So I had a Nikon 300mm PF ED VR lens which I loved but it got stolen last week in San Francisco in a smash and grab from my expedition along with other stuff. Well I wanted to get another one but heard about the Z 400mm and thought I'll give it a shot. Even though it's bigger and a little heavier it might be ok. So I order it from B&H and had it in a few days. When I received it I carefully unpacked it oh by the way I was at a national park in Florida with many birds around, so wasting no time I connected it to my Z7II and took my first image. I was blown away on how fast it got focus on a flying osprey and then a landing of a Blue Heron. I took a look at them in the view finder and couldn't believe how sharp they were. I also realized that the extra 100mm was a lot and was able to not crop in as much when processing the images in LR. I am very impressed with is lens and do not regret spending the extra money on it rather than just replacing my 300mm but I will in the near future get another 300mm cause it is just that good too!

This is yet another lens by Nikon that proves that ultra-high quality doesn't have to mean huge. This lens is lighter than my 300 f/4 D, and only about 1 pound heavier than my 300mm PF. But sharper than either of them. A significant amount of weight is toward the back of the lens, which means I think it would balance better on a smaller body like the Z7 or rumored Z8 than it does on a Z9. That rearward center of mass means that it might be a bit harder to hold steady than you would expect. Nevertheless, at 1/100th or so, most of my shots are keepers due to it's great VR working with the Z9 stabilization. It's got great AF; fast and nearly silent. Reports are it works great with a 1.4 TC, and once I can actually get my hands on one, I'll certainly find out. Some ... Some minor drawbacks: While I like the quickly removable tripod foot, I'd like it even better if I could remove the whole collar. Also, the focus ring is so touchy that leaving manual focus override active is almost unusable But I'd consider these fairly minor quibbles compared to the overall performance of this lens. It truly is a nearly perfect lens if size/weight are a high priority without sacrificing image quality and performance, and if you don't need the versatility of a zoom.

This super-telephoto lens pairs perfectly with the Nikon Z9. The lens is tack sharp, and the autofocus works flawlessly with the camera. I shoot a lot of wildlife, mostly birds, a lot of small birds and birds in flight. This lens allows me to get shots that I could not have gotten before. It is also relatively compact and lightweight. I can walk around for hours and use the camera/lens combo handheld. The stabilization in the lens and camera allow me to get sharp photos handheld at shutter speeds as low as 1/250th of a second. This lens is allowing me to take my photography to a whole new level. It's not an inexpensive lens, but it is a bargain given the performance and features.

