I bought this jacket around 2-3 years ago and was very happy with it until the first time I had to use it in the rain. The jacket is very light and packs down very small but suffers from the crinkly crisp-packet sound of 2-layer paclite goretex. The first time I had to use it in anger it rained possibly the hardest I'd ever seen it rain. The chest pocket was fairly damp inside and water has started to wick upwards from the sleeves. Since then, in sustained rain (even if it is fairly light), the jacket soaks through to the point of wetting my clothes underneath. This happens even if I'm not working particularly hard and so I know its not just sweat condensing on the inside of the jacket. Speaking of sweat, this jacket really is not breathable at all. Even light exercise results in you feeling sweaty despite the large pit zips. I would not recommend this jacket for anything other than dealing with brief, light rain spells. Also, one of the patches over the inside of the pit-zip has started to peel.

GREAT MATERIALSI can confirm the jacket performs well in intense wind and rain. While you may feel buffeted by the wind, the Gore-Tex material prevents you from the chill you feel. Similarly with the rain, it hasn't soaked through on me. The pit zips are great at venting. Despite the breathability rating, on a moderate bike ride with the pit zips open, there was quite a lot of build up of perspiration on the inside of the back area. The front however was dry.STRANGE "OPPOSITE" FEATURESFor a men's jacket the chest pocket and zipper are reversed and feel strange. Especially when layering, zipping this outer layer after having zipped up a vest or other jacket (i.e. zipper pull on the left), there's a moment of confusion when the zipper pull is on the right; same goes for zipping it down—you're expecting to hold the zipper pull and remove the other end with your right, but all you end up doing is just pulling the jacket.CHEST POCKETThe chest pocket is again something to get used to with it being on the right hand side as opposed to the left where the majority of chest pockets are. The pocket is unusually deep. Not necessarily an issue (I'd prefer the pocket bigger than not). Yet the zip/opening doesn't go all the way. This is potentially intentional so as to prevent things from falling out. However, when trying to get objects like a phone, pen etc out of the pocket, you butt up against the zip/smaller opening, rather than being able to be removed with ease.GOOD MOBILITY, BUT SHORT JACKET LENGTHWhile I usually buy/wear small in items closer to my body, I opted for a medium as the outer layer, so I could appropriately move if I have multiple layers on. The 'angel wing' gussets on this jacket are great and allow unconstricted movement. However, the length over the jacket is a good 2-3 inches shorter than any other regular/run-of-the-mill jacket that I own. It may not be a deal breaker for others, but I wish there were jacket length measurements online that I could refer to. I may not have bought it knowing the opposite zip, opposite pocket and overall length.
I'm conflicted because I really like this jacket...I love the fit, cut, and features of this jacket and it works great over a down hoodie. There is 1 thing I have issue with...and it's kind of a big deal...It might start out waterproof, but it didn't stay waterproof. This jacket soaks right through after a short time outdoors in the rain. Its not at the seams either- the water just soaks right through the fabric. You buy gore-tex and you expect strong waterproofing for the life of the jacket... I mean, isn't that the reason you'd spend extra for gore-tex? Not really sure if it's my fault or the fabric itself, but the gore-tex waterproofing just didn't hold up for me.Another thing I would like to see is the fabric be a little more durable. Managed to get 2 slices in the sleeve and have no idea how. Wish there was a durability guide for stuff like this.My impression at first was this jacket is MOST EXCELLENT, but in time mine failed to do it's job. I found it was good for medium/heavy use within the first year, but it looks like it's gonna be light use from here on out.
