I think the other reviewers are missing the point with build... This is designed to be ultra lightweight, and I am actually very happy with that. It is actually annoying sometimes carrying around very heavy lenses: when you put an f/1.4 lens on your camera you can more than double the added weight to your camera body, and that can be annoying. Also. ultrawide lenses have very complex and expensive to make optical designs (this one also with aspherical and ED elements and nano crystal coatings), and this is exactly why it is expensive. If it were metal construction, you'd see the price sail over £1000 or thereabouts, I'm sure. Another thing: metal lenses will not guarantee your lens survives if dropped: I have smashed plenty in the past: it is still a tube full of ... Another thing: metal lenses will not guarantee your lens survives if dropped: I have smashed plenty in the past: it is still a tube full of glass at the end of the day. If anything, the plastics allow the lens to flex (e.g if dropped onto carpet). As for this lens, it is a modern Nikon masterpiece in my opinion and blows away its D series predecessor by a considerable margin: super sharp at ALL apertures, bokeh is lovely at f/1.8 (though you have to get ultra close to your subject), it focuses down to 20 cm from the focal plane which is simply astonishing (i.e. Right into the attached lens hood), coma correction is superb (from around f/2.2 pretty much all gone, so a great astro widefield lens), no chromatic aberrations that will really bother you at all, and distortion correction is top drawer also and easy to correct in post. It is contrasty, great colours, and flare control is brilliant too. I would say optimum lens sharpness on an FX camera comes on at around f/4 - f/5.6, which is great. As an extra bonus, from around f/8 - f/11 it generates the most gorgeous sunbursts you could want from a lens. It comfortably outperforms the nikon 14-24 f/2.8 at f/1.8 let alone at f/2.8. The only real complaint I have is the heavy vignettIng of the lens at f/1.8, but I kind of expected that with such a wide lens, does fade away as you stop the lens down, and modern raw convertors will remove that anyway (e.g. lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw). This lens is now my lens of choice for most landscape, astro applications and also street (when I want some whacky/ creative perspectives) and architecturally it is great too. I think, for what it is and how it performs, it is a bargain. The 77mm filter size is a bonus too (which compliments most of my lens filter thread sizes, though I do not recommend you try a circular polariser this wide as you will get patchy skies). As for weather sealing, it has a lens mount gasket, and I haven't had any issues with it out in the rain yet. My Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art lens isn't weather sealed at all, yet that is the finest AF lens I have ever used and doesn't cause any reason for alarm (Canon users have to do without weather sealing on many of their lenses!)

I have had this lens for about a month now and have had the opportunity to take quite a few photos with it. As advertised this lens is super sharp from center to the edges. I'm using it on my D850 and love that I can easily add ND or polarizing filters quickly without carrying a lot of extra gear (like you might have too with the Nikon 14 to 24mm). It's a light lens but feels well built and balances nicely on the camera. As I will be sticking with my D850 for the foreseeable future (and not migrating to mirrorless) this lens fits in nicely to my current assortment of lenses. This is not the lens that will stay on my camera most of the time, but when I need that ultra-wide angle of view its nice to know this lens is a top performer and generates very high quality images.

This is an astounding lens. I sold my 16-35mm f/4 for it and Im not regretting it for a minute. Its better in pretty much every regard (apart from the obvious lack of zoom). It hits all the marks, including some aspects that are not always covered in reviews, but are important to me for landscape work:- Great sunstar rendering, especially at f/13 (see first image)- Resistant to flare and ghosting, meaning good colors and contrast even in challenging situations- Good rendering of light sources at night with little coma, even wide open (see second image, shot at f/2.0)- Close minimal focal distance, opening up possibilities for some cool wide-angle macro shots- Better bokeh rendering than most other lenses of this class (for when you take those wide-angle ... My only other complaint would be that it has no VR for when you dont have a tripod at hand, but Im happy to give up on VR for better sharpness and lighter weight. Also, if you really need it, you can now put this on a Z6/Z7 and get stabilization anyway. If youre thinking about it, just go ahead and buy this lens. I dont think youll regret it!
I was looking for a replacement for my 17-35mm f/2.8 lens (which still functions properly but is 17 years old so...). I initially purchased Nikon's 16-35mm f/4 lens thinking the 1 stop loss wouldn't make that much of a difference. Wow-was I ever wrong! The VR wasn't very effective and definitely did NOT make up for the lost stop. After shooting with f/2.8 lenses for so long, f/4 is really dim in low light situations. The corner focus (or lack thereof) and coma were absolutely awful. After much testing I couldn't get side to side sharpness until I stopped down to f/10. Maybe I just got a bad copy but I decided to return that lens (Thank You B+H for the easy return process!) and immediately ordered the 20mm f/1.8 prime. Ahhh...If you could see the smile on my face. ... MoreI was looking for a replacement for my 17-35mm f/2.8 lens (which still functions properly but is 17 years old so...). This is a beautiful lens! I waited to leave a review until after I put the lens through it's paces on several different work sites. It's bright. The color rendition is awesome. The focus is spot on. It's light weight. And I don't even miss the zoom range (I just step in closer or away a little when I need to). I'd all but forgotten how amazing prime lenses are. Don't hesitate to buy this beauty-it's definitely worth it.
