulating and base layers underneath. It joins my blue Minimalist for wind-proof, water-proof, durable weather protection that looks and feels great! And a shout-out to Backcountry.com for speedy deliveries and great customer service!

Too Short
16 May 2023

I am 5' 10' and weight 175 lbs with a 32" waist with a 31" inseam. I wear a large in most t-shirts and hoodies (my drier makes everything a medium/large) and I bounce between a large and a medium in jackets depending on cut and purpose. I ordered this jacket in a medium. The sleeve length and fit was perfect except is was just a little too short. I compared it side by side with the Patagonia Torrentshell in the same size and the Patagonia was about an 1.25" longer in the front and about 3" longer in the back. If I bent over the Marmot would easily expose my belt line. The fabric is nice and I am sure it is plenty capable when taken care properly but it did not feel as durable as the Patagonia. The zipper on the Marmot is much smaller than the Patagonia. The hood on the Marmot fits better without adjustment but has less adjustment with only one toggle on the back that tightens the crown and opening at the same time. The Patagonia has one toggle on the back and a draw string on both sides of the hood. I am sure the Marmot is a fine jacket but the main issue for me was the length. It IS as short as it looks on the model photos found everywhere online. I was worried about length when I ordered it but I got it on sale and will always lean towards a Gore-Tex product when I have choice. I did however end up returning it and buying the Patagonia Torrentshell. If you are closer to 5'7-5'8 and between 155-175 or have an abnormally short torso this jacket would work for you. If I had gone to a large I would have swam in it. The medium did give me enough room to layer and use as 4-season shell but all the base layers I tried were longer that this jacket. That is not ideal when trying to stay dry.

You WILL BE disappointed
30 December 2023

Don’t waste your time… this jacket will fail you and you will be disappointed. The 2nd time wearing this in light rain, the jacket became completely soaked in through the shoulder seam area. Even buying this at 50% off, I’m still upset.Compared to the previous model, the angled zipper design makes it difficult to access the side pockets. The drawcord on the hood is a pain to adjust. I couldn’t get it to loosen without taking the entire jacket off. The single pull drawcord at the waist is also less user-friendly than the previous version and I don’t believe will last long. The older model had dual tensioners which made for easier adjustability.
