2 smokers, same issues

I've had 2 of these smokers of the last 2 years. First one the back was caved in, but I needed it in a pinch so ended up buying it. Came home and found the smoker off and my meat barely warm. The controller shorted out due to the smoker venting through the wiring hole. The door seals dont really seal on the corners, so there's always puddles at the base, never had anything make it to the grease tray.I attempted to use it a couple weeks ago and it wouldn't even turn on, kept tripping my outlet due to the controller. So I figured I'd give it another try, one that wasn't damaged at purchase. Only to find the SAME issues with this one. Luckily I checked and unscrewed the control before it shorted again.Would not recommend this smoker and I will most likely never buy ... MoreI've had 2 of these smokers of the last 2 years. The Pork was excellent the Chicken good. Again the only reason the chicken wasn’t excellent was the rub I chose. Using a smoker is a learning process. Don’t blame the smoker for user errors or user learning curve. I am very pleased and would buy again or recommend it to my best friends. A smoked turkey will be my next big smoke project.

Design flaw - wood "chips" do not burn completely before they stop smoking and only lasts about 1 hour. There's no way to dump more than about 1-2 loads of chips without overfilling tray. It must be emptied periodically, hot - use care. Design is really intended for essentially wood flakes flakes which are not available. General takes 15 min + 25 F change in setting to start smoking. Heating element should be closer to wood. (Agree smoke does not need to be heavy. After smoking 4-6 hours smoke will no longer penetrate so wrap in foil and stop adding chips.) Some temperature offset is expected. Doubt the people trying to smoke at very low temperatures will have a lot of luck getting it to smoke and hold temp. Understand seasoning the smoker but personally feel need to fairly heavily clean to avoid pests. Design Flaw - Salty water dripping off the meat or adding fruit juices corrodes the aluminum. Coating bottom tray, water reservoir, shield over smoking area with foil helps reduce the mess. Pop riveted aluminum sides don't fit as well as desired.Feedback on Customer Service CommentsStop wasting the readers time thanking positive feedback.Stop wasting the readers time saying sorry it doesn't meet expectations.Go address quality issues. There are repeated comments on shorts, moisture int he contrroler, burned out elements, excessive temperature swings. Those aren't replacement part issues. They fundamental flaws in design or fabrication.Only smoking for about an hour and really expecting wood flakes is a design flaw.

First time in my life I've ever entered a review, I was very excited to get this smoker unit and having read numerous reviews decided to order the accessory smoker box before even using the DES the first time. The reason was reviews that said if you fed chips into the small standard tray, you would spend a lot of time feeding the pan along with a problem of the heating element shutting down when the smoker reaches temp thereby reducing the amount of smoke produced. Believe what people say about the stability of the acc box with the single hook bolt that comes with it. Don't know for sure but, much of that problem would go away if they simply gave you two bolts with the purchase. It comes with 4 - 1 1/2" long stabilizer bolts that thread into the bottom of the box ... MoreFirst time in my life I've ever entered a review, I was very excited to get this smoker unit and having read numerous reviews decided to order the accessory smoker box before even using the DES the first time. It comes with 4 - 1 1/2" long stabilizer bolts that thread into the bottom of the box which do you absolutely no good if the DES is mounted on the legs that it's shipped with, they put the bottom of the acc box about 8" off the ground. I fabricated a plate that solved the problem but, I'm not sure what the engineering group was thinking when they reviewed that design...A simple on/off switch controls the acc smoke box and, it puts out a lot of smoke you might get a little over two hours of smoke per fill with dry chips. Now to the DES. with the acc box we were able to get some very flavorful meat from our efforts, one of my major complaints is that this unit is very slow to get back up to temp after opening the door for treatment of the product. The first time I used it on a pair of pork shoulder roasts, it's winter in IL so I left it in the shop with the walk-in door open and a box fan set up to blow over the top to force the smoke outside. The temp in the shop was about 40 degrees and it took us between 9-10 hours to get them to 165 degrees internal temp with the smoker set at 225 degrees. Don't misunderstand, they were tasty but, my goodness, that's just way more time commitment than I'm prepared to make. The second time I went to use it I plugged it in, and nothing would light up. I registered the product so I could file a warranty claim and, as I went through the troubleshooting process, one of the steps was to look under the unit for possible damage to the circuit board cover. It said nothing about removing the cover and checking connections inside which turned out to be the problem, none of the wires were off their spade posts but, something was going on because after removing and pushing them back on the unit powered up.That allowed our second smoking adventure to begin two full chickens and two slabs of St Louis ribs. We decided to do the chickens beer can style, no cans, just a couple of can stands to keep the birds standing upright to insure smoke infusion. As it turns out, two birds standing is about all the room there is in the smoker. I was going to remove the top rack but, alas the standard size grocery store birds would not fit. We started in mid-morning with the birds and didn't get done with the ribs until 2:00 AM. This was all done with the DES sitting outside on the deck most of the day with a doubled-up blanket draped over it to help it conserve heat. Loved the chicken and the ribs were outstanding but, once again what a time commitment. When I made up my mind to return it to the vendor, I decided to clean it a bit, took the drip pan out and cleaned it, it had chunks of grease cooked to ash on it, there were burned/cooked dry ash grease dops on the shield over the heating element, and there is also a small trough on the back wall that is supposed to direct grease to the drain hole that runs right over the top of the heating element that was filling with cooked dry grease ash. Did not have to clean the grease drip cup outside the drain as there never was a drip that came out of it. Honestly, most of the grease ends up in the water pan which needs cleaning after each use.Very high hopes with a huge let down. Find it so frustrating to not be able to actually speak to someone when something doesn't work and the fact that I waited from Sunday to Tuesday for response from CS and then it was without any direct response to my question.

