I bought this receiver because I needed a new one to pair with my 4K TV (75" Samsung Q80T). After hemming and hawing for too long, there weren't many options to choose from unless I wanted to spend $2000+, but I'm happy with this purchase.Installation and set-up was easy, but make sure you go through the menus and verify that things are set right. Well, it's actually great for my situation because I can run my PS5 through one port and into the one (and only) 120Hz port on the TV (HDMI 4), and then use the other receiver HDMI Out for the e-ARC to/from the TV (HDMI 3). If you are going to use both HDMI Outs, make sure you have the receiver settings for that correct or your devices will act...weird.

So I just picked this up today. I went to a BestBuy in one town and saw the model last night, while they did not have it in stock, they did have a model on display. I went to another BestBuy today and picked it up. The display model had the four sound posts and alligator clips as shown in the photo. However, the receiver I purchased had all sound posts with no alligator clips. I am not sure why the demo had one connection and the one I got had another. The box showed sound posts, so, if that is important to you, look for that.Setup was easy, sound is excellent. I have only had this a matter of hours, so I cannot comment on longevity, but I cannot imagine having long term problems. I would definitely recommend this product.

One of the main reason I picked this up was for the 4K @ 120Hz, VRR and HDR and doesn't disappoint! So previous reviews stating it doesn't support certain functions must have been resolved in firmware updates! I was pleasantly surprised that it continues to pass-through when I use my headset and keep the receiver off.Sound quality is actually pretty good and much improved from my old Yamaha. My only extra little wish was if there was a little more wattage but I already knew that from the specs...I would actually give this 4.5 stars but no half-star option

Negative 5 stars.Easily the worst purchase you could ever make. The company won't support its products.This won't stay on the input selected. In fact, it suddenly now changes to Chromecast when I turn down the volume. When I reselect the cable/satellite, the screen is green. I have to reboot everything and start over. I am tired of resetting this stupid thing to factory settings and going through setup once a month. I hate that they have my money. This is less than a year old, and I want to throw it in front of a bus.Don't buy Onkyo.Best Buy was no help either.

That's nice, but even nicer is it does not introduce a processing delay in the audio. I was vexed by my Integra and previous receivers. They would add a few hundred milliseconds in the audio path if you applied the 'All-Speaker' audio setting. The only way to prevent this was to limit the Sonos audio to stereo, in the room where you had installed rear and ceiling speakers! The delay would cause a horrible echo when you walked into another room where a different Sonos was also playing. I had to use a 6 channel pre-amp to fool the Integra, but it is not necessary on this unit.ConsThose spring clip speaker connections are really second rate.Not a great AccuEQ. This room-sound calibration system comes in different recipes. This was a one-location low-end solution. I was used to placing the supplied microphone in different locations during the setup process, to equalize the sound settings to accommodate more than one person seated in the family room.Noticeably lost is your ability to review the settings it arrives at as well. You cannot review the equalizer settings it has applied.Sonos music sounded pretty good, but the amplifier sound playing a movie felt 'cold'. OK, not great English, but the sound was definitely off-par. I tried recalibrating, but in the end, the immersive sound delight I was pursuing simply felt 'not there'.I ended up returning it and managed to purchase a reconditioned Onkyo TX-RZ840 directly from the Onkyo website. It is sweet, and well worth the extra dollars.

In my home, I have two outside speakers that are wired into this receiver as all the wires come to one spot in my home. I wanted the ability to be able to be playing content inside as well as content outside. In trying to turn the outside speakers louder, the only way that this could be done is if I also turned the inside speakers louder as well. It can also be done if I switch the receiver to only play sound on the outside speakers. Because this receiver doesn't have true multiple zones for the speakers, this is not possible. Problem is there is no sound coming from the receiver. This happens every time. I'd have to unplug the receiver, count to five and plug in back in and then it will work. This became a real hassle after awhile, so I decided to disable the CEC function on the TV and receiver to turn everything on manually. That did not resolve the issue. Same problem. I'd have to unplug and plug it back in to work. I did a firmware update to no avail. This is unacceptable to pay this much money for a product that does not work properly. GREAT receiver!! This is the third Onkyo receiver I’ve owned and it’s outstanding. Upgrading from a 12 year old Onkyo (still works great just older hdmi that won’t support 4k). It’s powering a 5.1 system and even at only 80 watts/channel it’s loud and clear. Calibration and room correction are a good starting point but you will need to tweak the settings to taste (calibration set my fronts to a 40hz crossover even though I have a sub) Updates are easy with wifi. NOTE: Old reviews talk to spring clips for speaker connections however this model has been updated to binding posts. Additionally, this model does not support HDR10+ only supports HDR and Dolby Vision. IMO not a game changer unless you want to spend another $100 for the NR6100

First unit out of the box mutes volume as soon as you change it. It doesn’t matter if it’s on ARC, its own remote, or you turn the knob by hand. Then count 1001 1002 and volume comes back. You never have a clue how much you raised or lowered it. A disaster. I reset the unit, tried various inputs, same deal. On screen display also missing. OK bad unit. Go back and get another since my job was 150 miles away. Figured I would then return the bad one. Second one, has on screen display but on volume, same deal. I’ve a friend also in the business whom I contacted who has used the 6100, and didn’t have issues. Do all 5100’s have this issue? Can’t tell you. I wasn’t going to risk a third. Mainly we go to this unit for its sonos ready capability. I went back to a Sony instead. They also have the feature in the ES line.
My HK died suddenly and sadly HK doesn't make receivers anymore. So in the market for new theatre system I was going to go with pioneer but the onkyo's were on sale. Watched my first movie John Wick 3 and all I can say is wow! I don't need to go to a theater anymore. It sounds just the same. My Harmon Kardon was a great machine but stacked to this thing was underpowered. The HK was 60 watts per channel this one is 165 watts per channel. Not sure if thats the difference but my subs sound more concussive and gut wrenching and the highs are glass shatteringly powerful. Mid Ranges are better too. All the while it isn't painful to the ear at loud volume, the clarity is incredible. Setup was very easy and surround calibration brilliant and accurate.
