I took a very long time deciding to purchase this lens for my D3400 Nikon, my specific interest is wildlife (mostly fast moving flying birds and waterfowl) not people or sport use. I owned a 55-300VR Nikon lens and to be honest whilst it was a solid feeling lens I was appalled at the ridiculously slow focus / continual hunting / lens creep that went on. Also you could forget anything above 200mm as the sharpness was pretty poor in any light condition and even with stationery animals. Added to the focusing issues on moving objects you could not over ride with the manual focus ring without first moving the switch on the barrel to manual from automatic! This would invariably cause you to lose sight of the animal you were going to photograph or lose focus again very ... Where as the old 55-300VR was useless above 200mm this lens is razor sharp in good light at 300mm!! The other (equally as important benefit to this lens) is that it is SUPER fast at focusing and locks onto the subject incredibly quickly in even low light conditions which I was not expecting with the maximum aperture not appearing to be very good compared to some other lenses on the market. For me the fact you can over ride with the manual focus ring at anytime is a huge benefit and assists when selecting a specific bird from a flock or when they are among tree branches. Some people critisise that you have to change from manual to automatic and VR on / VR off via the camera menu system but it is no problem at all and very easy to do. I 100% recommend this lens to any NIkon DX owner but make sure that it is compatible with your cameras software!

I bought this to use with a Nikon 1 V3 and the FT-1 adapter. This lens is a great value and exceeded my expectations for sharpness. I also have the CX 70-300mm which is slightly sharper. However, with modern image processing software, the AF-P DX 70-300mm is excellent. The AF-P DX appears to have better optical image stabilization than the CX version. I bought this lens to future proof my fun little Nikon 1 cameras (which, together with their lenses, were discontinued by Nikon). The cameras and the CX lenses are great but many CX lenses tend to eventually die, apparently due to use of a tiny nylon gear inside that eventually wears out. While my CX lens version continues to work, I'll use this one on a 2nd body. And when the CX lens dies (as it may do), I'll just ... MoreI bought this to use with a Nikon 1 V3 and the FT-1 adapter. This is really an amazing lens, especially considering the unbelievably low price. Truly featherweight and very easy to use and handle, with silent and instantly fast autofocus and excellent VR that seems to give a few stops of advantage. The color rendition is beautiful, and with the appropriate camera (you must be sure your Nikon can use an AF-P lens) the addition of this lens makes it all unbelievably light to carry around. On one shooting trip, I used this lens and alternated it between a rented Nikkor 200-500 (fabulous lens), but later when I reviewed my photos I discovered that a great many I thought had been shot with the 200-500 had actually been shot with this lens, it was that good. The quality and performance of both lenses were more equal than I would ... MoreThis is really an amazing lens, especially considering the unbelievably low price. This lens is lovely to use, and I wouldnt part with it! I use it with both my D5600 and D7500, and its equally good with both cameras. Highly recommended if you are interested in this range.

GREAT LENS FOR THE PRICE!! I bought this 4 years ago for my daughter to take pictures of her children. She's been wanting a zoom lens, but did not want to pay the high price. When I purchased, it was 1/2 the cost of most zooms. The current price is still about a 2/3 of the cost. This is a good quality zoom for her use. Far away pics have great quality even when enlarged! It fits her camera well and automatically adjusts. She has the upgraded camera from ours. It fits ours, but does not automatically adjust, but still works great!!I gave 4 stars due to packaging. The package was not in the original packaging and was not marked as used or openbox. It had very little protection, luckily it did not get thrown around as typically happens in shipment. This lens is plenty sharp, has a nice zoom range, is very light, and for the price, is a terrific bargain. As with any lens, you have to use it for its best intended purpose to get the best results - i.e., this is not a fast lens, do not expect to take sports action pictures with it.I have seen reviews criticizing certain aspects of this lens - it has a plastic mount, theres no on-off switch for the VR, it comes with a white plastic slip-on rear lens cap instead of the proper black plastic screw-on cap. The plastic mount simply means you cant abuse it. Ive never had a plastic lens mount break in normal, reasonable use. The plastic construction is what creates the very light weight, and thats a good thing. The full-time VR has not been an issue for me at all. It ... The plastic construction is what creates the very light weight, and thats a good thing. The full-time VR has not been an issue for me at all. It behaves well when its on a tripod. And, my refurb lens came with the good black plastic rear lens cap.I should add that I use a D7100 - with the current firmware, this lens works fine, but I lack the ability to control the VR through the menu. As I said, it has not been an issue at all. This is the second refurb lens Ive bought from B&H. Both arrived spotless-clean, fully functional, no issues whatsoever. I have complete confidence in buying refurb lenses from B&H. The reduced prices have allowed me to get a lens that I otherwise would not have been able to afford (Nikkor 16-80 2.8-4), and to get this 70-300 at very little risk. Do not be afraid to go refurb. Finally - its $179, fer cryin out loud! Thats less than half the regular price. Its a ridiculously good deal.
