The bokeh and blur makes the images pop up so well ...and the sharpness and rendering is extremely pleasing. In fact the pics look better than the reality. I am hobbyist and was worrying about the weight, but this isn't as heavy as I expected and feels good in the hands. It does appear much bigger with lens hood attached. Will be my primary lens for family portraits unless I am traveling long distance where 24-70 2.8S would serve the purpose.

I have not taken many pictures with the 85mm yet; but the ones I have taken are the best of any lens I have owned. The images straight out of the camera did not require any editing. I was astonished! The reason I did not give it 5 stars is the size and weight of the lens. I did my own sharpness test and my lens was sharp at f1.2.

It is a bokeh beast! The lens is large, and i feel i can hide behind it, or my Z7ii body can. It's super quiet and fast and focus is sharp all around! Low light situations? No problem! It feels like holding a newborn in your hands. I've shot a wedding with it already and I'm in love with it, along with the other photogs who saw me use use it!

This lens looks great. When I compare this to the Z 50mm f1.2 I can't point out what it is, but this failed to impress me, the 50mm for sure did!At f1.2 when focusing close you only have a tiny bit of area in focus. I found that most of my shots using eye AF incorrectly focused on the eyebrows instead of the pupil. That has nothing to do with the lens. When focusing manually everything came out great. Shooting at f1.8 everything looks super sharp! Although of course if you are getting an f1.2 it is to be able to shoot at f1.2, you can do it with this lens. You just have to be careful when focusing. The lens is heavy, but it feels good.
I love this lens. no issues to pair with Z9 and Z6II. quick and sharp focus. On the flip side its heavy and not use this thru out the wedding day. your shoulder will get hurt. I primarily use it for couples, solo and first dance. Also use for engagement shoots.
While I have not yet had the opportunity to really put this lens through its paces, the few times I have used it shooting images of my 20 month old grandson have not disappointed. I shot wide open on a z9 and the sharpness of the eye I focused on was incredible, with the focus falling off his face beautifully. The bokeh was nothing short of spectacular. The lens was a lot of money, but I do not doubt for a second this will be a most worthwhile investment. I will update my review as I use the lens more.
Optically, this lens is a winner. It's the first and only lens I can shoot wide open and still get sharpness where I want it. I'm using it for portraiture and lowlight photography inside of a church building where the lighting isn't optional for photography and this lens give me flexibility with my shutter spend. Now, as with everything in life, there is no perfection and this lens is no exception. The build quality is a letdown for a piece of equipment of this caliber. It seems to be built with the same material as the Z40mm f2 and that makes it prone to dust and scratches easily. Even the 85mm f1.8G has better build quality. With that being said, it's not the worst build quality and I won't be returning it because the good outweighs the bad in my situation. I'm ... MoreOptically, this lens is a winner. I'm grateful that I won't have to switch to Canon in order to get a 1.2 lens. Yes, I'd recommend this lens 99% for low light and portraiture.
Yes, it's Chunky; yes it larger than any other 85mm f/1.2 lens though not as heavy but it's autofocus is quick and silent; depth of field is extremely shallow yet focusing manually is facilitated by an almost 320-340 degree turn of the focus ring. Images are spectacular with a very cinematic look in both portraiture and general photography when isolation of the subject from its surroundings is paramount. The 85mm's rendering of Nikon's color science is rich and the ability to pull image information from the shadows, because of the light gathering ability of this lens, is phenomenal. Photographing the city at night is a dream with this lens and the Z9, along with the 50mm f/1.2 and the Z7ii. Lastly, bokeh. What can be said, if you're looking for a lens with character and that "je ne sais quoi"; look no further.
This is the lens I have been waiting for as a long time Nikon shooter and launch day/early Z mount mirrorless adopter. This lens is beautifully designed and has a great weight to it, not much more different than the 50mm f1.2. This is truly a premium lens, worthy of the "Superior" badge.I recently had a photo shoot that ran into the night hours. I typically dislike shooting at night. Having to boost ISO or using light that will leave your background completely underexposed if you are not careful. Also having to shoot at slower shutter speeds can become very cumbersome and limiting. With the f/1.2 max aperture of this lens, I was able to use a light wand to illuminate my subjects while preserving the dimly lit environment for context and depth. The bokeh is very dreamy, and before now, my favorite lens for creamy bokeh was from the adapted 105mm f1.4. The improved working distance of 85mm and the faster 1.2 aperture greatly improves my workflow. Stopping down the aperture still yields some very sharp and amazing images, but if you pay this much for a pro level lens with a 1.2 aperture, I assume you may want to shoot at that 1.2 as much as possible. Otherwise the 85mm f1.8 would be more than sufficient.
I really love this Lense. The build quality, the huge element both look great. Now when it comes to Photos. I couldn't be happier. Compared to the 1.8z version(which is also great). This has much better focusing. A lot faster. It has better rendering. You notice it more with backlit situations. it just pops! It also doesn't have the over the top sharpness like sigma lenses which look too digital and fake at times.I highly recommend this lense if you are a professional or semi professional mostly! because of the price. If you aren't making income with your photography, just go with the 1.8 version. This sits perfectly with my 50 1.2z lense.5/5!I was trying t submit an image file of a portrait session I took with hte lense, but wouldn't work, so sorry!
