This was a great buy. Shipped quickly, well packaged, and in mint condition. I use it every week for two or three sports assignments and it's been the backbone of most of my images. It's fast focus, quiet, and sharp. I love it.

A solid telephoto lens

This lens is what you'd expect. The cost justifies it 100%. The build quality is amazing. It is not plasticy like so many of the other Nikkor lenses. The image quality is superb and so are all of the functions, including zooming, focusing and VR. Yes I know the VR2 is out, but this lens is still awesome if you can find one in good condition. It is heavy, but do not let that turn you off from purchasing.

An amazing, low-light parfocal lens; expensive and worth every dime

For video use, for those who need a low-light, parfocal lens (holds focal point throughout zoom range), this baby is a solid choice. I just came off a demanding shoot and it performed beautifully. The lens is razor sharp, with consistent aperture throughout the entire zoom range and no perceptible distortion. This particular model is now out of production (having been replaced by the Mark II) and often only found on eBay. They all seem to sell for about the same price, and appear to hold their value well. It's a bit on the heavy side, and use of a lens support is recommended, but I have no real gripes; it's a solid lens and built like a brick sh*thouse; its heft is indicative of the build quality.

Bokeh only okay, but really sharp!
7 May 2020

Sharp, super durable and totally weather sealed. Bokeh is a little less smooth than I expected, but I am used to prime lenses, not zooms. Overall, its a wonderful lens, I've already started using it for portraits and some landscape work. I think I may one day buy the 80-400 for landscape work instead, but for now this provides the compression and versatility I'm looking for!

I wanted to buy this one so went to the local market but the prices there are fixed and written on stone. Two years back this lens was sold for as low as RS 132,000 as per the Indian retailer itself. I saw this available online for a lower price and being an expensive product I was worried to order online. Nevertheless I was apprehensive regarding buying a used one, I decided to take the risk and plunge in. Happy with the plunge as I got a good well packed product, delivered from EBAY supplier. The product is correctly labelled, with warranty card included. Well packed...built like a tank. Black Matt finish. Works well for sports portraits and wild life. Sharp, negligible light flares. Very good build quality. A MUST HAVE LENS FOR ALL-ROUND PERFORMANCE. The product itself is a fantastic product but much has already been written about it.

Exceptional lens - a must for every shooters bag.
2 May 2012

I previously owned the first version of this lens and have now upgraded to the VR II. This is hands down one of Nikon's greatest lenses of all times. I shoot a lot of low light Marching Band and Color Guard competitions either at night or in a gym situation, so larger aperture and VR II are a must. This is a great portrait lens too. The larger zoom capabilities help compress background and the bokeh from the lens is exceptional. Yes it's pricey - but worth every penny. I have this lens on my camera (for what I shoot) 80% of the time! If you want to take your first step into an professional lens for your NIKON body - this is the place to start.

After decades of serious film photography, I finally entered the digital environment. My film equipment included extensive Nikon and Mamiya RB67 systems. My initial entry into the digital world included a Nikon D90 and this 70-200mm telephoto lens. This lens, combined with a DX-format body, gives me the same capability that I had with my 300mm f/2.8 monster lens in my old film system. It's a big lens, but it handles very well and the vibration reduction performs superbly with slow shutter speeds; tripod is not needed. I've only had one shooting experience with it - candid shots at a large outdoor family gathering. The focus was very fast, the zoom range was excellent, and the bokeh is wonderful. They bought all of my old film equipment and provided excellent suggestions about choices in digital gear.

Still great in 2013

I'd been an editorial/fashion photographer full-time for about three years and am just now transitioning into wedding photography. As a lover of primes, I knew that at some point I would have to augment my existing kit with a fast telephoto.Already having the venerable 14-24mm f2.8 and 24-70mm f2.8, the 70-200mm f2.8 was the remaining missing piece to the coveted "holy trinity." The newer VRII version or the tried and true original VR (often mistakenly called the VRI).After reading and researching reviews and opinions about the two for the better part of a month, the biggest thing that swayed my decision was the focus breathing of the VRII model. I don't have the numbers in front of me now to quote them, and better sources are out there to support this issue, but that plus the price difference of about $900 were what sold me.My refurbed copy has a few very light signs of wear around the mount and the lens collar. Nothing to warrant having to return it for another. Focus is fast and accurate, and I have the 90-day Nikon warranty should anything come up.Other than that, these refurbished 70-200s are getting harder and harder to come by, so if my train of thought resonates at all with you, don't hesitate to grab one while they're around! You won't regret it.

Take a breath, and order this lens.
27 May 2014

I'm a solid intermediate shooter, looking to have photography pay some of the bills in a few years. I've spent the last couple years on a gear embargo to focus on improving my user skills. Feeling I've made progress, I'm selectively improving my gear. This lens was the first big step in that direction. After reviewing a lot of lenses in this focal range, I decide on Nikon and am not regretting it at all. Whild I haven't shot a ton, I know this is a game changer. The autofocus is fast and accurate. The bokeh and depth of field are incredible. Being able to shoot a long lens in moderate to low light is a total trip.Take your time. Save up if you need to. But get the lens.

Unbelievable

I've always been the type of person who believes that you get what you pay for, and let me say that with the Nikon 70-200mm F/2.8 lens, it is absolutely true. I spent about 6 months researching and reading every little piece of information about this particular lens before I spent money on it, and all indications were good. I purchased this lens about 1 month ago, and all I can say is WOW! It has helped my pictures to almost come to life. I plan on purchasing the 14-24mm F/2.8 and 24-70mm F/2.8 lenses also from Nikon which will cover the entire range from wide to long. As in my rating above, the lens is heavy, which really isn't a con when considering how well it is built, the darn thing is like a tank! Very smooth operation in the zooming function, and lighting quick when focusing. Low light shots are very nice with this lens and the ability to use the lens wide open at 2.8 is something that has been very helpful. The only real discrepancy that I would have with this lens is that the hood becomes removed far too easily. Every time I remove it from my bag it comes loose because the release button is easily depressed. I've just gotten used to making sure it is secure when I take it out of the bag, no big deal. I have included some pictures below as examples, and you can view more shots done with this lens at [...]As with many reviews that I have read, if you are considering this lens, and have the money, then by all means do yourself a favor and buy it. Give yourself a few days of use to get used to it, and you will never look back.
