(827 reviews)

Nikon continues to develop its mirrorless Z system with the new NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S Lens. This fast prime portrait lens (designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras) features an f/1.8 maximum aperture, which offers superior control over depth of field while also making it possible to work under difficult lighting conditions. It has Eye-Detection autofocus, ultra-quiet focus motors, a control ring, and minimized focus breathing. These features make it a suitable lens for portraits, headshots, and videos. The NIKKOR S Lens also has two extra-low dispersion elements for reducing color fringing and chromatic aberrations, enabling better clarity and color rendering in your pictures. Its nine rounded aperture blades give defocused points a consistent and rounded shape, rendering pleasing bokeh. The lens elements have a Nano Crystal Coat and Super Integrated Coating to reduce lens flare and ghosting. The NIKKOR S Lens also has a specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism for better exposure control stability and a dust- and moisture-resistant body. Superior control, efficient operability, and a robust build make the new NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S Lens a must-have for photographers and videographers alike.

Absolutely my Goto lens for any portrait work

This lens was my first mirrorless lens after the kit lens that came with my camera(s). Its incredible, shot with it last week on the Z9 and between eye autofucius and this sharp lens the iris's were in perfect forcus. Autofocus speed in the Z9 is near instantaneous. Unless im looking for a particular effect this is the lens that stays on my camera for portrait work (competition in the bag: 70-200 S, 24-70 S, Sigma 135 f/1.8). Fast and Flawless.

Fabulous Lens

There is nothing I have found, using this lens, which would disappoint me. The pictures it takes are both crisp and clear. I call it my "beauty lens" because it certainly highlights beauty in whatever it captures. If you like taking pictures of people, this is the go-to lens for you. Beautiful bokeh, clear details in the focal plane. Nikon are due to bring out an 85mm f/1.2. This is likely to be much more expensive, heavier and it is arguable that the extra light gathering won't make much difference. If the f1.8 turns out to be the "cheaper alternative" then rest assured that it won't let you down. Best portrait lens I have ever used, faultless.

Great lens! Sharp and excellent images!

Great Lens! Moving from DSLR to a mix of Mirrorless/DSLR and bought this to replace my Nikon 85 1.8D. The 1.8D had been perhaps my sharpest lens on my D800, but this lens on my Z's is an improvement in all areas. Sharpness is outstanding edge to edge and distortion and vignetting are minimal or non existent.I us these 85's for portraits and for photographing art work. Portraits with the Z 85 f/1.8 S are almost too sharp;) For art work it is fantastic!

I have rented from them numerous times and will continue to do so.

Renting from Lensrentals has saved me thousands of dollars! I can try out a lens and either love it or can live without it. I always receive the lens on time or before. Always great customer service and returns are so easy. I have rented for a variety of reasons. Either to try out a lens I think I can't live without, or a venue where I need a lens that I don't have. Don't hesitate to rent from them. They are the best!!!

This is a seriously impressive lens. One of the sharpest I've ever used, possibly THE sharpest, acceptable AF acquisition speed, awesome bokeh, super sharp at 1.8. I would absolutely use this for a professional shoot. Pretty light as well for its size! And the price is super low for the optical performance you're getting, though that seems to be at the cost of having exterior details like embossed lettering and gold trim and stuff that makes it feel more "premium." Though I could see some folks appreciating the "minimalist" design of this one. Aside from that, I love shooting with this lens, it's just so well executed by Nikon. If you have a Z camera, this lens is a must.

Sharp, Fast, Silent, and Fingerprint Magnet

The Nikon NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S is the perfect lens for those close-up portrait shots. I wouldn't necessarily label it as a "Telephoto" lens as it's only 85mm (127.5mm on the Z50) and nowhere near 200mm or even 600mm. However, This lens is sharp, very sharp for an entry-level lens. I call it entry-level as even though this is an "S" series lens, it's not nearly as fast as other NIKKOR glass with 1.4, 1.2, or even .95 apertures. This doesn't mean, though, that the images are any less than crisp as this lens is sharp throughout the aperture range even wide open. Also, gone is the annoying autofocus noise of the old F-mount lenses. These new Z-mount lenses are silent, not quiet, silent. You'd have to be in a truly noiseless environment to hear the autofocus. The only drawback to this lens is the coating they tout on the website. It's supposed to protect against fingerprints but is quite awful. Don't accidentally touch your glass or take it out into the world you will very quickly find fingerprints and or random dots on your glass. So either clean it often, put a filter on it, or try to stay indoors as best as possible. Other than that 10/10.

