Foam mattress Nemo SWITCHBACK SHORT The Switchback is a foam mattress of the brand Nemo. It is a compact product, easy to transport, very light and practical too. It is made from a closed cell foam which makes it stable and very soft to the touch. Its thin metallized plate allows it to be even more efficient in terms of thermal insulation and can be used at temperatures around -1°C. In order to have a very compact mattress that remains thick enough, Nemo has implemented a system to obtain a mattress 1.5 x thicker than its competitors with equal weight and dimensions. The result is a mattress that is 3 cm thick, 300 g and which measures 51 x 13 cm when folded up.

A Bombproof Sleeping Pad Fit for Efficiency

Can't pop, can't break.- Does not retain stickers, goatheads, etc. This is significant because at night when I would bed down there wouldn't be any stickers or other pokey things disrupting my sleep.- Easy to use. This pad was particularly useful during the day when I would stop and take an afternoon nap. Super convenient. I also doubled it as a sit mat by folding it in half and putting it on a rock or a log. The world becomes your seat!- Warm. Even though the R-value is low, I never had warmth issues. I camped a few times below freezing and stayed warm all night when coupled with a 1/8" closed cell foam torso-length sleep mat. Granted, I would be selective about my camp sites and prep the ground prior to use.CONS- Not the most comfortable, but this is to be expected when balancing reliability and comfort. To combat the discomfort, you need to be creative when setting up camp. As previously mentioned, I coupled this with a torso-length 1/8" closed cell foam roll-up mat and would ensure I removed rocks, sticks and any other debris prior to bedding down. If possible, I'd fluff up the dirt or pine needles if they were around and this made a large different in comfort. Additionally, I would be super exhausted at the end of the day and that likely contributed to me falling asleep easily.- Orange vs. silver. I didn't notice any difference between the silver side and the orange side as far as warmth/coolness goes. Seems to be a marketing gimmick but maybe I wasn't in conditions that allowed me to truly test this feature. In conclusion, if you're looking for a reliable sleeping pad that'll get the job done and allow you to crush miles then this is the way to go. No risk or worries of leaky blow-up pads and easy deployment when it's time to set up camp. Not the most comfortable, but that's the tradeoff when you're looking for reliability.

This pad proved to be super durable and had only a couple small cuts here and there, nothing to detract from its function.2. Packability - It doesn't pack down to a small capsule like some inflatables, but strapping this to the outside of the pack was just fine.

And honestly, that’s still cheaper than many of the sleeping pad competitors out there. I’m not disappointed I bought them. We now have 4, one for each member of the family. I’m drooling over the Hest Dually but can’t fit it in my little Subaru, and also don’t feeling like spending $500 for camping equipment. So for the 4ish camping trips a year that we take, these will work just fine.

Great foam accordion pad
27 July 2023

Decided to give this a try for a 4 day backpacking/14er adventure I just completed. I've had the original Thermalite Z Lite for years and found it to be barely adequate, but never quite comfortable. I decided to give the Switchback a try as it was listed as the same weight, thicker foam, and packs smaller. It was as described, I'm happy with the purchase, and was more comfortable on my trip than if I would have used the old Z Lite. I did notice the extra .15" of thickness as I slept. Of course an inflatable pad would be more comfortable, but I was looking for light weight, cost effective, and durable. This pad fit that bill. Also on my scale I was pleasantly surprised to find the Switchback to weigh 13.7 oz vs. 14.5 oz on my Z Lite.

Great, ESSENTIAL addition to camping trips
12 January 2023

After two camping trips without a sleeping pad, this came in handy so much for my Big Sur trip! I like that it is easily collapsible so I didn't have to spend time inflating and deflating it myself and rolling it up like my friends, though I wish it came with a protective bag or cover like the inflatable ones. It claims to insulate but I didn't feel much of it during December-January at Big Sur during rainy season. I am 5'3" and the short version had my feet sticking out from the pad; I opted for the longer pad afterwards. Though I worry about the pad ripping over time due to heavy use and handling, I overall recommend this product for beginner camper.

Nemo Switchback Pad for more than just sleeping.

Super light and comfy for lounging at camp. At first it was a toss-up between the Nemo and the Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite Sol. I'm 6'2, 195 and a side sleeper. The Nemo is almost a .25" thicker than the Therm-a-Rest, and it's offered in 2 sizes: with the smaller, lighter size at $10 cheaper. Done! This was originally purchased to be an addition to my Big Agnes AXL Air for increased thermal retention as well as much needed protection for the AXL on rough ground. I chose the Small @ 51" long due to weight (4oz lighter) and less bulky when folded (1" thinner, and 5" shallower). I reasoned that my head is already off the ground on my makeshift pillow so I could shift the pad down to my lower neck/shoulders and I could put my day's hiking clothes under the last 20" of air pad ... MoreSuper light and comfy for lounging at camp. I reasoned that my head is already off the ground on my makeshift pillow so I could shift the pad down to my lower neck/shoulders and I could put my day's hiking clothes under the last 20" of air pad from mid-calf to heels for warmth and air pad protection (if needed) thus shaving the weight and bulk of the "regular" Nemo. And technically this has worked pretty well. But where I really found this to shine was 2 specific needs:1 - Dry sit/kneel space: During the day resting for lunch along the trail and lounging in camp. Since it's external to the backpack it's easy to un-clip and unfold for sitting, and if lunch turns in to a mid-day siesta - so be it! Especially great when the ground is wet from dew or outright rain; providing a non-mud soaked, dry perch on ground/rock/log or wooden bench.2 - Non-slip sleeping: The Nemo pad is great for keeping the AXL Air from sliding on the slick nylon tent floor or Poly-cro ground sheet (in cases of meadow crashing sans a tent). It's not a perfect adhesion, but since I sleep like a mobile home in a tornado, it's better than nothing.(Bonus) - I also like that it floats. Which was not an original consideration, but I've found useful when there's an opportunity to swim and you just want to be lazy - or for youth, where you would need a safety float.I bind mine near the ends with 2 thin velcro straps to keep it folded when NOT strapped to my pack for sitting or swimming and they keep the folds from catching branches when hiking since my pack straps where it's stashed are kind of central to the pack body and this pad is the width of the pack.

