NiSi 95mm True Color ND-VARIO Pro Nano 1-5 Stops Variable ND

$288.00

(231 reviews)

The NiSi True Colour ND-VARIO Pro Nano 1 to 5-Stop Variable ND Filter (95mm) allows for precise exposure adjustments with minimal color distortion. This 95mm filter is engineered to lower exposure while preserving "True Color," ensuring minimal color shift. With a range of 1 to 5 stops and hard stops at both ends, it effectively prevents the "X" effect in your photographs. The ability to smoothly modify exposure guarantees that your images are captured at optimal quality. The filter is made of high-definition optical glass and features NiSi Nano coating that offers anti-reflective properties to reduce flare and ghosting. Also, the filter is water- and oil-resistant to make it easy to clean and shoot in inclement weather. The lens comes with a removable rotating lever for easier operation. The 95mm front filter thread allows an additional filter to be stacked on front of this filter with only a minimal chance of vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. It is recommended that this filter is used on 35mm (full-frame equivalent, 28mm for APS-C) or longer focal length lenses.

Really great investment when doing flash photography outside in low shutter speed. I did not want to use hss since the power would be lower that what you set the power to be. Using a light meter also did not help. By having the shutter in a low under 250 and setting my light meter, I am able to quickly correct my lighting and settings in the camera. (When using a light meter while using a filter, set the iso on the meter to how many stop you are going. If iso on camera is 200, then the iso on the meter would be 100 for 1 stop, 50 on 2 stop, etc.)

I used cheaper VNDs before at around $30 - $40 a piece but was never happy with the results. They are usually not sharp, have a lot of color cast, big vignette, and overall not a good quality. I then switched to fixed NDs, higher quality at around $70 a piece. Those are the best, but not much felixibility. I finally bought the NiSi True Color and love it. The first VND that's really good. Almost as good as the fixed NDs but with a lot more flexibility when it comes to filming weddings.

Before I ordered the NiSi ND-Vario, I knew the brand had a good reputation, but when I saw handle on the filter ring, I thought that was a good sign. So was the price. But when I first started using the filter, I was hooked. The filter has hard stops at each end. That makes adjustments much faster. Finally, the color; the most important part. No negative impact on color balance; neutral. This filter can’t be beat.

Excellent NiSi optical quality, but a few quirks
18 June 2022

I bought this variable ND based on online reviews of color fidelity, lack of cross hatching, etc. I haven't tested those features extensive, but so far, so good.I gave it 4 stars because I could not get the post to screw into the hole. It doesn't appear that either thread is damaged, but it just won't catch. Personally, I don't actually care about it that much. Also, I didn't notice that the specs say the front filter thread is 86mm for the 82mm size. I presume NiSi did this because the filter is a little thick and this minimizes vignetting. They include a nice cap for this reason and it even has a notch for the post (apparently added after early reviewers said they cut their own in the cap!). Just something to not overlook. Good Color Bad Flares
20 June 2024

I thought the color in the photos I took with this filter was fine, and I enjoyed the convenience of not having to switch filters to change the light level, but almost anytime I tried to film a sunset at the ocean I got a big visible halo around the sun and occasionally a large dark area in the frame. Unfortunately, I was outside of the time to return it by a couple days. I contacted Nisi support and they told me this is normal behavior around a light source. They tried to convince me the huge dark area that appeared in some of the photos was just dust on my sensor....it's not dust. I don't have this sort of problem with my fixed ND filters, where flaring looks more normal if it happens. I am now afraid I'll ruin a good photo shoot and not realize it until later. Great but not 100%
16 April 2024

Well colours aren't bad. Million times better than Tiffen. But the build feels cheap and light. The little handle ends up on the wrong side of the camera and is slippery and not great to use without that. Comes with a big case that's way oversized and takes up too much space for such a small filter.

Great- with a flaw
22 March 2024

This filter has been great for me overall. I use it on my Canon rf 28-70 without issues. One thing to note, is that if you are at 5 stops, and your camera is mounted vertically, it seems you get strange lines appearing in the sky. Almost as if there's a strange polarizing(?) effect going on.Not detrimental but worth noting. See the attached photo to see the banding effect.

Horrible Red Cast
29 May 2024

I have 3 of these filters, and they all throw a horrible reddish cast on the image (especially noticable in the shadows) when these are set to Max ND (5 stops). I never had this with my previous polar pro. Anyone know what I can do about this? It is near impossible to color grade it out - since it compromises the true color so much...

No color cast - Clean cut. No HSS at last!
14 December 2023

It does the job, what I say. No color cast to speak of. High quality glass. simple and easy to change settings. Perfect way to avoid HSS and wasting power, since I was able to drop shutter speed to 1/60 at wide open of 2.8F and still use flash. (on and off camera). This will also be perfect for anyone who is planning on getting the Sony 9III since the lowest ISO is 500, SUX!, this filter should allow you to drop the perceived ISO value to 100.

Seamless Experience
16 July 2024

Currently bouncing around Europe where it is hot, hot, hot and the sun is bright, especially in the city streets. I am shooting with a Canon R5C with (primarily) RF 24-70 2.8 lens. I really appreciate shooting video with (of course) locked in shutter at a desired aperture, while managing exposure easily with the adjustment of this variable ND. I’ve removed the protruding filter pin/arm and the filter adjustments, on the run, remain seamless. Can shoot fairly wide open with this guy. Also handy for stills in bright landscape. As a bonus, it serves as a nice lens cap, albeit a bit expensive!
