A good hiking shoe, but with a short life-span

My leather hiking boots are over 20 years old and have been resoled 3 times. They are the most comfortable boots I've ever owned. Well worth the money if you expect to be hiking on rough ground, over talus blocks or down scree slopes. Still, I must admit, the Moabs are nearly perfect for smooth, dry trails in the summertime.

Good shoe - needs older insole & some softening

The older insole is much more sturdy and spongey in the same area. You can purchase the same kinetic fit insoles as the Moab 2's for extra, but only in whole sizes :(-> The midsole is stiffer than the Moab 2, and this contributes to the pressure at the heel and the forefoot. Both of these means the forefoot experiences a ton more pressure and feels much stiffer and less comfortable after walking out of the store. It's more uncomfortable to stand for hours or walk for miles, and it feels like I'm closer to injury at any given point than with the Moab 2.

How Moab 3’s solved my toe box problem!

I was actually concerned when unboxing that these would be too stiff and heavy to be effective. The shoe holds you in the heel cup and transfers well through steps. Going downhill you are secure and left with your toes free from the usual smashing that happens in most shoes with a weak mid upper and narrow toe. The vibram souls are great on wet asphalt, mossy rocks, damp logs, ice, and turf. MIxed emotions over my new Merrell Moab 3 hikers

I have completed one 6 km walk wearing my new lo-top Merrell Moab 3 shoes. The Pros:These shoes have excellent grip with their coarse-lug Vibram soles. The size is a good match for my 10½W foot size, so ordering online worked out. The shoes are slightly wider and longer than my `regular’ 10½W shoes, but this works well given the thicker socks that I tend to wear while hiking. The Cons:The outsole and midsole are sufficiently thin that I can feel the individual lugs of the Vibram sole pressing against the sole of my foot. I would not have imagined that this was possible. These are early days, but for the moment, this sensation is quite distracting while walking. I expected blisters or corns and calluses to develop, but they have not appeared so far.The sides of ... MoreI have completed one 6 km walk wearing my new lo-top Merrell Moab 3 shoes. The Pros:These shoes have excellent grip with their coarse-lug Vibram soles. The size is a good match for my 10½W foot size, so ordering online worked out. This is not a problem while walking on level ground or pavement, but it could be painful or even dangerous if attempting to hike on even slightly uneven ground / trails.

Moab 3

I decided to get back into hiking, now that I'm older. After shopping many brands, I decided wo go with Merrill and chose this model. They are well made and stable and I love them, although they are a bit heavier and more "substantial" than I expected. Sizing was right on (My size is 13 N normally, and these 13 N fit just fine). They were comfortable right from the start. I mostly hike on trails in woods, with some roots and rocks; a lighter weight shoe would have suited me just fine. I did end up buying another pair or Merrill hiking shoes (Alverstone 2) which now I am using more often. They are lighter waterproof and lighter weight and will end up being my day-today hiking shoes, with the Moab 3 pair for rougher terrain. I am happy I have both pairs. Moabs Really are Great For Summer!
13 May 2024

The Moab Vented Hikers comfortable to wear for all the seasons but winter. In the past, I have bought various shoes trying to find shoes that didn’t feel like heater packs & allow my feet to breathe. The Moab Vented Hikers are the best shoes that I have found to wear in hot weather. They offer good support while being lightweight. Mine have held up reasonably well with everyday use. These will make my third pair. I am still wearing my first pair that are looking worn, while keeping a second pair for better occasions. I didn’t need this third pair yet but was afraid that they would quit making them. You know how it is when you find something that you like. My only negative is the shoe laces will wear out before the shoes!

My go-to shoes
19 January 2024

This is my fourth pair of Moabs in 20 years. They have become my go-to shoes for walking around town and casual hikes. My ankles are strong so I have no worries taking these shoes to rougher areas like scrambling around rocks in the US Southwest. The Moabs are breathable and the GoreTex provides waterproofness that I never try testing due to the short height.Prior to wearing Moabs, I had a similar pair that did not come with Vibram soles. The proprietary Merrell soles would wear out before the rest of the shoes. With Vibram soles, the shoes start to fall apart from wear and tear while the soles look almost brand new.My Moabs are in gray/beige with small hints of orange. I hope they never discontinue these colours.

NONE BETTER
15 July 2024

Bought these as a light-colored (Walnut), lighter weight alternative to the Merrell mid-height shoes I wear during winter months. These are much more suited to summer since Merrell doesn’t make their “water shoes” in wide. And I can’t wear anything that’s not wide. My feet simply won’t allow it.Fortunately, my favorite MOAB 3s come in a whole host of varieties. One to suit every season, place, and mood, it seems. And they ALWAYS fit me like a glove. My feet just love them. Each time I foolishly am tempted to try another brand, I’m sorry. Immediately. And they wear out seemingly immediately. The damage to my feet considerable. So, at my age (70), I’m buying nothing but Merrell MOAB 3s because there are literally NONE BETTER. Not for me. Not for my feet. Once great shoe has been cheapened and no longer the same
6 March 2024

I've purchased probably 20 pair of Merrell Moab over the last 15 years. The last several are so clearly inferior in materials and construction quality, I'm now forced to find a replacement brand. The insoles seem to come unbonded from the bottom sole and squeak within a week or two. The stitching of the toe cap on this pair are coming out and frayed all over. This is a pair I used only for daily wear, not hiking. Older hiking pairs are in better shape than this. This is Moab 3. I then tried ordering the prior Moab 2 thinking maybe it was better, and can't believe I can literally feel the bottom sole tread pattern through the shoe to my foot. They are both so cheaply constructed now. Terrible quality issues with this once great shoe
18 February 2024

I have worn Merrell shoes for over 15 years now and specifically the Moab low cut hiking shoe as my everyday out in the elements since they have been available. Unfortunately this will be my last pair as the quality is terrible. The last three pairs of Moab 3 waterproof have had nothing but issues on the front of the shoe and inside the heal. Within a few months of wear the rubber sole will peel back from the tip of the shoe or the front surround will become detached. My latest pair bought in November of 2023 have the stitching at the front surround already fraying and I expect the surround will soon start to come detached. My last two pairs have had the same issue where the heal of the interior liner gets loose creating an irritating feel when worn.
