To preface my review I received this router from my boss as they were putting in a new router at work, and said this one no longer worked. I took it home and fixed the issue in a matter of minutes. The NETGEAR Nighthawk X6S AC4000 is a solid option for the price point. While it lacks Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 5 more than gets the job done in my house. The router has a fairly long range, and even on the opposite side of a pretty large house I retain a good connection. Being able to control the router via the Nighthawk app on my phone rather than signing in through a browser is extremely convenient. There’s also an optional voice control setting though I don’t use it myself. This router features MU-MIMO. You can buy a Nintendo Switch for that price. That being said this router has been great and the app setup is super easy.

Recently moved and needed to upgrade my router for gigabit internet. First router I got from TP-Link didn't work with Spectrum internet. Supposed to, but didn't.I didn't really want to spend over 100$ on a router but after checking out the Nighthawk and finding a good deal online I took the leap.I am blown away with how good this is. I have wicked fast internet all over the house and outside. I can be in the garage streaming no problem.Features? Man does this come with a ton of features. I just hooked up ReadyCloud the other dayfor easy file sharing. It was super simple to setup and I will definitely be building myself a NAS to hook up to this! Not sure what else to say. If you were on the fence about getting this.. Buy with confidence. I love it.

I will keep it short, because the problem is rather narrowly defined (at least in my case). For basic everyday people, who know nothing about networking, the R8000 Nighthawk router may seem to work well. However, there are a lot of people like myself, who are neither expert or beginner, that do like to customize the router through the user interface. The problem with the firmware/software that I am referring to is the ability to re-name your connected devices through the "attached devices" tab. The instructions at the bottom of the attached devices page tell you to highlight the device and click edit. THERE IS NO EDIT BUTTON and you can't highlight the devices. I did a lot of research online and it turns out that this has been a problem for years, not just with the R8000 router, but with all their routers. The word on the street (in forums) is that Netgear is fully aware of this problem and will not/can not fix it. I then read on a Netgear forum that you can use the Netgear Nighthawk App on your mobile device to rename devices. I tried that and it failed too. Quite frankly, the app seems to be rather basic and has limited functionality. Several years ago, I had a Netgear N900 router, and I do remember being able to change the device names, so it did work back then. I am also reading that if you go backwards many firmware revisions, that you can get the device renaming to work. I am not doing that. I have about 30 connected devices and not being able to re-name them makes it impossible to see what is running on my network and is a security issue, because I can't determine if I have intruders. I also run a Netgear R6700 V3 on the same network as an Access Point. I am not able to re-name the devices listed on its attached device tab either. Netgear, why is this issue never fixed?? I am not a software engineer, but one would think that the people who make the device should be able to correct the issue. I would love to hear from someone on this.

I've been a Netgear user for many years and am giving my honest opinion. I got this router to replace my X4s that was having issues; nevertheless the transition was not as smooth as I thought. For some reason, this router has an issue with the 2.4 GHz band as also noted by other reviewers. The firmware has been updated and yet the problem remains. Some devices simply cannot join the band and it always says password error. This does not happen with the 5GHz bands (even when using the same password). Also there is also 1 USB port vs. 2 I had on the X4s which is an older model. But other than that, it has been working fine so far. My solution was to
I bought this router for the family since there were multiple devices that were going to connect. The three channels seemed to be the best option. For a while it has performed as intended. Three console gaming systems, five cell phones, two smart tv's, five Alexa's, plus my kids friends, no lag no issues, except. Netgear and Android do not like each other. There are many instances in chatroom and forums where this is proven, and it is. I have had to reset the internet from my modem, which is also a Netgear Nighthawk product, do to not being able to access the internet or really slow speed. About once a month if not more. Fast forward a month, I have moved to a new state with a new ISP. Two of the three SSID's disappeared, later to find they were renamed, all three SSID's now have the same name. Odd, but ok, did a complete erase of all SSID's and re started the router from scratch, renamed the SSID's again. Conducted a WIFI analyzer around the apartment, good signal strength all three channels. Perfect, until a week later. One of two SSID's are gone, but the router, since I logged into it, says no issues, and broadcasting the SSID's. I believe the issue is from a stale IP address so I am going to try to see if fixing that clears the issue. I have just never had any issue with Netgear products until I bought into the Nighthawk line of products. So be advised, you might have to do more work with this line than you may or may not want to,
In my opinion it is one of the best tri-band routers on the market. I added this router to my ISP modem and my network speeds increased as expected. This is a very capable router especially with its robust tri-band operation allowing users to connect in 3 different modes. For me I can run my own personal network for gaming, run another for my family to log on to their devices, and use the 3rd band as for guest to log onto as well. I definitely recommend this product. My only issue is that the antennas are pretty flimsy unlike the antennas on the R7000 series.
This router has been superb to say the least in everything asset that I needed it for. For gaming it excels at maintaining connected I need as well as speed and never goes down nor fluctuates in any facet. For general internet use it excels at the same functions for me and my roommates as well as guests who come also. Its design I would say is pretty unique and cool. Setup plus the app for it are pretty simple for beginners getting their first router, then for experienced people it has useful settings, isn't a headache in the setup, updates are smooth and just does everything it needs too really well. I don't have a single negative that comes to mind with this product and I've use this product for a long time the only thing I might say negatively would be perhaps ... MoreThis router has been superb to say the least in everything asset that I needed it for. I bought this router because I like the ability to access my routers administrative options. My Askey router from Spectrum didn’t allow me to access much of anything. I would have given 5 stars, but my download speed is actually a little less on the nighthawk via wired connection, but wireless is faster than the Askey. Upload speed is a little higher on both wired, and wireless with the NETGEAR though so that’s nice. I guess I’m willing to sacrifice a decline in download speed in order to be able to customize my router personally. The nighthawk seems more stable when playing two Xbox’s, because I can have one wired while the other is on its own wireless guest band. I prefer to use a guest band for wireless connections, so that I can prevent the wireless connection ... MoreI bought this router because I like the ability to access my routers administrative options. It just gives me a little extra security. The Askey wouldn’t allow me to personally place devices on separate bands. Instead the Askey would automatically prioritize, and separate utilizing its MU-MIMO capabilities which would sometimes kick my daughter, and or I from multiplayer sessions we were playing together. I have had my eye on these X6 routers for a few years now, and I am ecstatic to finally have one. Although I’ve only had my certified refurbished NETGEAR nighthawk tri-band X6 for about a week, I’ll be doing another review probably every 6 months to a year. As it stands right now however I’m a happy new member of the NETGEAR family. Thank you NETGEAR.
