For years I hiked in trail running shoes, but a few years ago I decided to purchase dedicated, low cut hikers for those easy hikes where boots are overkill. These are my second pair of hikers and I really like the firm, stability they provide. They don't get hot like my Salomon GTX hikers did. They have excellent traction on loose surfaces and run true to size if not a bit wider. Pair these with a pair of Darn Tough Light Hikers and you'll be good for a full day on the trail. Aside from being on the firm side and not as light as a pair of trail running shoes, these also pick up small rocks easily, so off they come before walking into the house. They breathe well and the laces stay tied so what more can you ask for. I purchased the Moab 3 because I already have a pair and they are fine. I needed a second pair so I purchased them and tried them on and they seemed to be good. Until I went on vacation and went on a hike. After two painful hikes where my foot slid around in the boot despite trying to tighten them as much as I could, I contacted Merrell. I explained the situation and they said I needed to fill out a form which I did and submitted it. It's been two months and I haven't heard a word from them. I want to know if the boots are manufactured somewhere different than they were when I purchased my first pair because they are basically a different boot. My foot hasn't changed in size but the fit of the new boot is so completely different. I tried these on in the store first and they felt fine. I purchased them online and have very regrettably found out that these shoes are poorly designed. The insoles are worthless. They provide zero cushioning and the absolute minimum of support. I endured pain (that I've never felt before in my life) in three different points on my foot. I attempted my favorite Oboz insoles which removed two of the pain points, but the bottom of the heel pain remained and the heel slippage that already existed got worse (which is just a blister in the making). So then I tried my other favorite Superfeet insoles (the berry colored ones) because the cup of their heels are more form fitting. It helped decrease the heel slippage but the heel pain increased tremendously, and I was left ... MoreI tried these on in the store first and they felt fine. When I tried these on in the store they felt fine, but after my first three miles I realized what a mistake I had made. I should have just returned them then.Merrell: make a narrower heel and/or provide a heel lock as well as more cushioning/support. The somewhat roomy toebox in the "wide" version is nice, but these are a fail overall.

Was happy to see a new edition of Moab 3. I have a Moab 2 Gore-Tex that I really like and wanted a cooler shoe for summer. Ordered these in brindle/tea and am pleased to say that the color is a bit darker than what it seems on the website. The mesh is a sort of greenish and the leather is smooth and taupe. The midsole is not quite as soft and responsive as I thought it might be, but is still really comfortable. Put them on and went on a 3 mile walk with zero discomfort. I have a rather narrow foot and the Moab does a really nice job of securing one’s heel while providing a sufficiently wide toe box. I tried another brand recently that just found offered women’s size 12 about which reviews raved. Must say that I was disappointed. I've been wearing the Merrill Moab for so many years I can't recall. Possibly a couple of decades. I'd go through a pair every 6 months and would know when to replace them when my knee and hip bursitis would begin to act up. The former Moabs were the only thing that enabled me to walk the 5 miles a day I do religiously. But these new Moabs are the worst shoe for walking / hiking I've ever worn. They boast using recycled materials... perhaps that's why they offer such horrible all-round support? After only 2 months of wearing them, with my orthotic inserts I use, so I kept all variables consistent, my hip and knee bursitis is back with a vengeance. After 2 months I can no longer wear these. A complete waste of money. I just bought a pair of Keens from REI and will be ... MoreI've been wearing the Merrill Moab for so many years I can't recall. Possibly a couple of decades. The great people at REI Reno helped me with new hiking shoes. I've been in Keens for a long time but oddly it turns out my feet have grown even though I'm of an ancient age. Go figure. Maybe I will surprise myself and grow some hair, but for now I needed to get into a larger shoe. The Keens in stock weren't doing it for me... either too small or too large. I went with a pair of Salomon Ultra 4 with quick lace. After two short hikes (*each under five miles*), the quick lace wouldn't stay put. Even though it's quick, the lace part of the name should be the operative word but not for this pair. The reviews weren't that great so I brought them back to REI (after a good cleaning of course) to see what else they might have in the magic closet for me.The sales person was ... MoreThe great people at REI Reno helped me with new hiking shoes. The reviews weren't that great so I brought them back to REI (after a good cleaning of course) to see what else they might have in the magic closet for me.The sales person was very knowledgable and he suggested I try Merrells. Instant frown face. Why you ask? Well I bought a pair about 15 years ago and they fell apart after a few months. But... it was an inexpensive pair... from a big box store... and the sales person didn't know much... So I try them on and jezzalou they are comfortable!Walking around the REI store is always a fun experience when you are trying on shoes. you walk up and down every aisle. Then walk up and down the rock. Stop and look in the mirror. Rinse and repeat. They felt good after 15 minutes so I took the plunge. The shoes have really performed great! Merrell has redeemed themselves lol. I live in northern Nevada and hike a lot around the Mt. Rose Wilderness area and also around the Lake Tahoe basin. Trails here are a mix of dirt, rock and scree along with fairly steep inclines. My first hike (no break in period for me!) was a 11 mile jaunt up Mt. Rose. 2100' vertical and most of that is in the last 2 miles. My feet felt great! No foot pain! No arch pain! And the best part was that the dang tongue stayed in the middle! Thank heaven for the simple pleasures. My bar for happiness can be pretty low at times, but I do think these are great shoes.Winter will be here soon but I have a lot of hikes planned before the white stuff falls. Fingers crossed the shoes continue to perform well beyond the maiden voyage!
