Firstly I expected it to be quieter. Whilst writing data you click hear it making the soft clicking and whining noises. The other negative that my Windows PC does not like booting up with the hard drive plugged in. It takes forever - but as soon as I reluctantly unplug it, my desktop appears? Maybe it's another issue or I'm not doing something within the star-up bios. Another negative is that If I havn't used the drive for say 20mins or more, it seems to go to sleep and I have to wait a minute nearly for it to waken. Anyone have any solutions or ideas to my problems? Don't usually have this problem with other drives. I realise SSD's are quicker and process no noise, but this was cheaper and had a bigger storage capacity. So all-in-all - not that impresses!!

Ive had several WD hard drives over the years. Im one of the lucky ones that has never had a failure until just the other day.My WD My Book Duo 8TB drive is set up with RAID 1 Mirrored. I use it almost daily as my main photo storage device for Lightroom. The other day a notice popped up on my monitor stating that the RAID 1 was failing...run WD Drive Utility. The normal white flashing light on the front panel of the enclose turned to a yellow/amber color.WD Drive Utility said Drive 1 failed. Replace this drive immediately.WD is sending out a refurbished replacement with whats called an Advanced RMA. They send me the refurb, I send them the bad 5 month old My Book Duo back, and then they dont charge me for the replacement once they receive the defective RAID ... Several issues with this drive array, which I currently have set to RAID 1 (mirrored). Once or twice a week, completely out of the blue, drive bay #2 shows up as empty. Right in the middle of work, not necessarily during reading or writing to disk. When this happens, the RAID degrades, the computer must be shut down, and the 20-30 hour RAID rebuild process begins. I reckon Ive done this 30-40 times in the relatively limited time Ive owned this product.Similarly to the above complaint, *ANY TIME* the drive is ejected (properly), the error with drive bay #2 occurs again, e.g. shows up empty. Once again, the only solution is to shut the computer down, restart, and rebuild the RAID.Two stars for WDs willingness to send me a replacement drive, which sadly exhibited ... Interleaved is where bits of info are stored on both drives, and is mainly used by people who want to store movies and watch them streaming. Why Western Digital chose to default to RAID-0, I don't know. Here's what you do to get around the limitations and vagueness of the soft)ware and accompanying user's manual. 1) Set your drive up as RAID-1 in the Western Digital Utilities software that does come with it, and seems fine and straightforward. You'll find that under RAID management in the Western Digital Utilities. You will see just one drive registering in My Computer, but since there are 2 drives inside the box, and they are both supposed to be mirrored (once you configure for RAID-1) the unit IS ACTUALLY SAVING TWO COPIES. This is confusing. If you're worried, you can check the health of the 2nd drive with the Utilities software. You can also choose to set it up as JBOS (which, believe it or not, stands for Just A Bunch Of Drives) so that you can see both drives in My Computer in Windows, and not just one drive like you can with RAID-1. The problem with JBOS, is, even though it's more reassuring to see two drives, the synch software you can purchase separately or download for free has to be sophisticated enough to copy to 2 drives at once. If you leave it set up as RAID-1, then your synch software can be cheap and easy to use and just do straight synch from one drive to another, and the RAID-1 is hopefully doing its thing and really saving to two drives, not just the one you can see. 2) Download FreeFile Synch (Be sure to read warnings and instructions about how to download this without getting malware) or buy SecondCopy for $35. This will get around the problem of the horrible software that comes with this RAID drive. 3) You can now schedule the synch to happen every few minutes, or whatever interval you feel comfortable with to give you peace of mind. Just be sure to schedule the interval at a long enough time period that a whole camera CF flash card could actually download before the synch program took effect. (For instance, I have mine set to every 20 minutes since my CF cards take about 15 minutes to download.)

I can think of no reason for WD employing hardware encryption other than to force you to buy the replacement drives from them for as long as they chose to sell them. This characteristic of the drive should be made clear in the WD literature so that people can make an informed I bought the older model of this WD Duo to run in a RAID 1 configuration. I used it to have a protected working/storage solution for my photography and fortunately backed it up with offsite storage. My thinking, based on the WD literature, was that if one of the drivers failed all I had to do was replace the bad drive and rebuild the RAID or I could even pull the good drive and put it in another enclosure. As it turned out, none of this was possible.decision in purchasing it.
The main circuit board failed along with one of the two drives. Had it set to RAID 1 (Mirrored). WD tech support said nothing can be done except to buy a new enclosure and put the other working mirrored pair into the new enclosure. Since I purchased two of these units I was able to salvage the data from the working drive but will never buy again because of possibility of enclosure circuit board failure.

Unlike other drives, if the enclosure fails, you will lose access to both drives. This is because the enclosure encrypts your files to be unreadable by any other enclosure. If you're out of the 12 months warranty, the only solution is to purchase another WD My Book Duo enclosure (the exact same model) and place your old drives in it. Unfortunately, this means you end up with another WD product that is at risk of failing.
