Affordable receiver

I had some trouble getting the setup right so I called the support number. I could not have had a better person to talk with. The support person was from the USA and spoke native English. He had an in-depth knowledge of the product and the technology behind the product. I called again the next day and the second support was just like the first. I could not have been happier! The product works well. Their support is top-notch!

My old Pioneer A/V receiver went out on me and since I have an Onkyo phono/CD amp, I decided to get this one. It's a good product although it only powers at 80 watts per channel. That's enough for my small house. I didn't pay enough attention to the subwoofer hookup and ended up buying another subwoofer so I could have one that worked with the receiver. The unit also handles my Blu Ray player quite well. This unit is also for 4K, but I don't have a 4K TV. The speaker setup was pretty straight ahead and seems to have worked well. Good sound balance. That said, this receiver is a good value for the money and all of them cost nowadays.

Great Equipment!
24 June 2023

I don’t really know much about surroundsound. But when we bought a new TV, it was clear that we had to upgrade our 25+ year old receiver, as it was not working with any of the new TVs. We have the older version of this at our other house and it had been a fantastic piece of equipment so we decided to upgrade to the new one for our new house. It was super easy to set up with our new TV and I really love that you can actually connect it to the HDMI arc and set it up using the TV display. Connecting it to our hardwired Bose surround sound speakers was incredibly easy, and the audio quality that this transmits is perfect. We have it connected via optical cable and it works great! The only issue that we have with this is, the TV does not sync with the remote. So, we ... MoreI don’t really know much about surroundsound. I think it’s more the TVs problem than the receiver but I do wish that they would work together like our old system did.

Great Value, lots of power, easy to setup
20 January 2022

I bought this unit to replace sn older yamaha unit. I have always trusted Onkyo to be reliable and capable, check on both points. Brought my speakers back to life. Tremendous power. Easy to setup, incl the room setup mic. The hdmi switching works fast. No complaints. Very satisfied. Honestly, just a great value. Get this over competitor models like Sony, Pioneer and Yamaha.

It works okay. That's the best I can say about it.
12 February 2021

I've had this unit for about a week and I would absolutely return it if that were a possibility. It works okay, but nothing is really any good. Everything this receiver does, it does just... okay. For example, the built-in EQ is poor and requires a lot of tweaking. It always throws a wild number for one or two speakers, reporting that it's 20-some feet away while the rest are around 12.There's no advanced or customizable EQ if you want to adjust bass or treble on a specific speaker. You can set the crossover of sets (front, center, rear, heights, etc.), which is fine, but basic. The on-screen setup was pretty simple - choose your layout, define speaker impedance levels, and off you go. It's not fancy, but it does work well enough. The manual and documentation ... MoreI've had this unit for about a week and I would absolutely return it if that were a possibility. It's not fancy, but it does work well enough. The manual and documentation is pretty poor. For example, the receiver has a bunch of playback modes like "TV Logic" that aren't well-explained unless you look them up on Google. The receiver also does NOT support variable refresh rate or pass a "game mode" signal. If you're planning on playing Xbox One X or Xbox Series X and have a VRR-compatible display then I would ABSOLUTELY AVOID this unit - don't make the same mistake I have. Had I known this upfront I never would have picked it up, but now that I've installed it and my kids have unfortunately trashed the box, I'm just stuck with it and have to bypass the receiver to get the features when playing Xbox, rendering it complexly useless. Money well spent.CEC works fine - it turns on and off with the TV and displays the volume on-screen, albeit in a very cheap-looking way, with a white--on-black text with no aliasing. Otherwise, no issues with CEC.The volume can't be displayed in dB, only in a 0-100 scale, so there's no way of knowing what "60" really means or if you're pushing your speakers too much. There's no network integration, so no OTA updates. You'll have to use a USB stick. That also means no easy Spotify playback directly from the receiver. It has Bluetooth, so... that's something. I guess? I don't think I'll ever use it - everything I'd want to stream would be better done through the connected inputs, rather than via Bluetooth. The remote is spongy and just plain IR which is fine, but cheap feeling. It requires solid line of sight to work correctly and often misses inputs.Visually, it's pretty bland. It looks like a generic receiver. The dot matrix display is cheap looking and requires you to toggle between displays to get basic information about in and outputs.Otherwise, it's... fine. It's not fancy, it's not particularly good or something I'd show off but it was cheap and Atmos-capable. That's pretty much the only thing it has going for it. All in all, I regret my purchase. For about a few bucks more, you can get a decent Yamaha that has much better features and quality.

Onkyo AV receiver TXSR494
23 February 2023

My 11 year old Onkyo cinema amp gave up on the sound, so decided to invest in a newer model. The old amp was purchased from RS, and because I had purchased TV’s from the Nottingham branch, along with my Dad, I decided to go back. I dealt with Rob who replied very quickly via e mail and swiftly placed an order. The amp was delivered the next day and was a good buy. A previous purchase of a tv failed and was replaced under a no fuss guarantee, so this gave me the confidence to return and hand over my hard earned cash. I can recommend RS.

Excellent entry level receiver with Dolby Atmos. Works great with 5.1.2 setup with no issues. Only confusing thing is the firmware update. Onkyo website shows that there is a newer version available but the update didn't install so ended up calling Onkyo support and they confirmed that this is mistake on their website and my receiver already has the latest firmware.

OnkyoTXSR494 paired with OnkyoSKSHT588
31 January 2023

Please note that this receiver deserves 6 stars in terms of capabilities, performance and price. But three stars so far because the unit makes constant loud humming noise and really loud clicking noises when switched between different modes. This is my very first av receiver and I'm not sure if this is a normal occurrence or the unit is faulty. Went through troubleshooting but makes no difference.

Top piece of kit!
7 January 2023

Absolute amazing entry level piece of kit to get into the world of Dolby Atmos. Was so easy to set up and sounds out of this world. Since we've had this system we've been re watching old movies and hearing sounds and dialog we wouldn't have heard before! We purchased this with the Onkyo SKSHT588 speaker system with built in atmos speakers which just pairs with it perfectly. Ideally suits our small living room but more than capable for larger rooms. More than happy with our purchase, cheers Richer Sounds.