Bought this lens 7 years ago new for $150. grey market, just after Nikon introduced it (sorry, no longer possible.) Have taken over 20,000 shots with it mostly at 300 mm. Mostly birds or other wildlife. Mostly on a D7500. I am completely satisfied with it. Yes the lens mount is plastic but I don't carry my camera by the lens. I do use the pro level Nikon 300mm f4 VR PF too. This $2000 lens is a tad sharper, and a lot heavier, but doesn't zoom. One thing I do notice is a little dust inside the front element which cleaning can't reach. A long way from being a real problem. Be careful not to accidentally change the focal length when handling the lens; there's no way to lock it at 300mm.If the lens broke I would not hesitate to replace it even at the $396 list price.
A great change to my 55-200mm which seems extremely noisy now, in comparison. Images are very sharp, Autofocus is very quick (maybe a little too quick at times), auto and manual focus is perfect for trying to focus past or through something (such as leaves). Perfect for wildlife or astro photography. And I've not even used it to shoot any kind of footage yet, which in theory is the reason for the quiet Pulse motor design. But I'm sure this will come in very handy when trying to record animals. This lens has caused me to seriously consider changing all my lenses to the AF-P lens. The only concern that I have found is occasionally the focus will change slightly (only when I have iso 100 selected) within the time it takes between focusing and fully taking the picture, as if somewhere along the way the lens thought I had depressed the auto focus again. I have found that by gently moving the focus wheel slightly back and forth (into focus again) helps to stop this. I have also found that the focus point system in manual mode does not focus on what you expect it to, this may be down to my setup, camera or even the firmware but when taking a quick snap of the moon you would expect it to focus on the biggest object. The camera seems to focus on the brightest object in the frame and thistends to be a star, but again this can be over come with auto or manually refocusing. I'm no expert but I love this lens. Hope this helps
Firstly let me put any doubts about this product to rest. This is a brand new and genuine Nikkor and it comes with a two year guarantee (already registered by the store).Slightly disappointing was the fact that it doesn’t come with the Nikkor packaging I was expecting. This was a present and so assumed it would come in a brand new Nikkor box with appropriate polystyrene packaging and paperwork . It came well package in bubble wrap and a used Nikkor box. When I queried this, Richard’s prompt reply was that they can offer the substantial discount because they buy these as kits and separate the component items from there. That’s fine by me since it’s the excellent lens I’m interested in but this is not clear from the website and only an issue this time as it was a ... This a quite inexpensive lens. It is also lightweight, which makes it good for traveling with a light-weight camera (like my nikon 1). I found the images from the lens to be quite good, especially considering I am taking them with a Nikon1 J5 camera. Shown is an infrared image of a conifer tree from 500 feet away at maximum zoom and wide open, and another full-color image from about 1500 feet away. The autofocus is fast (on a Nikon1 + the FT-1 adapter). I do not mind the DX (APS-C) constrainment of the image circle because the Nikon1 uses a only-slightly-smaller 1" CX form factor, so I am losing less of the image than if I were using a full frame/FX-constrained image circle. I like the manual override of auto-focus, and autofocusing is rapid (with the nikon1+FT-1 ... MoreThis a quite inexpensive lens. Obviously, because the F/stops are 4.5 - 6.3, this lens will not work well for imaging dim subjects, but in bright light or for imaging stars/planets it should serve you well. For more precise or specialized needs, I have better-quality zoom lenses or prime lenses I would turn to. For commonplace shooting, I think you will be pleased with this lens What I am not fond of: the white rubbery rear lens "cap" does not feel like it will remain attached well for too long. There is no manual aperture, no focus range indicator, and no manual focus mode, so it will only work with cameras that can autofocus this lens. overall, a great lens for those with APS-C/DX sensors and newer cameras who are just getting into photography.
