Finally picked this up as my 4th or 5th router in two weeks and have been pretty happy with it since.Been using this particular router for almost 10 months now, and haven't had many issues. The user interface is nice, but a bit complicated. It takes a decent amount of research to be able to set everything up properly, and might not be the best options for people looking to just "buy and plug in."After getting everything configured, connecting has been (mostly) painless. I have a two story 2,300 square foot home with the router centered in the middle of the home. We have three smart home devices, nest door bell, two cell phones, two macbooks, smart TV and 2 ipads almost constantly connected and utilizing some degree of bandwidth on the 2.4 and 5ghz channels. I also have my PS4 hardwired with cat 6 ethernet. We have had once software update since we've owned it, it took 5 minutes to reboot and reset and worked fine afterwards. There is an app you can download on your phone which is nice, you can connect remotely to your router to check status and update connections as you need. While the market doesn't have many great options for routers in the 1 GB/s market. This router can get me pretty consistently around 500 mb/s on the 5ghz channel on my laptop (with other devices), and maybe 600 mb/s through with the hardwire cat 6 cables. Not a terrible price, and would recommend if nothing else newer on the market has better specs.

I messed with Duma OS settings for a while to no avail, so i gave Netgear support a call (please don't call netgear support it has to be one of the worst ive ever tried to contact.)First guy i called: I tell him my issue, he says alright and to wait a minute; sure i say. And 10 minutes later he hangs up on me. Alright.. maybe its just one bad egg.. and i call again. Second guy seems way more willing to help and i explain my issue.. however.. it seems thatwent in one ear and out the other, because i had to repeat my issue for him multiple times, also explaining that yes, im already logged into DumaOS so whatever might need to be done on there can be done quickly without a hassle or him needing to explain how to access it. "Ok well what you are going to want to do is type in your address bar, routerlogin.net".. Sigh... Fine.. So 30 minutes pass, he hasnt even attempted to help me, after asking for the router serial number, saying he got it, then asking for it again 5 minutes later? Even though i said i can repeat it if he didnt catch something?? Anyway, this entire call which wasted nearly an hour of my time ended with him not even attempting to give me a solution, and then trying to sell me a $110 dollar internet security package that he claims will fix my problem (even though my other router does not have this problem at all). I tell him i am not comfortable spending that at this time and will call back if i decide to buy it, but this guy is relentless and will not take no for an answer, so after 10 minutes of him trying to convince me, i just hung up.TL;DR Whoever owned this before me must have had a similar issue as i had (i assume), sent it in to whoever he got it from, they didnt fix the issue correctly, it was resold for $150 dollars, i got it, didnt work, netgear support is awful and just tried to squeeze more money from me, and im going to avoid buying another router from walmart in the future.

I am a competitive gamer. So naturally I want to be performing at my best consistently. I have the fastest internet package and upgraded to the best modem/router my internet provider offered. Although their equipment was their top of the line gear, I rarely had back to back matches with a good connection. I tried upgrading and replacing everything I could to help me with secure a reliable connection. Once I hooked up my nighthawk XR500 with Duma’s geo-filter, I realized this was the missing link I was looking for. My gameplay drastically improved because I had a reliable, stable connection with low ping, zero packet loss, and no lag spikes. Great Router
7 December 2021

Bought this router awhile ago. 1st one I got wouldn't stay synced, so took back to Best Buy and got it replaced. Second is alot better but every once in a while I would still lose internet and had to reboot. I finally decided to buy my own ARRIS cable modem for NJ OPTIMUM 300. Upgraded to the latest firmware this November 2021 and router would not stay connected. Did a factory reset on the modem and I am getting blazing speeds, solid connection with no drops. Router allows my to run 2 xbox, 2 streaming TV, 3 phones, 3 laptops all with no buffer. Great signal through out 1400 sqft house. No problems connecting any device. The trick for me was that cable modem and now this router ROCKS! Don't use the modems the ISPs rent you. Buy your own!

Great range, connection control lacking

I've been playing with this router for 4 hours per day for 6 days. The setup time was average, they push you to the mobile app, but I had much better luck when I connected through the LAN port. Once I did that, setup was a snap.My star deduction is related to the DUMA OS monitoring app both by phone app and online. Anything connected through the mesh extender shows as offline, same for anything thing connected through a guest access. I know they are online because the first 2 days was spent figuring out what connection belonged to which device. I have 25 of them. Had to go through every IP and/or mac address.I now have 3 connections showing online, connected directly to the router, everything else shows offline. Not cool, since I have 1 computer and 6 security cameras connected and operational at this minute that I can see for sure are fully online. Further, since everything shows offline, when I block the connections with the app, they register as blocked, but in reality they stay fully connected. This is a large flaw, and now that I think about it, I am taking off another star, because connections control is the main function of this gaming router. Yes the firmware is fully updated.Other than the connection monitoring and control, the router is superb. The extender is seamless, and fast, and the range of the router with one extender is fantastic. I have cameras at least 300ft from the router and they are connected with still 2 bars of signal, the signal flows through my 2800sqft 2 story concrete home with ease. Everything in the home has at least 87% signal strength.Overall for range, reliability, and setup the router is great, for connection control and monitoring it comes up very sub par.