I purchased this to replace a similar item; the previous one had >150 nights on it and I thought I'd gift the well-used one to my sister's dog. My first hike with this was a Long Trail (Vermont) hike. For those with many miles on their bodies, this alone was not adequate. I am a rotisserie sleeper (I frequently toss and turn from side to side, back down, and belly down). I do not use a hammock. Every morning I woke with sore hips due to the lack of cushioning. I solved this by adding a Therm-A-Rest short pad, and it solved the problem perfectly. Most users will consider this a one- and two-half season pad. It's R-value is inadequate for chilly early and late-season use. However, the addition of a short inflatable pad makes it useful for colder nighttime temps. One of its biggest issues is that one usually carries it on the outside of the pack. Being exposed to inclement weather makes is unusable until it is wiped free of moisture. Much of where I hike (Northeast US) has plenty of precipitation, and I usually took about 20 minutes to wipe every divot--both sides--free of rain. For some, this could be a deal-breaker.On the bright side, it is impervious to puncture issues. A hole of any size does not affect the comfort or warmth. So, it's not perfect. Old people like me will probably find it too thin for a good night's sleep. But for the price and durability, I will recommend it with the mentioned caveats.

Simplicity - Fits My Needs

I bought this for my dogs to sleep on while hammock camping in cooler weather, but this will also be my go-to pad for when I do occasionally camp in a tent. I am done with inflatable products, I've had enough leaks happen in expensive pads now to know that CCF pads are my bread and butter. Also it's just so much simpler. No not as comfortable, but the fact that this thing folds and unfolds in seconds, is just as light, and is basically indestructible in the sense that it can't get a leak is more than enough to compensate for the diminished comfort, which isn't all that bad anyways. I've slept in worse conditions. It does keep me warm down to about the mid 30's, then I feel like the cold starts creeping through and I need to add another one. But when it gets that cold I'm normally in a hammock with a nice thick down underquilt so that's not usually an issue for me. No desire to sleep on the ground when it gets that cold out. So all in all, it's a good pad, so much less hassle than an inflatable, cheaper, and does the job which is ultimately to keep you warm to a degree. Would buy again.

The advantages and disadvantages of closed-cell foam pads are well-known and described in other reviews, and this pad is typical in those respects, so I'll focus on issues specific to this particular pad. I have this pad and the similar Thermarest Z-lite Sol. The NEMO is a little thicker when I try to compare functional thickness (maybe 1/4 inch thicker), and a bit more comfortable. It definitely folds up a little thinner than the Z-lite Sol, even though the two pads have identical width and length, probably 3/4" less when I compare the two. I liked that about the NEMO, but realistically that won't make a difference in most uses, since most people will strap this on the outside of the pack, rather than trying to fit it inside a pack. It does appear to me, after a little use, that the NEMO gets abraded and breaks down somewhat more easily than the Thermarest. Both pads are the same dimensions and both would benefit greatly from an extra 1.5-2 inch width. That would only add about an ounce to the weight, but it would help keep my elbows/arms from sliding off the sides, and it would make the pads useful for protecting or adding insulation under a 22" or 24" wide inflatable mattress. My big complaint about the NEMO is that it's noisy. When I move around, it makes sort of a squeaky sound, like a softer version of the sound of fabricating animals out of balloons. Unlike the Z-lite Sol, the Switchback is made to be used with the shiny (aluminized?) part facing down. (I'm not sure why.)I found it much quieter to use the Switchback with the shiny side up. Even then, it is a little noisier than the Z-lite Sol, which makes very little noise at all. The noise of the Switchback with orange side up isn't as annoying as some of the noisiest insulated air mattresses that have aluminized mylar layers inside the mattress, but it definitely is loud enough to annoy some tent-mates. That might still be true, albeit to a lesser extent, using the Switchback shiny side up. To be fair, I suppose the squeaky nature might diminish substantially over time -- I've only used the Switchback a few nights (and I have used the Z-lite Sol a few nights longer), but I'm doubtful that the noise of the Switchback would decrease a lot, and as noted above it seems like the pad won't last for extended use anyway. Unless you plan to use this pad in a single-person tent, or you're otherwise sure noise won't be a concern, I suggest you either get the Thermarest Z-lite Sol instead, or you try the NEMO Switchback in the store to see if the advantages I listed above are worth the squeakiness.

Tough pad for tough backs!
24 May 2023

This pad is exactly what it says it is. It’s a tough versatile pad that you can take anywhere. But it does make for a very firm sleeping surface. As a side sleeper, this can be painful at times. I have found that if I place this pad on top of a patch of moss or grass, it’s not so bad and I can actually get a pretty decent night sleep. But on a hard surface such as compacted dirt or rock, I wake up in the middle of the night with sore hips. I’d imagine if you are a back sleeper, this wouldn’t be an issue and it would be more comfortable. This pad is great if you need something bomeproof and can handle a little bit of uncomfortableness. Overall, I am happy with my purchase and would recommend it with the caveats I mentioned above.
