I have owned a number of Traeger Grills over the years and the Ironwood 850XL is a deal changer. I have always loved Traeger however the cleanup was always a pain until now. I was a bit optimistic when the salesperson at Legacy ACE in College Station explained how the new clean out system worked. I ran a bag of pellets through the grill and cooked on it for two weekend. I was amazed at how easy it was to clean. I bought a hard plastic puddly spreader and scraped everything down the hole into the bucket. The bucket design is awesome because your dog can’t get into it after a cook. Awesome Job On This New Model!!!

I've had the Ironwood XL for a couple months now, and I use it 2-3 time a week. I purchased this solely with the mindset of having a pellet grill that produces more smoke than what I had (first gen Timberline and a Texas Elite). It has met that requirement well. In my opinion, smoked food off this grill tastes closer to what you'd expect from a traditional smoker, and it has the most smoky flavor that I've had to date off a pellet grill, even without the use of Super Smoke. This thing constantly smokes, even at 275 degrees. That might be what I love most about it. Gone are the days of cooking at a super low heat for a few hours to maximize smoke.I thought everything was packaged well, and the video instructions available were top-notch. I was never lost on what to put where. A screwdriver and wrench were supplied. Use of the wrench was, at time, difficult in a few spots, but otherwise, assembly was a breeze. The controller is cool, although, I would be perfectly happy with it not having a touch screen (I worry about longevity), but it all works well. I really like that my pre-Traeger Meater probes connect to the controller. That alone has me using those probes much more than I used to, because I don't have to have the Meater block nearby anymore. I think the controller is very easy to figure out going through the options and whatnot. Integration to the app is solid. I think the app has come a long ways over the years.Cleanout is pretty slick. I feel the days of busting out the shop vac are going to be much fewer and far between. I'll occasionally take everything apart and just brush the ash into the Ash Keg. The firepot/box never has anything other than pellets in it (no ash clumps). Even under the firebox, there's very little that makes it in there. I was worried about not being able to use foil on the drip tray, but it hasn't been an issue. Just get yourself a plastic putty knife to scrape everything down into the Ash Keg. It's super quick to do.I like all the large side shelf, although, I am hopeful I can one day get the induction burner to put in there. I have the front shelf as well, so there is lots of space to work. One thing to note that I have experienced twice, but now I know to check. When cooking at higher heat (350), I've shut the grill down, and I would notice smoke coming out of the cap over the grease drain. Removing the ash keg I found there was some smoldering ash and grease in there (the first time this happened, the grill had been off for hours before I noticed when I went to cover the grill). I thought I had let it get too full, but it has happened another time on an empty liner. So I think you just need to be aware of this. I check it every time after a cook to be safe. The smoldering grease smoke makes the grill smell terrible. Fortunately, by the next cook, it was back to smelling great again. All in all, this thing does everything I want, and I've been really happy with it!

First ironwood xl lasted less than 1 week before shorting out due to water leaking in from the rear of the lid (through a loose rivet during manufacturing) and running down into ignitor. 2nd and 3rd units both missing hardware (home depots fault admittedly). The first grill also never succeeded in making it through the initial seasoning burn, which it attempted 3 times. Ended up just doing this manually by letting it burn for an hour at the highest temp setting. Finally (hopefully) have a functional and complete unit, and nothing but trouble with the required combo wifi/bt/location connection. The BT signal is too week to stay connected to phone or tablet inside the house even through only 1 wall. For the price point of this grill it should seriously be a lot less ... MoreFirst ironwood xl lasted less than 1 week before shorting out due to water leaking in from the rear of the lid (through a loose rivet during manufacturing) and running down into ignitor. 2nd and 3rd units both missing hardware (home depots fault admittedly). Unless things improve it will be the last traeger product I ever purchase, IF we even decide to keep it. I will highly recommend against this unit and brand to everyone I know.Last note, I was going to leave a picture very clearly showing the loose rivet leading to the short on the first unit but the option to leave apic is locked out for me on this review.

