I'm mad about this amplifier. Turn it on, turn it up, and out comes amazing vintage Marshall tone. I prefer simplicity in amp design, and this is it. The tremolo is stunning.

Fantastic sound and feel. Not a bad sound to be had in this combo. I loved the tremolo and the overdrive sound is second to none. I wish it had a little more headroom; It starts to break up right away depending on your p/u's. It sounds fat and rich with strats and les pauls. The feel of the amp just makes you want to dig in and play. I wish it had a little more volume for gigs. I think you'll need the extention cab or have to mic it with a loud drummer. The volume is perfect for your house or apartment it gets loud but it sounds great even at low volumes which I guess is the point of the amp. It looks fantastic too. The only thing that kills me is the price. If you're a plexi or JTM 45 Marshall fan the run and buy this amp. if you're into fender clean (which is ... MoreFantastic sound and feel. Again, you have to play this amp like an instrument using your guitars controls and your pick attack to get different textures and drive levels. It gives back what you put into it with incredibly rich and muscial harmonic content. This is the best sounding amp for classic rock and blues that I've ever owned. The distortion kicks in with humbuckers at around 4 on the volume control and it just gets juicier from there. Channel 1 is voiced slightly darker than the tremolo channel, and with an A/B switch you can easily set up happening lead and rhythm sounds. The tremolo is amazingly quiet and has a great range, from subtle to insane. It's a very loud 18 watts with no master volume, so an attenuator is a must if you're going to play it at bedroom levels. I use a THD Hotplate (16 ohms) and it works great. To get the most out of this magnificient instrument, you need to work your volume and tone controls on your guitar. I set the volume at 7 and I can get excellent cleanish tones by backing off the volume control on my Les Paul or ES335. It works great with single coils as well, but the good stuff is up around the dusty end of the volume control. Got an SG? This amp will give you instant Angus! It's pure plexi goodness in a lightweight combo. Thank you Marshall for reissuing one of the best amps ever made.Outstanding attention to detail1Considering the cost of the originals, this seems like a pretty good deal.