While I was preparing for a trip to climb Granite Peak, the highest point in Montana, I was reviewing gear to minimize weight. I realized that my 20+ year old coat was far too heavy. It didn't take long to find that the minimalist was exactly what I needed in a waterproof outer layer. At less than 15oz it's one of the lightest on the market, especially for a GoreTex coat. It fits loosely enough that you can fit a fleece under it, but not so loose that you're swimming in it. Zippered pockets that also temporarily close with velcro are a plus. The only thing I don't need are the pit zips; every coat seems to have them and I've never found them necessary.Overall it's an awesome coat that's a great price and I'm certain it will be shown in my write-up of the ... MoreWhile I was preparing for a trip to climb Granite Peak, the highest point in Montana, I was reviewing gear to minimize weight. I was chasing a Gore-Tex jacket after an older jacket lost its water repellence, and I could not chemically restore it. This is a very lightweight jacket, it folds away very nicely in the hood for storage, and tucks away in the hood of my pack so I forget it's there. The cut is very simple with no excess materials or mesh lining. I was on the larger size of the Small per the fit guide and purchased online, so went with a medium, but I probably should have gone the small size as the arms come down over my wrist even when the cuffs are folded over, and it hangs a little loosely. I'll have no issues getting it over bulky winter clothes and I'm confident I'll be well protected from the weather despite only having used in in light rain so far.The hood has three ... MoreI was chasing a Gore-Tex jacket after an older jacket lost its water repellence, and I could not chemically restore it. I can get it to lock down tight around my head with just my eyes and nose exposed, with a decent brim overhead. I feel confident it will work well in a tropical Queensland rainstorm.
Comfy, keeps me dry in the daily rain of the PacNW winters and although it is not a warm jacket, it is perfect for a bike commute or hike. Did not have a chance to evaluate it in longer periods of constant rain (60+ minutes) but so far it has surpassed my expectations. Hood is pretty nice and you can make it snug, which is a plus imo if you bike as it does not affect visibility. The chest pocket is very handy for phone or quick access to small objects and the pockets have an extra velcro seal to keep the water out. High quality materials and build, it looks and feels good. Has been my go-to outer layer since the day I got it. Pretty close to perfection if you live in Seattle, lol. Not sure if an earlier year model had that problem (bought mine towards the end of the 2020 winter).
I bought the Minimalist Jacket in January and have had it 4 months and been on 4 overnight campouts, 2 dry and cold, and 2 rainy and cold. For dry conditions and wind it is great with layers. Light intermittent rain it is good, but this weekend it rained from 5am to 9pm with maybe 2hr rain free the whole day as a large storm moved through. The jacket wetted through and as others pointed out turned dark blue almost everywhere (the jacket is light blue). I had a DWR coated down mid-layer since it was 39F outside and I could tell from my mid-back between shoulder blades and down was wet. I am wondering if maybe one of the jacket seams is leaking on the back. Also, my down mid-layer hung down below the jacket since apparently, the jacket is shorter than I expected. ... MoreI bought the Minimalist Jacket in January and have had it 4 months and been on 4 overnight campouts, 2 dry and cold, and 2 rainy and cold. Luckily there is a drawstring to synch the bottom, but it is a hassle to remember to check if the mid-layer was hanging out.I bought this expensive jacket to protect both from wind and rain. I trusted in it was wet and chilly because of it. I thought being GoreTex it would be rock solid like my hunting gear. Now I am left looking for a new rain jacket and this one will not be Marmot. I had a backup plastic rain jacket I put over this about 6pm so the jacket could dry some since I was worried about the temperatures dropping more with my jacket wetting through. While I love my Marmot tent and it stayed dry during the same all night/day storm, the Marmot Minimalist jacket I trusted in failed to keep me dry. I'm just glad at this location I was able to have a shelter to get out of the rain at times because had I been non-stop in the rain I would have really been worse off.
I bought this a week ago and it's a great fit, although if you wear thick base layers you might want to upsize. I'm sized small and got great fit with sweaters, but feels tight with down jacket mid layers. The hood is not that roomy (just right, though i might be wrong to assume this is designed to go with helmets), havent tried it with helmet yet but I'm sure it wont fit. Upsize will be needed if you wear helmet. The material also looks good, not very noisy when moving, and slight feel that it is not that durable. I have Arc'teryx beta AR and it was really noisy when moving unlike this one with Paclite Gore tex.As for durability, it doesn't feel as rugged as Arc'teryx but will do the job on minimal activities.