I've been gearing up with this shoe for decades and I have noticed that over the past several years they have lost their once high level of quality.I purchased two pairs about 10 months ago, the waterproof moab and the Gortex moab. The first thing you will notice is that they do not have the comfort they used to have. The bottoms are so thin that you feel everything you walk on, whether gravel, roots, rocks, whatever. The first thing you should do is remove the insoles and throw them directly in the trash. Even with new Spenco inserts they still don't have enough meat to soften the feel.I'm a lifelong hiker and as mentioned, have used the Merrell products for ever.I think I have purchased my last pair. Quality has literally tanked over the past several years and I can't see spending the money on a product that they have decided to take shortcut after shortcut to reduce the cost of manufacturing in order to maintain profit. Why not at least provide reasonably decent inserts. The sides of the shoes blow out more frequently than in the past as well.It is typical of manufactures these days to slowly, piece by piece lower their quality, maintain price and too bad for the consumer.Time to move on.
I am new to Morrell and have tried many models and sizes. The sizing is not consistent anda each pair needs to be checked for fit. I got these in 6.5 and the Mids in 7. Both fit with these being bigger overall even though they are the smaller size. They are comfortable except for the tongue pushing on top of my foot. There is a thick flap where the tongue is attached. I tried lacing different ways to flatten it but it's bulky. The Mids do this too but not as much. I am not using them outside yet so I can return if needed but this makes it hard to decide how they will feel on a long walk.Carpetong doesn't give the same results as outside. I want them for daily walks through paved sidewalks or groomed trails. Not sure if this brand is for me. I would like a more ... MoreI am new to Morrell and have tried many models and sizes. If I return these I have to pay for the shipping. If I exchange then I can't exchange again so if that pair has the same issue I'm stuck. I have purchased 2 models of winter boots and had similar sizing concerns and the tongue issue as well. The tongue design and inconsistent sizing needs to be fixed.
I was so excited to be selected by REI to try out and review the Merrell Moab 3 Women's hiking shoes that I immediately tried them on upon arrival. They did not disappoint and seemed very comfortable straight out of the box. They appear to be made of high-quality materials and the gray-blue color, Altitude, is really lovely too!I was pleased to see that the Moab 3 has good arch support as well as a nicely cushioned foot bed. I generally wear size 7.5 - 8 and have found some shoes are too narrow for my feet. I was very pleased that these appear to run a little wider and allowed ample room in the toe box. I tested a size 8, which appears to run true to size.I walked 6 miles in them on my first hike, without a breaking in period, and found them to be very comfortable. Honestly, I was surprised by how good my feet felt throughout the hike, without rubbing, irritation, or blisters. The Vibram outsoles provided a nice grip too, even on wet rocks and slick boardwalks. I also found them to be not overly warm, as some shoes can be in 95+ degree humid Georgia weather. The Merrell Moab 3 hiking shoes have continued to impress me on each additional hike. The only negative thing that I can say about this shoe, is that the arch support appears to start slightly further back towards the heel then most shoes I have worn. It was not uncomfortable to wear and I didn't notice it while hiking, just when testing them out in my kitchen. Often times I will replace the insoles in my shoes for one with better arch support, but I do not feel the need to do that with this shoe.I am pleased to have had the opportunity to try out the Merrell Moab 3 hiking shoe and would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking for a well-made, stylish, and comfortable hiking option.
I've been mourning my older Merrells that are worn out and not made the same anymore. I almost cried when I packed up these Moab 3s for return. My feet tried so hard to love them like I used to. But the squarish heel did not feel good under my heels and the horribly hard insert is unbearable. Merrell used to put Ortholite inserts in these styles, and I still have an 11 yr old one in my bike shoes, which still feels good. Also, the exaggerated arch doesn't feel natural at all and hits too far back now. The biggest flaw Merrell has is not making these with the Q Form, as in the old days. Only things still good about the Moab is outsole grip, mesh for hotter months and offering the Wide width. But walking comfort is gone for me, can't even tell there are air cells in ... MoreI've been mourning my older Merrells that are worn out and not made the same anymore.