I wanted this amp for a very long time. The idea of a hand wired Marshall made me very excited, and the 1974x seemed so awesome. When I went to try it, I was blown away by the amazing crunch tones it had. Sadly, this was a short lived test session, as the guys in the music store got pissed I had cranked it (hey, I got permission from one clerk, the others were just cranky). The clean tones are decent, with loads of Marshall character. The tremolo was a nice addition, however, the lack of reverb concerned me (I'm an ambiance whore). Now a quick thing about this amp: it is louder than a pack of 12 year olds (which if you've never experienced, is LOUD). Now a quick thing about this amp: it is louder than a pack of 12 year olds (which if you've never experienced, is LOUD). For 18 watts the cranked crunchy sounds are enough to blow someone's head off, and therefor not suitable for club gigs unless an overdrive of power attenuator are used. If you dig the classic Marshall crunch, and don't mind insane volume levels (or have a good attenuator), get this amp. You won't regret it.
This amp has the magic. It just has that 'something'. True Marshall overdrive, feel, and it even has that 'smell'. While I give it a '10' for quality, I have to tell you that the first one I got, out of the box, had a fairly large dent in the fron right side/corner, all this after Korg had supposedly inspected it. Got another one in and it is fine. Doesn't smell quite as much and isn't as loud, but still has the magic. If you want bottom end, you can try the 2061x and cx. I have both. There oranges and apples. Both have the magic, but the 1974x has the magic, as someone said, in spades.
I have owned two of these amps. The first one, years ago, was when I was pretty much playing my tele and not much else. I was underwhelmed. These days, my main guitar is a 59 Les Paul reissue and that has made all of the difference in the world with this amp. It absolutely sings when you attach a set of humbuckers - the dead on sound of classic rock of the early to mid seventies. If you have a ton of time on your hands, turn on the tremolo, set up a looping pedal and try not to stay up all night.... Enjoy! Oh, one more thing... Iplugged in the tele again and I'll stand by the humbucker statement. This amp requires a steady diet of humbuckers and solid chunks of mahogany.
The Marshall 1974x (and I'm guessing the original 1974 combo) must be one of the nicest amps ever created. It has useful tones just about anywhere on the dials - from beautiful thick clean tones that seem to bring out the best in any guitar plugged into it, to awesome crunchy gain tones that are completely responsive to pick attack, guitar volume, all shades of dynamics. I'm pretty picky when it comes to gear, and I find this amp flat out magical. I sat there last night with my 58 vos LP plugged into a diamond compressor, a little slapback delay, and into the Marshall turned up to maybe 4 or so on the volume, and it was highly inspirational. In truth, it's one of the few amps I've tried where I find it fun to jack straight in with no effects at all. Not cheap, but ... Not cheap, but I'd put it up against any boutique builder for quality of wiring, components, cabinet, etc. Much thanks, Mr Marshall.
Pretty cleans and ok dirty tones (which require maximum volume). The tone control easily makes the sound too muddy or too bright - really there is only one spot to run the amp for clean. For dirty the louder it is the more convincing. Ok dirty rhythm tones but always needing more. Nice tremolo sound. The multi inputs vary the amount of signal slightly. This would be a good amp at $700 - total rip-off at the price it costs. It has a good feel - the handwiring seems apparent in the touch response of this amp - but overall its a bit thin and brittle and weak. It does not live up to its price tag. I used a Custom Classic Strat which was an awesome guitar - best Strat I have ever played - but with this amp the sounds were limited and disappointing considering the price ... Forget about the fancy boutique amps. This handwired combo is a monster. Very expressive to the touch. The tremolo is stunning. All the power you will ever need. I feel this is the best amp Marshall is building today. Sounds great with my Paul, and screams with my strats, tele's and old esquire. Buy it, you will never regret the purchase. Pure Marshall sound !
I bought this amp used, over a year ago. Being a huge Clapton fan, especially of his work with John Mayall on the "Beano" album, I've been searching for that tone since the 60's. Finally found it with this amp paired with my Les Paul Standard. First of all, you need to know what to expect with this amp....Very, very early break up; very sensitive tone control ( that's a good thing!) and the tremolo is the most intense I've heard when you max it. I play in a classic rock band and need the entire spectrum of sound from Fender clean to overdrive for leads. There is no Fender clean with this amp at gig volumes...however, at the other end of the spectrum, if you use an LP, you will NOT need an overdrive or distortion pedal. this amp is made to turn up to 10 and control ... In order to surmount its inherent limiations, I use an A/B switch and alternate between the 1974X and a Fender Deluxe reverb or Marshall Haze (more headroom and great sound in its own right once I switched the stock speaker for an "aged" Scumback speaker). So while this amp is almost a one trick pony, it has amazing sound and will not disappoint you! If you are a blues or classic rock fan and you want a simple to use, beautifully made amp you can't go wrong with this one!

Marshall 1974X 18W 1x12 Guitar Combo
The Marshall 1974X is a handwired reissue of the classic, late '60s guitar amp. The original versions of this 18 watt amp (made from 1966-1968) are now extremely rare and highly sought after. The new, all-valve combo (3 x ECC83s* in preamp, 1 x EZ81 rectifier, 2 x EL84s in power amp) features two channels and a valve-driven Tremolo circuit (on Channel 2). Each channel offers two inputs plus volume and tone controls. Channel 2 also has Speed and Depth controls for the Tremolo. A contributing sonic factor in the original 1974 is the way the sound of the Celestion Greenback speaker softens with age. For the 1974X, Celestion revisited the recipe for the original 20 Watt, ceramic magnet, 15 Ohm, Greenback T1221 speaker, and 'aged' it. The result is a new speaker proprietary to Marshall that yields all of the sonic characteristics of the original.
