A really slow drive compared to my 16TB WD Elements. Not just a little slow, really slow. My other drive is 4-5x faster with transfers.Another problem I've encountered is a Windows 10 update somehow killed the USB-C to A connection to this drive. Now it only works from C to C. The drive is unrecognizable on two computers unless I use that particular cable. Weird, but I'm glad it's not (yet) bricked.

I have been using various RAIDs over the last decade, including WD RAIDs configured to RAID 1 (mirrored memory in which the 2 enclosed RAID Drives record 2 exact copies of all files on separate drives for ultimate protection). While this does cut the full capacity in half, the purpose again is ultimate protection, not ultimate space. Formatted for RAID 1, I've now got 6 TB of fully protected storage. If one of the RAID's drives crashes, I can easily replace it myself. While I would have given the My Book Duo 12TB a 5-star rating, I am not happy that WD went with a flimsy plastic upper cover instead of the older metal one. Other than that minor issue, this is a winner.

When attached to my iMac, the drive throws errors frequently throughout the day hence rendering it unusable for any practical purpose. When diagnostics are run they come up clean. I have reconfigured it several times trying RAID 1 first and then RAID 0 with no luck (should have read reviews prior to purchasing). Manufacturer return policy is not easy to deal with. Not sure I'm going to bother as others seem to have reported getting replacements which were refurbs and had the same problem. Seems to be more of a software issue than a hardware issue. I suppose I'll use it as a $600.00 paperweight. Just to be clear - none of this falls on Best Buy. WD needs to resolve the problems with this particular model. Their other drives seem to work well.

WD My Book Duo 16TB Purchased 4 of these from 2 different distributors. So far they work OK but generate lots of heat (witch is normal). You can use a timer to minimize the heat, if you can afford about 30 seconds wake up of these drives. They work fast under Win 10.but because of poor heat dissipation I was not impressed with these new drives. Because of that I decided to use all 8 of the internal WD Red 8TB drives in my Synology DS1815+ NAS. All drives worked but the performance is terrible. Mechanically all of them are noisy, very poorly balanced, works like my old washer and dryer set (well almost). Using four screws in screw less drive holders did not helped much. The write performance is poor. During file writing, drives makes a lots of noise, starting at ... MoreWD My Book Duo 16TB Purchased 4 of these from 2 different distributors. The write performance is poor. During file writing, drives makes a lots of noise, starting at about 100MB/s than the transfer speed falls to about a zero MB/s for a few seconds and than keep working again with some of these hiccups. They all works, but the performance of my old WD RED 4TB drives is much, much better (quite, well balanced, now such problems during file writing). I made significant investment and I am very disappointed with this new WD product.
A very important fact that was not in the WD literature is that there is a hardware encryption that prevents the drive from being read in any other enclosure. In my case the WD Duo enclosure went bad and while the drives were ok I had no way to read them. WD does not sell replacement enclosures. They also no longer have replacement drives for my unit. So if you are out of warranty, you are out of luck. WD’s solution to this problem is to provide you with a list of third party data recovery contractors. I contacted one of them and was told that the cost would range from $800 to $2,700 and that they would need the enclosure. If I had a working enclosure I wouldn’t need them. So without having backed up the WD Duo, I would have lost all my data. I can think of no reason for WD employing hardware encryption other than to force you to buy the replacement drives from them for as long as they chose to sell them. This characteristic of the drive should be made clear in the WD literature so that people can make an informed I bought the older model of this WD Duo to run in a RAID 1 configuration. I used it to have a protected working/storage solution for my photography and fortunately backed it up with offsite storage. My thinking, based on the WD literature, was that if one of the drivers failed all I had to do was replace the bad drive and rebuild the RAID or I could even pull the good drive and put it in another enclosure. As it turned out, none of this was possible.decision in purchasing it.
I ordered this wd 16tb raid unit to replace a failed 12tb wd my book duo raid unit. After much more research, much to my dismay, despite the settings to mirror the drives, THE DATA WAS IRRECOVERABLE , by me, wihout large expense. These wd raid enclosures use AES hardware encryption that helps prevent unauthorized access. That means you, the owner of the data. If the enclosure fails, as appears they too frequently do, you are out of luck. This is hardly a good solution for data safety. Be aware the AES hardware encryption that helps prevent unauthorized access cannot be user selected as it should be. It is reliant on the circuit board in the enclosure. BTW, wd cannot see fit to sell replacement enclosures. A bad choice for data security and I'm returning the package ... MoreI ordered this wd 16tb raid unit to replace a failed 12tb wd my book duo raid unit. Incidentally, the two original 6TB drives still work fine albeit after a reformat which erased all my archived data.
The main circuit board failed along with one of the two drives. Had it set to RAID 1 (Mirrored). WD tech support said nothing can be done except to buy a new enclosure and put the other working mirrored pair into the new enclosure. Since I purchased two of these units I was able to salvage the data from the working drive but will never buy again because of possibility of enclosure circuit board failure.
The hard drives are okay and good value for money. However, on my M1 Mac they crash a lot. The drive utilities software is very bad and I have older My Book Duos im not using, because the cause errors all the time. Data feels less save due to these problems.
I bought this unit because it was cheaper for me to take the two 8TB hard drives out of this instead of buying them individually. You lose a years worth of warranty (2 vs 3 years), but you save over $100. As far as the enclosure itself, you should take note that there is forced encryption that is applied to the hard drives themselves. This cannot be turned off so if your enclosure fails (not the drives), you will NOT have access to your files for recovery. The drives are encrypted and are not recognized outside of this enclosure. I bet you are wondering what it the likely hood of the enclosure itself fails. Well, the enclosure itself is pretty cheap -- mostly plastic. Some people have already reported accidentally breaking the USB port or the enclosure being damaged ... MoreI bought this unit because it was cheaper for me to take the two 8TB hard drives out of this instead of buying them individually. I bought this to replace a pair of 6TB drives that I had been manually keeping synced. Seemed better to have a mirrored drive and more space at the same time. Now I have one cable and one power supply. I haven't had this unit long enough to truly rate it.However, this is my 2nd one of these. I bought one a year previously. I use this first one as my media drive. After 10 months it reported that one of the drives had failed. As a mirrored unit, it continued to work with no loss of data. But I had no clue which drive had failed. The WD Drive Utility would not tell me and WD Support told me it was supposed to, After too much time on the phone with the helpful Support person, he decided I should return the drive. I also like that the WD Drive Utility provides so much more information that you can normally get for an external drive on with MacOS.
