A useful piece of equipment

I used the Nikon Z Teleconverter TC-2x with the Nikkor100-400mm, f/4.5-5.6 VR S lens. This combination allowed me to have an 800mmzoom, when necessary. However, the teleconverter limits the largest aperture tof/9-11. For handheld photography, 1/800s exposure or faster is also necessary. Iobtained good quality, sharp images, in good light conditions. Otherwise, thehigh ISO leads to excessive noise. I believe this is a useful piece of equipment, when used appropriately.

Not entirely what I expected. Instead, it exceeded my expectations. I knew it would step up the f-stop, shooting wide open at f/2.8 would step it up to f/5.6. I expected some loss of quality to the images, less fine when cropping in. That is the norm for teleconverters. I did see that in some images, but not as many as I expected, which surprised me. I included some of the best images that shows details. Since the Nikkor 100-400mm is on backorder, this is a great way to get that extra reach. I suspect I will also use it on that lens too when it arrives. I would recommend it for use with the z9.

Great Option

I got this to extend the reach of my Nikon 70-200mm Z lens on my Z6. Love it. It's sharp throughout - adds very little weight and givesme just enough extra reach that I love it. A bargain for the price. I use it primarily for landscape & animal photography. The lens maintained full communication with the camera. I would definitely buy this again if needed.

Great Reach, But At Some Cost
8 October 2022

A nice teleconverter, for when you need more reach. I paired it with my 100-400mm Z-format Nikon lens and the images are crisp. However, it doesn't auto-focus as fast (same thing happens with the 1.4x teleconverter as well), and the minimum f-stop goes from f5.6 to f11., so you need a fair amount of light to take full advantage of it. For comparison, using the 1.4x teleconverter bumps the minimum f stop to f8, which is a bit more forgiving. However, for those situations where you want to get 800 mm without carrying a big prime lens, it can be a good alternative. I'll probably use the 1.4x most of the time, however.

It is still a teleconverter

After seeing so many stellar reviews and hearing how much better the Z TCs, I thought I would go ahead and buy one. I have the Nikon Z 400mm f/4.5 which, together with the TC-2x, would give me 800mm. So was excited to give it a try. First I did some test shots comparing it with the 500mm PF plus the 1.7tc, an 850mm combo with almost the same f value. On my Z9, the older lens and tc actually looked sharper! And this combo does work okay in the field. However after a couple of weeks with the 400mm plus TC-2x, I do think the performance of the newer combo is better than the older one, grabbing focus faster and more accurately. In fact the eye focus works better with the TC-2x on then without it on. However it is f/9 so if light is low, the focus does struggle. Clearly the 800mm f/6.3 would be better though much more expensive and heavy. So one can use the TC-2x together with the 400mm to get an 800mm lens though one does take some hit in sharpness and clearly in the maximum aperture.

It's Not Your Dad's TC

Purchased this for my 70-200z 2.8. Tested it on the Z7& Z6 and it works flawlessly. Picture quality is very good even at 400mm/5.6. Worked on taking some images of birds on the backyard feeders and captured some nice shots. Focus speed on 70-200mm was a tad slower than without the TC but that's not a huge issue for me. It really wasn't significant anyway. I intend to use it mostly for landscape and occasional wildlife/birding. I do have the super sharp 500mm PF as dedicated wildlife/birding lens. The image quality on the 70-200 combo is a bit creamier, which is fine. I was looking at adding the 100-400z ($2,500!!!) to my collection but this is a nice compromise given the cost. For less than $600 or 1/4 the price, I get to use my 70-200z 2.8 and use it as a lens ... MorePurchased this for my 70-200z 2.8. Tested it on the Z7& Z6 and it works flawlessly. It's still a teleconverter
31 May 2022

I have previously used the TC-2iii with the 70-200 f/2.8E and a 300 f/2.8. It wasn't bad, especially with the 300 prime. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I did not find the Z TC-2 on the 70-200 Z lens significantly better. I found I got the best results stopped down to f/8 and in very good light. I am returning it and will get the Z TC-1.4 instead and maybe look at the TC2 again with a Z prime. It's very well made and the results are good, but I wasn't getting the detail and definition I was looking for and I can't gamble on perfect lighting for results. Technical reviews on-line have confirmed that while good...it's still a teleconverter and no free lunch. I may ultimately get the 100-400 instead.

Quality and performance seem great.
18 July 2022

I haven't done extensive testing, but many online pixel peepers have and they all seem to agree there's no or almost no effect on image quality. My 70-200 is still f/5.6 with this, so that's still quite usable for what I do. You need to pay attention to the big warning diagram on the case they give you with it. Take a moment to think when installing and be sure to not stick the long protruding part into the camera. It's a very obvious thing if you're paying attention at all. It would be a disaster if you were half asleep in the dark and fumbled it in the wrong way. Good bye sensor.

Stunning 2x Converter
14 June 2022

The results are stunning when paired with the Nikkor Z 70-200mm f2.8! I really did not want to use a teleconverter but I got tired of lugging around my wife's old 200-500mm with the FTZ Adaptor on my Z7. So, I bought the TC-2x teleconverter to pair with my 70-200mm just prior to my trip to Wyoming. Images are crisp with sharp eyes and feather details on birds photographed during my first day shooting with the TC-2x. Focuses a little slower than the 70-200mm without the teleconverter but very usable and noticeably faster and more accurate than the Nikkor 200-500mm f5.6 lens that I left at home. It was a great purchase decision.

Wicked sharp.
23 June 2022

Tried it a few times with my new Z 100-400 and noticed no degradation of the photo sharpness. I usually photo birds from home and like a little more depth of field, so I shoot mostly at F8. With the 2x teleconverter, the f stop goes from F9 to F11. That's fine for me, but I do have to adjust ISO and shutter speed to compensate. It's a joy beyond the old 2x converter which auto focuses with none of my SLR lenses. The old 2x is waiting for dust to collect before I send it to the recycle bin. My eyes are too old for effective manual focus. So the Z 2x is an exciting change.