This is because the gaskets are all crumpled in the corners because they're not supposed to be bent at 90 degree angles sideways.Thermostat/Display:The built-in display is almost unreadable unless you put your hand over it to block the light. The thermostat is off by more than 12 degrees making it basically useless and it can barely hold a consistent temperature swinging at times by 20 degrees on a calm 55 degree fall day with no wind. I actually had less variability in temperature with my propane smoker and more smoke. Finally, on a cold day even with the vents closed down, it can't keep the temperature warm enough. You'll need to buy an insulation blanket to keep this thing consistent (I would recommend just getting another smoker).Capacity:You can't really use this thing to full capacity because if you put food on each rack, the food on top will not fully cook. I'm not talking about crowding the racks, but just putting a food on each rack is too much for this thing. Conclusion:This smoker looks great, but sadly it just isn't a good smoker. Masterbuilt used to mean quality, but it seems that they no longer take that seriously. If they did, the would read the first five reviews on EVERY website complaining about the same issues and fix them. This would save them time and money on support calls and create a better experience for the buyers, but that doesn't seem to be their concern.Masterbuilt execs, if you ever read this and want to build a good product you have to use it yourself at more than just your houses in Georgia where the temps are mild. Go north where it's cooler and see how it works in other parts of the country and adjust your process to make a consistent product. Then maybe you can start to bring back some of that brand loyalty that you're losing to your competitors. Don't be another American company that dies because it doesn't listen to it's customers. The phrase Master-Built is a big claim and puts a lot of burden on you to make quality products. If you can't live up to the name, then change the name or change what you're doing to earn the name.

I literally cuffed my hands, put a towel over to block the sun, but the light got through every time and made it extremely difficult to read the display. I recommend placing this smoker outside over an overhead covering like a well vented carport etc. Also I expected there to be a mess when cooking, but all the drippings makes for a mess in the smoker, my recommendation, which I didn't read in the instructions is the wrap all trays, even the water pan, in heavy duty aluminum foil, you won't be disappointed! Cleanup will be much simpler! I also feel ALL these types of smokers should come with a stand! Unless you're short and don't mind bending over, it will get very aggravating to bend over on this short smoker. I do recommend purchasing the stand and cover! You will find value in it especially this quality smoker! If it weren't for the hard to read display and short stature of this smoker, it would get a 5 star rating! Maybe the future ones will have these features. This thing was worth every penny and my family wants me to cook every other week! You don’t know, but that made me feel great and I walked away with my head up knowing I can smoke!

