I'm a little obsessed with 50mm primes, so I have a few of them. If you're just getting started with the Z-series cameras from Nikon, the FTZ adaptor is a great way to make use of your old F-mount lenses, but if you're tempted to try out this new glass you won't be disappointed. The F1.8S is roughly the size of the FTZ adaptor and F1.8G lens combined, so it's a little large, but when paired with the Z6 or Z7 it is nicely balanced. Optically it is a step above. Very little chromatic aberration, very sharp across the f-stop range, but with a very pleasing bokeh. It never leaves my camera. It is weather-sealed too, so you can just use it all of the time. A great lens.

I generally shoot Fujifilm GFX for everything but wildlife and walkaround type photos. I own a Nikon Z9 and a Z7II for wildlife which is my hobby and passion. I have a 24-70 Nikkor Z f/2.8 that I bring with on wildlife excursions as a catchall lens for what isn't covered by my big telephotos. I have been happy with that lens, but I decided to purchase an 85mm f/1.8 for snaps of friends and family and as a very short tele to fill in the 71-99mm range. I played with ta copy of hat lens at a photo store and was blown away by the light weight and genuinely usable image quality for the price. Based on my experience with the 85 - I decided I'd grab this nifty-fifty as well. Whereas the 85 is a very good lens for the price and is a worthwhile pickup for the casual shooter looking for a portrait lens (see my review of that lens) - this 50mm f/1.8 is a no compromises must have. Kudos to Nikon on this one. Truly a bargain and a very impressive piece of kit. I can't imagine a big difference between this and the f/1.2 because this lens yields simply beautiful images from f/1.8 to f/11 (I haven't shot smaller than that). The 1.2 would need to be beyond incredible to justify itself based on this lens. This lens is very light weight and while it is certainly bigger than the F mount 50 it is still innocuous in a camera bag filled with a 100-400, 400 f/4.5 and 600 f/4. I can't say a single thing even slightly bad about it. Seriously - if you own a Nikon Z camera - just buy this.

50mm is my favorite focal length (at least right now), and this is a nearly perfect nifty-fifty. The image quality is astounding on my Z7 II, even compared to my 50mm f/1.8 G lens I've had for the past 11 years, which was no slouch. The sharpness is excellent, nearly no chromatic aberration to speak of, minimal distortion, and beautiful soft bokeh. Auto-focus is very solid, locking right on, and works very well with IBIS. The build quality is great: weather sealed, metallic, and very simple. The only downside of this lens to me is that it's a little bigger than I'd like, but in the end it is very nearly the same size as the G lens with the FTZ adapter, so it's not unreasonable. I'll be honest, I'm far from an expert and for a long time questioned why people spend so much on glass. I write for a motorcycle publication and recently decided to improve my camera system and gear for the various reviews and travel stories I write. I ended up deciding on the Z5 and this lens to do the bulk of my legwork on, and wow - color me impressed! This lens' ability to make it seem as though I know what I'm doing is plainly worth every penny that it costs and perhaps more.An added bonus is that it's durable - something that comes in great handy when your camera and lens are bouncing around on an adventure bike at 80mph across a desert. How do I know you may ask? Well shortly after opening the lens, butter fingers me dropped it on my hardware floors. ... MoreI'll be honest, I'm far from an expert and for a long time questioned why people spend so much on glass. Amazingly sharp prime lens. I've used the older Nikon 50mm 1.8s when I had a D300 and D7200. Those lens were okay , albeit also they were 75mm when on a APS-C sized sensor so they required a bit more spacing between the camera and subject. This is my first time using a 50mm on a full frame Nikon Z6II and I am super happy with the results so far. Used it in CO for astrophotography and it was great. I know 50mm isn't too popular for that field, but I was very happy with the results. The only downside as others have mentioned is that is is a little larger than the average 50mm lens. If you want a little more compact, maybe check out the 40mm f2 lens.
I bought my Z6 as primarily a low- light camera, so this lens was the obvious first choice as the best fast/budget native lens option. I could have used a 50mm 1.8G on FTZ adapter for less $, but why upgrade to the Z system and not take advantage of the superior Z glass? The rave reviews of this lens were accurate; it is really that good. The corner- to- corner sharpness is simply amazing. Where this lens shines is wide open, where it totally smokes the nikon G lenses. Sharpness, resolution and contrast are basically identical at f/1.8 and f/8... meaning that the era of stopping down for maximum image quality is over! This is a dream come true for astro shooters. Stars are tack sharp pinpoints of light at f/1.8, and coma and sagittal astigmatism are nearly imperceptible. This lens stays at f/1.8 pretty much perpetually on my camera. The only two (minor) gripes I have: (1) the little ridges on the focus ring collect dust/lint like crazy. (2) the internal aperture blades flap open and shut audibly every time the camera is either turned on/off and every time it sleeps/wakes up, which is frequently and seems like it would put extra wear and tear on the mechanisms. Otherwise the ergonomics are superb; it's lightweight, fairly compact and feels solid and balanced on the Z6. The focus ring is buttery smooth. If technical image quality matters to you, then the price increase vs. the 50 1.8G is absolutely worth it. If I could afford the Z 20mm 1.8 I would buy it in a heartbeat.
The Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S is one heck of an optic! This lens is bright and super-sharp even when wide-opened. My only complaint is that at 24mm setting, you cannot stack two screw-mount filters without getting a little vignette. I have B+W UV and Heliopan CPL on this lens. They are both slim line and the vignette is still presence. This is just a minor inconvenience because it can be easily fix in post. I do notice that the vignette disappears at 27mm when both the UV and CPL are attached.Attached, are some sample images made using the Z9 with Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S mounted. These images were taken down and dirty for a quick test using natural light. No strobe. No reflectors. No light modifier. All were shot wide opened at f/2.8 on manual mode. I bought this lens in 2019 but put it aside after buying a few zooms as I'm often shooting while traveling and a zoom is convenient. I returned to it recently after reading a review that raved about its performance and have fallen in love with it again. You really can't beat a fast prime for show-stopping photos and I'm a sucker for bokeh which this lens has in spades. It's a low-light, bokeh, super sharp, multi-purpose-angle-of-view monster and I love it.Some folks commented that it's too big/heavy/expensive for a 50mm but, for the performance I think it's worth it. (If that's how you feel though, I'd point you towards the newish 40mm f/2 which I also have and love; it's a fraction of the size/weight/price and has surprisingly great performance.)Some photos for ... MoreI bought this lens in 2019 but put it aside after buying a few zooms as I'm often shooting while traveling and a zoom is convenient. I wanted this lens primarily for landscape and astrophotography. I realized pretty quickly that it is also highly effective for other applications, including interesting portraits and street shots. The sharpness, contrast, and color rendering are all fantastic. The autofocus (paired with the Z7) is excellent even when shooting at dawn or dusk. The build-quality is certainly sufficient, but is not quite as impressive as the image quality. But, it feels solid, lightweight, and has an easy to manipulate focus ring. If you're not familiar, it may take a bit of time to get use to the electronic focus, but after a few days it's no problem at all. This will be my go-to lens for long-exposure landscape and Milky Way shots. So glad I invested in it.
I recently got a Nikon Z6ii and matched it up with this 50mm F1.8 lens. I really can't believe how sharp this combination is, but beyond that, the quality of the images is surreal. I've only had it for a few weeks, but I've been taking various images testing out both camera and lens. I previously had a Nikon D500 and F mount lenses, and there is just no comparison. The images I have gotten so far almost look 3 dimensional. Attached are a few images I've gotten. All are just available light photos mainly taken at a wide open aperature to test the bokeh of the lens. I'm loving it so far.