This review cannot do any better on technical issues than those that came before on this site. Images are crisp and the lens doesn't disappoint. It offers abundant conformance quality.I guess my strong offer of an opinion is to order one from B&H. Yes, the price is good, but the execution of the order is compelling. I live in a remote area for delivery, but they get an order going so fast that it arrives sooner than any other company that i use for consumer stuff. Super fast, and everything just as it should be. Not my first one from here, and I'll be back.
I was looking for a fast, light weight wide angle for Milky Way photography. I currently have a Sigma Art 14-24mm 2.8 and Sigma Art 14mm 1.8, both great lenses, for use on my D 850's but Sigma Arts are heavy. All, ok almost all, the B&H reviews touted the sharpness of this lens, additionally it's a Nikon prime, so I got one. Initial impression is it's plastic and feels cheap, but I wanted light weight and it is Nikon. First test images seemed soft even stopped down. So now to more testing. Using a tripod and wireless shutter release and the same D 850, shot the Nikon against the Sigma Art 14-24 at 20mm. Both lenses shot at F 2.8 so this should have given a bit of an advantage to the Nikon. Results, the Sigma was sharper across the frame with, to my eye, better color ... Tested using both auto and manual spot focus on close, mid and infinity focus points. Viewed all images in LR on 34 inch calibrated monitor. At all magnifications, Sigma was the clear winner. I am thankful for B&H's return policy as this lens will be going back. I have to believe this lens is an outlier as I cannot believe the lens that I received was similar to those receiving the great reviews for sharpness. Since I still want a light, fast wide angle, I'll try another copy.
I got the lens today, attached it to my D750 and took this picture, all in five minutes! Did minimal post-processing in Light room Classic, mainly to straighten the building and I couldn't be more pleased. The lines look sharp and the colors are vibrant. I have always used my 24 to 120 zoom previously and had heard bout how much better the prime lenses are. I completely agree. It is small and light weight, but a heavy weight in performance in it's class. Will post more pictures as I get to use the lens more, but my initial take on the lens can't be any better.
In the past 8 years I've gone through three, yes, three 17-35mm Nikon lenses. And they're not cheap either. I was so disappointed when my third 17-35mm stopped working a few weeks ago, that I decided to go completely with prime lenses, so I picked up this 20mm lens. I've never had issues with Nikon's prime lenses and this 20mm has all the main reasons why I love them: such as corner to corner sharpness, lightweight and beautiful bokeh at f 1.8---As a news photographer I wish I had the convenience of 17-35, but I'm completely done with blurry edges and malfunctioning zoom functions during assignments.
This lens is an instant hit for me. I bought it to get a normal perspective ultra-wide lens that is a bit faster and much more portable than my big chunky wide f2.8 zooms (good lenses, but a chore to haul around). Im very happy with the 20/1.8Gs performance on my D810. The lens profile data in the camera (if shooting jpeg) or in LR/PS (if shooting raw) do a great job of removing CA and (slight) distortion. At f/1.8 it is soft, as one might expect, though not bad in the middle...the corners at f/1.8 are blurry and have lots of CA that creates lateral smearing after correction...there is noticeable (but correctable) vignetting too. Stopping down a tiny bit to f/2.2 does wonders for vignetting and center sharpness, and helps bring up the quality of edges a bit too. ... MoreThis lens is an instant hit for me. Stopping down a tiny bit to f/2.2 does wonders for vignetting and center sharpness, and helps bring up the quality of edges a bit too. This is probably the widest aperture I would choose to shoot on a high res camera if I were looking for decent sharpness in the center of the frame. The edges are crispy sharp by f/5.6, and the center is immaculate, though it still needs CA correction. f/8 is the optimal sharpness for me on the D810 and CA is pretty much gone (even without correction). Stopping down even more noticeable diffusion sets in (even in the middle of the frame). Probably a D3S or other lower resolution DSLR could do well up to f/11 or more before diffusion creeps in. Color and contrast are good at almost all apertures, it is a joy to work with the files in post. Some other people have complained that it feels cheap and plastic, but the price is quite low for the optical quality, and I was specifically looking for a super light travel lens (ruling out heavy metal beasts made by competitors). This is one of those brilliant products by Nikon, while keeping costs down, they focused on optical quality, and succeeded.
