After Almost 14 Months My Nikon 800mm f/6.3 Finally Arrived

I ordered from B&H Photo on the afternoon of April 6, 2022 (opening day for orders) and my lens finally arrived May 26, 2023. It is as advertised. Surprisingly light weight and well-balanced. So easy and comfortable to carry by the Nikon OEM foot that I decided not to replace it with a new AS compatible foot, at least for now. B&H recommended an inexpensive Oben 1.5 inch AS compatible flat plate to attach to the bottom of the Nikon foot, allowing the Nikon foot to connect to my Wimberley MH-100 Mono Gimbel, which clamps to my mono pad with a RRS quick release. Pictures from the lens are sharp, autofocus is fast, and when carefully braced, I was able to get crisp, handheld shots of a stationary object at 1/30 of a second. Very impressive VR! The only slight negative is that shooting in bright sunshine with a background of breaking or flowing water generated surprisingly strong specular highlights. Depending on your preferences, this may not be a negative, but if you don't like them, you will spend some time with the healing tool in Photoshop. If you need an 800mm lens, this lens is an easy choice at a surprisingly good price (hence the nearly 15 month wait)!

This super-telephoto lens pairs perfectly with the Nikon Z9. The lens is tack sharp, and the autofocus works flawlessly with the camera. I shoot a lot of wildlife, mostly birds, a lot of small birds and birds in flight. This lens allows me to get shots that I could not have gotten before. It is also relatively compact and lightweight. I can walk around for hours and use the camera/lens combo handheld. The stabilization in the lens and camera allow me to get sharp photos handheld at shutter speeds as low as 1/250th of a second. This lens is allowing me to take my photography to a whole new level. It's not an inexpensive lens, but it is a bargain given the performance and features.

1 star for Lenscoat and 1 star for B&H customer service expertise. I bought this and I regretted it. The cover covers all the quick lens buttons and the Auto-Manual switches. The video on Lenscoat website is generic and gave me the impression that there are openings on the cover to allow access ( which it does not). Worst still when I contacted B&H customer services, they insisted that I put these covers on and send them a photo. After several emails with comprehensive explanations, the rep didn't reply back anymore. I would expect B&H experts to check their 3rd party products before even selling them. As I am an international customer, I am not sure if it is worth shipping back to B&H.

One word... AMAZING
23 May 2023

Nikon has perfected PF with learnings from 300mm and 500mm lenses.Although I have done a actual side by side comparison with and 800mm f/5.6 by renting one and the 800mm f/5.6 does pull ahead in terms of sharpness and contrast, the difference is not worth 10 THOUSAND DOLLARS. Plus the additional weight of the F mount lens. The PF lens is lightweight, ultra sharp and highly manoeuvrable. I have also purchased a used Nikon HK-24 lens hood and ground down the tabs on the inside very slightly and now I have a carbon fiber hood that fits absolutely perfectly on the lens. The one downside to this lens is the ugly bokeh it produces if you have bright highlights in the background like shimmering water on a lake or ocean.Attached are a few photos taken with this lens.

Perfect with the Z9
24 July 2022

As with the 500mm PF lens this lens needs to be held on ones hands to fully appreciate how light and how well balanced the lens is compared to other super telephoto lenses. The first day I was out photographing small woodpeckers and grosbeaks around my house and moving about and shooting hand held the entire time. I could have done this with the 500mm PF but the image size is 150% larger with the 800mm lens. I could not have managed this with my 600mm f/4E lens and a TC-14 combo that weighs 2.5 lbs more.I added a 140mm long plate to get good balance with the lens and Z9 on a gimbal head. Nikon provides the necessary 1/4 and 3/8 mounting holes for a plate. The CL-L3 lens case is minimal in functionality with barely enough room for the lens with the Z9 mounted and ... MoreAs with the 500mm PF lens this lens needs to be held on ones hands to fully appreciate how light and how well balanced the lens is compared to other super telephoto lenses. The first day I was out photographing small woodpeckers and grosbeaks around my house and moving about and shooting hand held the entire time. The carry case also has the usual single strap defect of other Nikon lens cases. The case is OK for storing the lens but not something I would use for travel with the lens. The best lens case for this lens is the Long Lens case made by Kinesis which provides better protection for lens and camera and can be had with Y shoulder straps and large external pockets for teleconverters, filters, spare battery, and other items.I have the LowePro Trekker 600 AW III large lens carry case which is larger than needed but does work far better in every respect than the Nikon lens case. The best value for an upgrade to the Nikon lens case is the Ruggard Alpine 600 that provide greater utility and more protection than the Nikon CL-L3 lens case.

Sharp, sort of lightweight, slow.