I shoot mostly wildlife, but love photographing landscapes, people and any little insect I find. I was a little apprehensive about how well this lens would work. Mostly because of it not having a faster aperture. My concern was low light performance. My concern is no longer a concern. While not the fastest it is more than acceptable attached to the Z9. My go to lens has been a 600 f4 but I have to tell you, after having this lens for a week and half I am thoroughly impressed. I literally have not used my 600 once since the 400 arrived. A big plus is the weight. So light compared to my other primes. Carrying my camera in the field has just gotten a lot easier. I really do not have anything bad to say about the lens. Even the controls are well placed. Well worth every penny.
The product looks good, however, the fit is so so at best. The wrap for the lens hood is not cut properly. It causes a small "lift" in the material that does not belong. Water catches behind the hood if you are using the lens in weather. The plastic windows for the TC switch are also a joke. Finally, the focus ring is useless with the wrap over it. If you look at the people in videos using the product (Steve Matthies for instance, with the white version) he has removed the wrap on the focus, function, TC switch areas. Too much money to have this many problems.
As with the 500mm PF lens this lens needs to be held on ones hands to fully appreciate how light and how well balanced the lens is compared to other super telephoto lenses. The first day I was out photographing small woodpeckers and grosbeaks around my house and moving about and shooting hand held the entire time. I could have done this with the 500mm PF but the image size is 150% larger with the 800mm lens. I could not have managed this with my 600mm f/4E lens and a TC-14 combo that weighs 2.5 lbs more.I added a 140mm long plate to get good balance with the lens and Z9 on a gimbal head. Nikon provides the necessary 1/4 and 3/8 mounting holes for a plate. The CL-L3 lens case is minimal in functionality with barely enough room for the lens with the Z9 mounted and ... Nikon provides the necessary 1/4 and 3/8 mounting holes for a plate. The CL-L3 lens case is minimal in functionality with barely enough room for the lens with the Z9 mounted and it provides no protection for the camera and risks breaking the lens mount on the camera. The carry case also has the usual single strap defect of other Nikon lens cases. The case is OK for storing the lens but not something I would use for travel with the lens. The best lens case for this lens is the Long Lens case made by Kinesis which provides better protection for lens and camera and can be had with Y shoulder straps and large external pockets for teleconverters, filters, spare battery, and other items.I have the LowePro Trekker 600 AW III large lens carry case which is larger than needed but does work far better in every respect than the Nikon lens case. The best value for an upgrade to the Nikon lens case is the Ruggard Alpine 600 that provide greater utility and more protection than the Nikon CL-L3 lens case.
This is a great lens, despite the somewhat mediocre title I gave my review. The lens is definitely light for an 800mm prime lens, although I still have weight issues when placed on my Z9 camera. I have been able to walk around the neighborhood with this lens/camera combo with no problems. Having a strap to support it really helps with fatigue over time. The lens is incredibly sharp, showing feather details not seen even with my 500mm PF lens when photographing birds. For the first time I saw red showing through the feathers on a Mississippi Kite soaring straight above me.The f/6.3 is somewhat limiting but with the Z mirrorless cameras this is less of a problem that with older DSLR's. I'm shooting with ISO's above 10,000 on occasion and the grain is really not bothersome (software can handle it in post). The carrying case is a must because it won't fit in my Pelican case and is awkward in my backpack. The case is nicely cushioned and designed with a few external pockets as well.Using it with the 2.0x teleconverter I notice quite a bit of graininess, more than with other lenses. I haven't tried the 1.4x yet but I suspect it will perform better. Most of the time, the 800 range is enough and often too much so that I have to stand further back to get the shot. Dx mode with Z9 camera can give me more apparent magnification as well without sacrificing light gathering capability. In contrast to my initial impression, I will keep this lens.
First thing you notice - it's light. It's *very* light - you can easily hand hold for long periods, the balance is perfect. Next thing you notice is that the autofocus is dead silent and fast - and accurate (on a Z9 at least) even when wide open. Images snap into focus without motor noise, and seem to be spot on. Bokeh is smooth. Did a decent job shooting on water with sun directly overhead (better than other glass) - nothing weird, just the inevitable 'flatness'. IQ even with the TC seems excellent, physically though the TC toggle is a slight stretch - I'm sure I'll get used to it, eventually. Until then, I determine if I'm in 400/560mm by looking at the aperture in the EVF (assuming you're shooting wide open). New lens cover is an improvement (faint praise, since ... Until then, I determine if I'm in 400/560mm by looking at the aperture in the EVF (assuming you're shooting wide open). New lens cover is an improvement (faint praise, since I immediately replaced other Nikon long glass lens covers as useless) - although I'm not sure how effective it will be for dust (loose). New lens shade seems okay - although for the cost doesn't appear to be carbon fiber, but still light. Durability may be an issue. Usual complaint - no Arca-Swiss foot - and Nikon has gone to a new mounting screw alignment so existing RRS and others after market replacement feet will not work - you need the dreaded 2 screw to Arca-Swiss plate adapter. New travel case seems okay - it'll look good on the shelf with all the rest, I'm sure... Overall, a very expensive lens, but if weight, IQ, accurate, fast, and silent autofocus, and a 400 f/2.8 and a 560 f/4 in the same lens are important, you won't go wrong with this piece of glass. Looking forward to comparing the IQ with the eventual 600 f/4 - but it may be too late by then - the flexibility of also having a 400mm lens at the same time will be hard to beat, even if you gain an extra 40mm.
Like many, I have loved the Nikkor 500mm PF lens for the F-mount, and have anticipated this new super-tele for the Z-mount since it was announced as a development lens. The big question was, can this 800mm perform at the level the 500mm has performed with the Phase Fresnel technology?. The answer is YES. Very light for it's size, and much shorter than the 800/5.6 predecessor - you really can handhold this lens. In fact, I prefer that over a gimbal head and have found much better freedom for acquiring and tracking fast moving objects, like birds in flight. Image sharpness is incredible, and the VR when paired with the Z9 allows you to shoot at slow shutter speeds in low light and still get a crisp image. The only consideration is the loss of light - but in good sunlight you have incredible reach options! This is a must-have lens for any wildlife photographer or others that need access beyond where your feet can take you. Planning to use it for some aviation photography shortly... can't wait!
Since I received my Nikon Z9 (my first mirrorless camera) in Jan, 2022, I have been looking to buy my first lens designed for a mirrorless Nikon camera. I first tried the 100-400mm but since I mostly shoot wildlife, I used that lens with the Z 1.4TC and did not find the combo as sharp as my 500mm f/5.6 and did not have a second mirrorless camera to use it on any close-up wildlife I would stumble across. Since I am still waiting to receive my copy of the 800mm f/6.3, I decided to try the 400mm f/4.5.When I compared the 400mm plus the Z 1.4TC with the 500mm PF, it appeared as sharp as the latter (though slightly heavier than the 500mm PF plus adapter). I am still awaiting a 2.0 Z TC to try that on the 400mm lens.So for those who already have a 500mm PF lens (which works great on the Nikon mirrorless cameras even with a TC), it is a close call of whether to get the Z 400mm. For those who have the mirrorless system and don't have a long lens, the Z 400mm is great!A few pics are shown below which highlight some of the advantages of the Z 400mm lens (more on my Flickr site):
