Maze Hungry Bin Worm Farm

$429.00

(131 reviews)

The hungry bin is a continuous flow system. When operated correctly, continuous flow systems are far more efficient than worm farms that use stacked trays. The unique shape of the bin creates a large surface area allowing all the worms living in the hungry bin to easily access the food scraps at the top – exploiting the fact they’re surface feeders, and increasing their processing capacity. The tapered sides also encourage the worms to stay on the surface, while compressing their castings below. Once the compost process is complete, the hungry bin is designed to allow the simple and easy harvest of both finished castings and liquid fertiliser. Harvesting castings does not involve any heavy, messy lifting. The floor of the bin is easily removed, allowing approximately 4 litres (3/4 gallons) of castings to break away at the bottom of the taper. This allows the easy removal of finished castings from the bin. Removing the castings is a relatively clean process. Finished castings are largely free of worms. The lid is at a comfortable operating height, and convenient to open and close. Tight fitting, it prevents pests from entering but has sufficient venting to create healthy airflow. The hungry bin even has wheels, making moving the bin light work.

I love this unit. It solved most of the problems. I previously had the Worm factory and the wormy ranch i had first. Fast forward 20 years, and I am older and less able to lift the trays of compost off each other to get to the good stuff. This solves that problem. I like the fact that you can wheel it around if you need to which makes it easier to clean around it. The others I had were immovable unless you completely dismantled and unloaded them. I also like the tray that the worm tea drains into. The other composters I had used a spigot in the bottom to drain the tea, and they plugged all the time, to a point where I finally removed them. They caused an anaerobic environment that was not healthy for the worms. This tray has nice sharp corners and you can easily pour the tea from the corners into a watering can. Plus, since I have my worm composters outside in a shaded composting kind of patio type area that I built from plastic pallets, I sometimes had rodents chew into the old ones that they were able to get into because the lid just sat on them and they could crawl under it. The lid on this closes securely. This one sets up on a nice strong metal framework with a garbage cart type hinged closing top. The only problem I am having, which BTW was worse with my other worm composters, is the fruit flies that are laying eggs around inside. I plan to solve that issue by dusting the inside with diatomaceous earth, which will impale the larvae and the flies and hopefully solve most of the problem. This does not harm the worms. I am looking forward to harvesting my first worm compost by just detaching a single tray from the bottom. It will be so much easier.

I have had my Hungry Bin since the end of Covid lockdowns, when non-essential online orders could be delivered. I'd been using a triple layered wormfarm for over 9years in my large organic vegetable garden on my lifestyle block. I gifted this to a neighbor when I moved south to the Kapiti Coast. I read all the information provided by the manufacturer of Hungry Bin & all online revues, plus noted that there was a picture of a female moving the Hungry Bin. I am a fit retired person and started to set up the bin immediately it was delivered. I was taken aback, after filling the bin as required then standing it upright, that the forward weight lifted me off my feet completely! I live alone and had to get help to place it in its permanent location out of the sun in a hedge line. I'm afraid this product is not suitable for anyone who is not tall and under 60Kgs. I am extremely disappointed it does not meet my needs.

Doesn’t work as stated
7 June 2022

Been using the product now for a few months and was happy until now. Ive removed castings from base of unit twice now (once a month) and when opening the base today to harvest more castings they simply are not moving to the base of the bin as stated they will. It appears the castings are just compressing halfway down and not moving through. My worm population is brilliant so the amount of food and shredded materiel being added is obviously correct. I can’t add anymore food now as the mass won’t move down to the bottom. I’m seeing a design fault in that I believe the bin should actually taper out to the bottom, not in. I now have to pitch fork the bin to force material down to the bottom and to open up and aerate the contents of the bin. Bought my "Hungary Worm Farm" from your company last year, was delighted so easy to put together. But Tar Ra !!!! opened lower compartment for the first time today ,thinking it might be a bit of a heavy job, ( 73yr F) No way... so easy, very manageable.....and the most amazing worm castings for the garden ! Fantastic product, and unlike my previous Worm Farm, the worms stay up top doing their job.Ever so highly recommend this farm !

Go big or go home as the saying goes. This worm farm is easy to assemble and to move about. No obnoxious odours and it's whisper quiet too. The product from this will go straight back into the ground to feed the plants in the garden. Should have done this years ago.

Nice and concise instructions for assembly and usage. Good guidance on how to fill the bin and where to store it. Collection was fast and easy in-store. My partner was excited with the final product. We've already got soil/food/worms inside it.

So Far, Not Overjoyed

I saw the Hungry Bin while I was looking up questions about my Can O' Worms bin. At first, I thought it would be superior to the Can O' Worms. When I did the weekly watering on the Can O' Worms, water would sometimes drip out from a couple of the legs. When I first put the bin together it looked very clean and professional, so much so that I had it in a kitchen corner and no one suspected what it was. Now that two months have passed, however, I am having a lot of problems. Gnats are flying all over the kitchen and gathering in the sliding door track by the hundreds. Since Day One, the worms are mostly up along the sides, or on the bottom of the lid. Many have jumped out and dried up.And I only have 750 worms in there! God help me if I had 12,000, as they recommend.Unlike the Can O' Worms, which has 3 layers and the middle is the worms' bedding area, the Hungry Bin is just a huge plastic container with no distinction between bedding and feeding area. The Can O' Worms has a spigot to drain the "worm tea." The Hungry Bin just has a drip tray that sits on the floor and collects the liquid dripping out, and it's difficult trying to pour the tea out from that tray into a watering can. (Meanwhile, the liquid just drips onto the floor.)My son complains about the Hungry Bin non-stop and keeps demanding I get rid of it...which would put me out $400+. I wish I had known this was going to be such a messy nuisance before I spent all that money.

Well constructed and easy to set up
29 July 2022

I balked a little at the price but I know the value of what worms produce and this system did seem to be the best design of all the worm farms I looked at. It is well constructed and only took a few minutes to set up. I had read the online instructions in advance which helped. I've had it a few weeks at the time of writing this and the worms are chomping through the food I add every few days so now I've just got to wait a few months for them to poop it out of the bottom!

hands down the best and easiest.

Over the decades we have tried innumerable methods of composting, both worm-free and red wiggler feeders. In my 7th decade, (and in physical decline) I find this still the easiest to maintain, to access and to clean. As for the results, new earth black as soot and loamy, much needed for our glacial moraine 'potter's clay' *ahem* soil.