This router allowed me to have the control I needed to play games at a very high level. Prior to my router purchase my online gaming skill was being limited by internet connections. Any game that is giving me trouble this router allows me to take back control of the bad routing and connections for a good gaming experience. Outside of that I am also able to control every device in the house which allows me to enjoy the simple things outside of gaming as well in case there is some congestion going on that I normally wouldn’t be able to fix.

The first thing that struck me about this router when a removed it from the box, is that it is huge. Upon further inspection, I found it's huge size is unnecessary. It could be at least 20-30% smaller. Not only is it huge, there is no way to mount it on a wall. I had to make my own brackets to do so. Plugging in USB devices are very cumbersome because of the excess size of it leaving the ports deep inside the case. The same can be said about the two outer antennas. It took me several attempts at setting it up because it kept giving me a an webpage error after trying to set a password and had to reset it to factory defaults no less than 3 times. However the UI is a bit sluggish as a whole. It has no way to group MAC addresses together to disable them if necessary like some of their other routers do. Once again the choices for DDNS service providers are exceptionally weak. You have to be careful with the Geo-Filter as you can narrow it so much, you will not be able to connect to your favorite games at all.The Ping Heatmap has a very limited amount of online games you can use. What's strange is in the Geo-Filter I can select Overwatch, but in the Ping Heatmap, it's not even listed. So I don't know how that is supposed to work.Overall it's an ok router. I'm not that impressed by it.

It got to a point where I left the monitor open to see that the DL traffic completely dropped out. So I called their tech support team. The first instance I had took me 4 times of calling to successfully get into their queue. Their phone tree either dropped my call or froze up and put me into oblivion. The first instance I had took me 4 times of calling to successfully get into their queue. Their phone tree either dropped my call or froze up and put me into oblivion. So the first time I spoke to someone the connection was terrible. I heard about every 5th word they said. Finally the call disconnected. When the rep called back I found out that this was the incorrect queue and was transferred to another queue. After sending an email a technician called me at 11:44 PM to troubleshoot the router with me. Once I told them that they woke me up since I had to be at work early the next morning I requested that they call at 9 am. After waiting until 9:55 I called them and as I entered their queue someone called me back. Once again their connection was terrible and we were disconnected again. After speaking to a tech they updated the firmware and lowered the CTS/RTS levels. This helped for approximately 18 hours. Once again I experienced the drops and in similar fashion, nothing was wrong from the modem and the traffic was getting trapped in the router. Unfortunately it would take longer for the dl bandwidth to return than it did the first time. After tolerating this for a couple of days I attempted to email their techs again. I was given a number to call and when finally reaching someone (due to all the same phone tree issues as the first time) I was told that I called the wrong number....yeah the one they told me to call. This rep attempted to transfer me to the "correct queue". After waiting approximately 4 minutes to hear the queue music the call dropped shortly thereafter. This rep called me back and tried to transfer me to the correct queue once again. I waited for 5 and a half hours and ended up quitting as I had real life duties to tend to like give my kid a bath and put him to bed. Although I have not concrete evidence I do believe that this rep was engaging in call avoidance and simply put me on hold to pad his call stats because I could hear the break in the hold music several times while waiting for 5 and a half hours.I WILL NOT PURCHASE ANOTHER NETGEAR PRODUCT DUE TO THEIR LACK OF SUPPORT AND WHAT I BELIEVE TO BE SHODDY FIRMWARE.I posted this same review on another site and it was removed because I did not purchase the item there but I did buy and return it here. So the brand ambassadors that scour the reviews can attempt to have this removed but I believe Micro Center to have more integrity than to remove this review because it exposes Netgear's ineffective products and terrible support.

After 8 months and the router still under warranty I can not get an RMA.I had automatic updates on. They installed corrupt firmware that disabled my router, if you look on the internet and even the NETGEAR community website, you will see that this a problem with the XR500 and a lot of other model routers. NETGEAR is also aware of this problem and have posted all of the routers that are affected by this yet they do nothing to fix it.The warranty for their software is only 90 days of the 1-year warranty. They went into the router and said the hardware was OK, it was a software problem. They wanted to charge me $89.00 for a 6-month Gearhead contract to fix the software they designed, developed and installed. After the last firmware update the router would connect to the internet but would only transmit 5-8 Mps on both LAN and Wi-Fi. They said it is a software not a hardware issue and not covered.I feel like they DDoS'ed me and are now holding my router for ransom. I have tried to get an RMA from them, but they just want to keep on going in and looking at the router telling me it is the only way to get an RMA. It has been looked at several times, but they still will not give me an RMA.If you buy a NETGEAR router, make sure you pay for the Gearhead contract, make a backup of the system while it is functioning properly or disable automatic updates. If I had disabled auto update, I am sure the router would still work. The 90-day warranty on the software tells me they have no confidence in their software, or they will install corrupt software to try to get money out of people that did not get the gearhead contract.I have used NETGEAR routers for 20+ years with no problems but now I will never buy another one nor recommend them.