This is a great lens, despite the somewhat mediocre title I gave my review. The lens is definitely light for an 800mm prime lens, although I still have weight issues when placed on my Z9 camera. I have been able to walk around the neighborhood with this lens/camera combo with no problems. Having a strap to support it really helps with fatigue over time. The lens is incredibly sharp, showing feather details not seen even with my 500mm PF lens when photographing birds. For the first time I saw red showing through the feathers on a Mississippi Kite soaring straight above me.The f/6.3 is somewhat limiting but with the Z mirrorless cameras this is less of a problem that with older DSLR's. The case is nicely cushioned and designed with a few external pockets as well.Using it with the 2.0x teleconverter I notice quite a bit of graininess, more than with other lenses. I haven't tried the 1.4x yet but I suspect it will perform better. Most of the time, the 800 range is enough and often too much so that I have to stand further back to get the shot. Dx mode with Z9 camera can give me more apparent magnification as well without sacrificing light gathering capability. In contrast to my initial impression, I will keep this lens.

Superb, but a bit of a beast
21 May 2023

I bought this lens primarily for bird photography and it's proving to be a good choice. It's paired to my Z9 and the focussing is fast, accurate and quiet. You have to plan how you want to carry it especially if out in the field for several hours as it's a hefty combo. I've tried over the shoulder on a mono-pod and also body-sling mounted but you do have to steady it to stop it from rocking as you walk. The supplied bag is an excellent design (it can accommodate the camera attached as well) and also probably the most comfortable way to transport if you don't need quick access. Very pleased with the image quality and the handling and significantly better reach than my outgoing 500mm lens

Tack-Sharp, Hand-holdable Super-Tele from Nikon
15 May 2022

Like many, I have loved the Nikkor 500mm PF lens for the F-mount, and have anticipated this new super-tele for the Z-mount since it was announced as a development lens. The big question was, can this 800mm perform at the level the 500mm has performed with the Phase Fresnel technology?. The answer is YES. Very light for it's size, and much shorter than the 800/5.6 predecessor - you really can handhold this lens. In fact, I prefer that over a gimbal head and have found much better freedom for acquiring and tracking fast moving objects, like birds in flight. Image sharpness is incredible, and the VR when paired with the Z9 allows you to shoot at slow shutter speeds in low light and still get a crisp image. The only consideration is the loss of light - but in good sunlight you have incredible reach options! This is a must-have lens for any wildlife photographer or others that need access beyond where your feet can take you. Planning to use it for some aviation photography shortly... can't wait!

Very nice Lens, but...
27 June 2023

Like most bird photographers, I lust after more reach, less weight, and as low a price as I can get for a high-enough quality supertelephoto lens. So, with this 800mm lens (even with a Z9 being heavier than a D850) offering a full pound less, more reach, and a good (for supertelephoto lenses :-) price, I splurged. Ah, but you pay for those benefits with three other items: #1. this lens does not adjust focus with distance to the bird, especially small erratic ones like swallows, as well as the 500mm f/4 attached (via a 1.4X teleconverter) to my D850; #2 the field of view is narrower; #3 the 800mm does not lock focus on small (as a % of the field of view area) targets as well as the 500mm/TC (effectively a 700mm f/5.6) combo does. The Z9's autofocusing capabilities are superior to the D850 (eye detect and all that wonderful stuff), but that does not compensate for the Z9-800mm combo's lessened ability to catch and hold focus when pushing the edge of the envelope. Swallows go from very difficult subjects to extremely difficult ones, and dragonflies (even more erratic in flight path :-) go from extremely difficult to essentially impossible. Now, maybe younger photographers (I'm 76) have better reflexes, but I'm betting that most of you will find the 800mm more difficult to use than the 500mm/TC combo. You might be better off using the latter with an FTZ converter on your Z8 or Z9. If possible (those 500mm lenses are hard to find, but you may be able to rent one), try both and see what works best for you. Both lenses cost a lot of money ($6500 for the 800mm, $10,800 for the 500mm+TC) and the $4,300 price difference is significant; you should weigh any difference in your keeper rate results with both vs. the extra bucks involved. All that is why I have given this lens 4 stars instead of 5. For the larger and slower-flying birds (herons, gulls, ducks, geese, etc, etc) you will find the 800mm a fantastic lens to use coupled with the Z9 (and Z8 most likely, but I only own a Z9 so direct experience with the Z8).

Why are some buttons simply covered up?
2 December 2022

It's ok, but I don't understand why some buttons have a nice window to see them and use them, and others, like the memory recall button, are simply covered up completely, so you need some 6th sense to guess where they are and press then through the neoprene. If you're not going to leave a cutout, or a window, at least mark on the neoprene where the button is! I don't like spending $100 on something and then feeling like I need to take some scissors to it to fix it.Also, this cover doesn't have a notch to help you line the lens up with the mount when you put it on the camera. Most (all?) or my other Lenscoat covers do. What gives? Again, I had to get the marker pen out and fix this.