Product is really solid and was easy to put together (although you will need another set of hands to set it upright after assembly). I noticed a couple of the factory screws needed tightened, but easy to fix with the included screw driver. WiFi setup was a breeze and the auger primed the pellets without a hitch. When going through the seasoning process, it takes a couple of minutes for the pellets to ignite and a couple more minutes to get up to temp. Seasoning process was a breeze following the included instructions in the manual. I did notice that you get the most smoke from temps 225 and below and even more smoke utilizing the super smoke option. My Ironwood 885 had no problem getting to 500 degrees. Treager has decided that in order to make full use of your $1600 piece of equipment that they deserve access to your network information. They have built the grill such that it requires internet access in order to function with the app. For you non-techies, this is absolutely not necessary- only local connectivity should be required. It was a smarmy choice traeger made to snoop on your information as much as possible. You may ask, what can a grill know? That's the rub, you can't tell without cracking into the firmware. If nothing else they have your wifi information and who knows what else they are snooping. I don't allow any device in my network to contact the internet without strict firewall rules and deep packet inspection and as far as I'm concerned a grill ... MoreTreager has decided that in order to make full use of your $1600 piece of equipment that they deserve access to your network information. I don't allow any device in my network to contact the internet without strict firewall rules and deep packet inspection and as far as I'm concerned a grill should never need to connect to the outside world. You can build any sort of nasty snooping functionality into a closed system like this. This is a dirty, sneaky back door into your network that most people won't even notice. From a practical point of view, it also means you can't use the app if your ISP is down.I just bought this grill and will never buy another Traeger product again, I don't care how well it does or doesn't cook.
Traeger products are poorly made. They always have issues with temp management. The components keep breaking. I can usually figure out what is wrong and it is always a defective part. It will either be the RTD or the controller will give a bad signal to the auger. I had times when it work below 250 but when the temp was adjusted the auger stopped spinning. Broken fans were another issue. This is on multiple grilled over the years. I was fix buddies all the time and they gave up because of the cost and tie of the parts. Just a terrible product. Buy a Reqtec.
I really like the Traeger app and WiFire. I’ve done several cooks. Following Traeger recipes on the Ironwood XL no longer seems wise to me. Temps and times haven’t worked out yet. I use longer times and higher goal temperatures than the recipe calls for. Changing out wood pellets is a pain. Shoot is too far in for a 5 gallon bucket to reach and it takes several times of manually pushing pellets to discharge shoot. Everyone has liked the smoked food flavor.located in Minnesota and would cautiously recommend Traeger…or not.
Pros: intuitive controls. Watch the temp until things settle in. Very well engineered, even the grill cover exudes quality.Cons: Temp can overrun the target 50-deg until temp settles down. Be prepared to open the lid for a quick cool off. A shelf under the smoker would have been nice.Biggest con: lack of smoke. Yes, I’ve tried the “super smoke†, but I want smoke at all temps. I supplement by using stainless steel 12†;pellet tubes (highly recommended) with a propane torch. (Don’t overfill these pellet smoking tubes - you want an air gap above the pellets the entire length of the tube). Mix in wood chips recommended.Traeger quickly achieves a “blue smoke†, which is highly desirable, but only after you have fully smoked your meat. I've had this grill for about a year and I've tried cooking everything imaginable on it and not once have I said "Wow, that's really good!". As a smoker, it is practically non-existent. It imparts no smoke flavor whatsoever to meat or poultry, even on Super Smoke. For steaks, it can barely manage to make faint grill marks, much less sear anything. They say a grill should be over 700º on its surface to cook steaks. I got an infrared thermometer and the best it could do was about 475º. There is no direct proximity to any flame. The firebox is at the bottom, under a steel cover which is under a steel drip pan. It's really nothing more than an oven. I bought a set of Grill Grates and they did nothing to improve performance. It's really nothing more than an oven. I bought a set of Grill Grates and they did nothing to improve performance. Tonight after shutting it down, smoke came billowing out of the pellet hopper, so I assume there's a jam in the tunnel burning away. I shut it down and moved it away from the house. I am so done with this thing. It has to go. There are used Traeger grills on Craig's List for $200. I'll be lucky to get that. I think I'll just offer it for free and get rid of it. $1,350 down the drain. Just for the record, my Little Chief smoker is an awesome performer. Basically an aluminum box with a heat element but it blows Traeger away.
Purchase brand new May 20th 2023. Went through the proper seasoning process. Grill never made it to the 500° temp. Started the grill again and set to 500° to burn off residual oil. My first Cook was pork belly and a pork shoulder. Set temperature to 200° with super smoke. Grill achieves 200°. Then dropped to below 100°. Then the grill went up to 200° again. Then $530°. And caught on fire. Do not buy this product, it is a fire hazard and traeger simply does not have the bugs worked out.