I would have given this smoker a 5 if the temperature control was more accurate. It is aesy to assemble and works well. However, as many reviewers noted, the digital temperature readout is not accurate. Mine is reading low (to a separate temperature sensor calibrated in boiling water) by 35-40 degrees F. While this would not normally be an issue, the controls on the smoker only allow a max temperature of 275 degrees F. That means the most I can get out of it is 240 degrees. I generally smoke at 250 or less, so it will work.i sent a warranty note to Maaterbuilt, but they were of no help. First, they said they needed to know if it was plugged into an extension cord. I said no, but it should not matter as the element cycled on and off when the smoker reached the temperature set on the controls. When I explained that the temperature was 35 degrees low against a calibrated temperature probe, their response was that the temperature probe I placed in the middle of the box could be innacurate even though I told them I had calibrated it. They said there was nothing more they could do.

Total waste of money and a source of frustration

I bought this smoker two summers ago; this would be starting my third. Used it about a half dozen times before I moved it to the garage for winter storage. Took it out for summer #2 and it would immediately pop the GFCI; couldn't use it at all. Contacted support and they said it was the cabinet. They sent me a new cabinet. Worked twice last summer then put it away for winter again. This spring, i used it once and it was popping the GFCI every hour or two. Contacted support and they said it was the heating element. Had to replace that at my expense. Ran it once to test it out and it seemed to work, Stayed on and at temp for 5hrs. That was a week ago. Went out today and it keeps immediately popping the GFCI. for the record, I've tested it on three different GFCI ... MoreI bought this smoker two summers ago; this would be starting my third. Went out today and it keeps immediately popping the GFCI. for the record, I've tested it on three different GFCI outlets all on different circuits in my house. Additionally, I use my electric welder on these 3 GFCI with no issue. No extension cords and no other appliances used. This experience has been supremely frustrating and dejecting as i researched heavily and thought I was getting a good product. I have zero desire to move forward with this smoker and fully plan on going "Office Space" on it.

Very Good Smoker.

I needed an upgrade from my propane smoker, as I wanted consistent heat, which a thermostat controlled smoker could provide, while still using wood chips. I don’t like the idea of using pressed pucks or pellets.I did my research and found this one to fit my wants in a smoker. Well I was not disappointed.1. The design of this smoker produces an incredible chimney effect, and smoke completely encapsulates the food being smoked.2. The heat is consistant. (Very important)3. It took 15 minutes to get to 225 deg C and 30 minutes to 225 deg produce good smoke.4. Clean up is very easy, as there is lots of flat and rounded surfaces inside this smoker, also the racks are stainless steel. I used a bucket, brillo pad and a cloth, I use to clean my smokers. I have a small smoker and was trying to upgrade to a larger, better one. The store did not have a display model so I bought this based on the box.First, This is not a smoker. It is a slow cooker with a very small smoker tray. My other small smoker holds 2-3 times the chips that this one holds which I replace about every hour through a small door. This one you can add chips but you have to open the main door to remove the used ones. The wood chip tray only covers 1/4 of the heating element. The heater will turn off when it reaches temperature and therefore stops smoking. They suggest adding charcoal bits to the wood chips you add. I know why but WTH. and that is not the taste I am looking for. They also suggest to keep the temperature up higher to keep the element ... MoreI have a small smoker and was trying to upgrade to a larger, better one. Therefore IMHO it is not a smoker. It was assembled shoddy with dents and things not aligning, every shelf is bent and they are way to light weight to hold a heavy piece of meat. The display is very cheap and needed some adjustment to fit right. It is not weather or spill resistant at all, any water on top of the unit will enter the insulation area via the display cable and mounting holesThe assembly instructions pictures in the manual are incorrect. There is a 1-800 number in the manual they urge you to call if you have any questions however it says please visit our web site and then hangs up on you :( You have to fill out an online form to contact them :(It kinds paints a good picture of the company.I can not recommend this as a good smoker,
