Direct sow peas outdoors from March to June, once the soil has warmed. In mild areas, some hardy, early maturing cultivars may be sown in late autumn for overwintering. Sow pea seed 4cm (1.5in) deep and 5cm (2in apart, in rows 75cm (30in) apart. Support pea plants with twiggy sticks, wire or netting as they grow, and use fine netting to protect pea crops from birds and pea moth damage. Water regularly. Harvest peas around 14 weeks after sowing, when the pods have swollen. For a heavier harvest, pick regularly.
