I'm a little obsessed with 50mm primes, so I have a few of them. If you're just getting started with the Z-series cameras from Nikon, the FTZ adaptor is a great way to make use of your old F-mount lenses, but if you're tempted to try out this new glass you won't be disappointed.The F1.8S is roughly the size of the FTZ adaptor and F1.8G lens combined, so it's a little large, but when paired with the Z6 or Z7 it is nicely balanced. Optically it is a step above. Very little chromatic aberration, very sharp across the f-stop range, but with a very pleasing bokeh. It never leaves my camera.It is weather-sealed too, so you can just use it all of the time. A great lens.

AT f/1.8 it is very sharp at center. Sharpness drops just a little at the corners. Stopping it down to f/2.8 improve center sharpness. I recently bought this lens to improve my portrait shooting. For the price, this is probably one of the best (full-frame too) lenses that you can buy. I'm sad I didn't buy this sooner. Obviously, you can't use this for everything, but it does work really well. It is a plastic construction, but It does not feel like it is going to break. As sharp as you would expect from a Nikkor lens. I love that it comes with a hood. It's really nice. As you might have read if you were looking into this lens, having a prime does make you consider your composition more which will improve your skills. Now talking about more picky things. I noticed when shooting at f/2.2 or 2.8, this was significantly better and noticeably sharper. I will attach two comparison pictures to this review. The darker of the two is f/2.8 and the lighter is 1.8. So if you are looking for tack sharp photos with still a decent amount of bokeh, I would fully recommend using this lens and shooting at f/2.5 or 2.8. Overall, wonderful value and could not recommend more for anyone shooting anything.

Nikon user for many years but this is only my second lens for the Z mount. The depth of field is astonishing. The lens is relatively compact and light. This lens could theoretically serve as an all purpose, always on glass. It's not insanely pricey and for the price, I don't think you'll find something better in this aperture/focal length combination. There's a reason many people love the nifty fifty and use only this combination. Unless you're doing a specific type of photography and need a telephoto, a macro, or a wide-angle lens, this will do everything you need it to.
Amazingly sharp prime lens. I've used the older Nikon 50mm 1.8s when I had a D300 and D7200. Those lens were okay , albeit also they were 75mm when on a APS-C sized sensor so they required a bit more spacing between the camera and subject. This is my first time using a 50mm on a full frame Nikon Z6II and I am super happy with the results so far. Used it in CO for astrophotography and it was great. I know 50mm isn't too popular for that field, but I was very happy with the results. The only downside as others have mentioned is that is is a little larger than the average 50mm lens. If you want a little more compact, maybe check out the 40mm f2 lens.

I could have used a 50mm 1.8G on FTZ adapter for less $, but why upgrade to the Z system and not take advantage of the superior Z glass? Otherwise the ergonomics are superb; it's lightweight, fairly compact and feels solid and balanced on the Z6. The focus ring is buttery smooth. If technical image quality matters to you, then the price increase vs. the 50 1.8G is absolutely worth it. If I could afford the Z 20mm 1.8 I would buy it in a heartbeat.
I'm a wedding and portrait photographer and needed to upgrade my old 50mm lens for my D610. I just bought the Z6II and figured I might as well start investing in mirrorless lenses too. SO HAPPY I DID. This lens is insanely sharp. To the point where I didn't have a macro one day and needed to do a ring shot and was able to shoot the ring at f2.8 to get it all in focus and then crop the image to make it look like a macro. I could have NEVER done that with my old lens. This one is fast too. I can shoot at 1.8 with no focus issues and the subjects come out nice and crisp. Highly, highly recommend! :)

I am not a videographer but I can imagine how well this lens will perform in such situations. In addition, the focus ring on this lens is made of metal and has a good throw, and is super smooth reminding me of my Voigtlander 58mm 1.4 SL II lens.3. Camera-linked customization: Assuming you will use this lens of Z body (obviously!), the lens makes use of two of the most important features from my perspective - in body image body stabilization (5-axis IBIS) and the ability to customize the focus ring to do other things than manual focus. This is game-changing, to say the least. The lens doesn't have image stabilization (VR - vibration reduction) but impeccably uses Nikon Z's IBIS and it's super important to get steady vibration-free images. (Quick tip - even with IBIS, make sure to keep the shutter speed above 1/50th of the second to get really sharp images.) Secondly, the focus ring customization. You can make the focus ring change the aperture settings or change the shutter speed or (my current setting) change exposure compensation. It makes the process of making images so much more enjoyable and convenient.In summary, two words aptly describe this lens: worth it

I wanted this lens primarily for landscape and astrophotography. I realized pretty quickly that it is also highly effective for other applications, including interesting portraits and street shots. The sharpness, contrast, and color rendering are all fantastic. The autofocus (paired with the Z7) is excellent even when shooting at dawn or dusk. The build-quality is certainly sufficient, but is not quite as impressive as the image quality. But, it feels solid, lightweight, and has an easy to manipulate focus ring. If you're not familiar, it may take a bit of time to get use to the electronic focus, but after a few days it's no problem at all. This will be my go-to lens for long-exposure landscape and Milky Way shots. So glad I invested in it.