Superb portrait lens

I've been waiting for this 85 mm portrait lens for my z6 for quite a while and this lens did not disappoint!Sharpness is incredible. Bokeh is buttery smooth. Color & contrast look fantastic. This lens is so much better than my 24-70 f/4 zoom (at 70 mm f/4) (blows it away, understanding that this is not a fair comparison, but due to limited lens options for Z system, this is all I had). Photos just look magical on the 85 1.8.Please refer to other reviews of the 85 1.8 for testing of resolution, distortion, vignetting, other details (e.g. Ephotozine review, Ricci Talks review on YouTube).I use the 85 mm to photograph mainly kids, and I can get shots of their faces, but if you get back far enough you can get more in the frame. I have shot with primes for many years and I am used to "zooming" with my feet. However there is only so much you can step back.I have just ordered the Nikon z 50 1.8 as well for a "wider" field of view than the 85 mm for more of a walk around lens. I have generally favored primes over zooms and I shot with a 35 mm for many years and loved it. I considered the Nikon z 35 mm 1.8, but in most reviews, the sharpness is not as good as the 50 mm 1.8 particularly not until you get to 2.8 (e.g. see reviews at pcmag and photography life, where you can compare their 35 mm review to their review of the 50 1.8). I'd like to shoot at 1.8 when I need to, so stopping down to 2.8 is not ideal. Additionally I had actually rented the 35 1.8 back when I first bought my z6 and I was not impressed with the performance at 1.8. I also considered the 24-70 2.8 (I have the 24-70 4), but for my shooting of subjects that don't stay completely still (e.g. kids), I can get faster shutter speeds / lower ISO, and more shallow depth of field with the 50 1.8, and the cost of the 2.8 zoom is extremely high for a leisure / non professional photographer (4 times the cost of the 50 1. 8).In summary, if you're looking for a portrait lens for the Nikon z system, the 85 mm 1.8 will not disappoint. FYI, I ordered mine at Best Buy and had it shipped to the store which I was very happy with, was in new condition, etc. I have had some issues with lenses from the company named after a river in South America. My other go to company is the one in NY that starts with a B, but I am getting great service at Best Buy so I have been buying lenses at Best Buy.

Terrible design.
17 November 2022

The optics are great but the design is terrible. The focus ring is the length of the lens so it's very difficult to rest the lens in your hand to steady the camera when shooting without bumping the focus. And although the camera allows you to turn off the manual focus ring when in AF mode for some lenses, it doesn't for this one. It's also difficult to attach and remove the lens because most of the lens is the focus ring which spins. Nikon clearly didn't have a photographer try this out while in the design stage.

Terrific Images
13 May 2023

I am (for reference) an amateur. I may have more money than sense, but with a new upgraded camera (from an old Nikon D70 to a new Nikons Z 7ii), I wanted more being the package deal (the 24-70 zoom lens). This is so much better than I expected. It's hard to take a bad photo - at all. The Bokeh is very good, the speed of focus helps me with portraits of family, the ISO and f-stop allow amazing light gathering, as does the sensor. For example, at night, trying to learn how to photograph stars, I could see color in the trees in one screwed up photo I took. It's an adventure and I am so glad I bought it.

WOW! Best 85mm ever!
10 October 2021

I shoot with more than one system, not to mention Zeiss, Canon, Sigma ART and some Sony lenses. On my new Nikon Z7II, this 85mm prime is besting every other 85mm I own or have owned and it's not even going to be their top of the line.AF accuracy and speed is excellent, bokeh is beautiful and sharpness is stellar, surpassing my Sigma 85 ART 1.4. Basically this is exotic level performance, which is why it's priced higher than 1.8 lenses usually are. Though a F1.2 version is likely to be released, few will need anything more than this lens, which is also fairly compact and easy to handle. 100% professional level stuff with zero downsides.
