OXO Soft Handled Can Opener Good Grips

I haven’t had an electric can opener in years. I actually stopped using the one I previously owned after I purchased this OXO Good Grips Sort Handled Can Opener following a power outage. This can opener works better and cuts smoother than any other manual or electric opener I’ve ever used. The grip is comfortable and does not cause hand cramping. The leverage is enough to not need to struggle to propel the gears to penetrate cans. Can edges are left smooth and easy to rinse for recycling. The bottle opener that is concealed near the handle is also very helpful. I purchased this can opener at a local TJ Maxx store for less than $10 almost a decade ago. I love OXO products, but this one has let me down. I simply cannot use it as the angle at which one has to hold the can opener is tricky to find and maintain and I do not like that the lid of the can is just as likely to fall into the can as it is to pop out quite some distance from the can. I purchased this one as it was listed as one of the best can openers to purchase, on some website or other that I trusted, and I dare say some people find it satisfactory. It's well-made, sturdy, and probably reliable for those who aren't as challenged as I. I've ordered the OXO can opener that is held horizontal to the can and gives clean cuts in the hopes that it works as well as my old (very old) Magic Can Opener did for well over a decade. Fingers crossed!

Brilliant!

This replaced a cheaper inferior opener which, although had lasted a few years, had always been awkward to use, and as it became more worn out, it was infuriating to realise that we'd have to have a couple of goes to open some cans. We checked on Which? & these were highly rated. So glad we e eventually got round to buying it & kicked ourselves for not doing it sooner. Excellent kitchen tool at a very reasonable price, very simple to use & comfortable to hold. Also it seems to be well made from quality materials.

Does not do the job

I have purchase a significant number of Good Grips utensils, including vegetable peelers which have all worked extremely well and are a significant improvement on 'ordinary' tools. This is a disaster. The turning knob is so huge it is impossible to use easily by anyone with lady-sized hands. Likewise, when the two prongs can finally be closed after substantial effort, they are equally difficult to grip. However, what is most disappointing is that when trying to use it for the first time to open a tin of tuna, when the cutting wheel eventually locked it would not progress around the rim for more than a turn or two before stopping. The only solution was to release it and start again. Easiest and sturdiest can opener available.

My favourite can opener. Well made, sturdy strong handles and comfortable to hold. It glides really well and works quickly. Is great for Fray Bentos pies too. Good price, lasts for years. It's the best one and easiest to operate for the elderly and those with arthritis, hand injuries etc, as it glides smoothly and isn't stiff.

Easy to use, easy on the hands can opener

I was looking for a sturdy can opener that would not develop rust as others I have owned have done. This one has few exposed metal parts so that should not be a problem. The locking feature means that I don't have to keep gripping it to keep it attached to the can, and the turning knob is large and comfortable to use. Would recommend.

Fails to perform its basic function

I usually find Oxo Good Grips to be a decent brand of inexpensive kitchen tools. This one however is a disaster. It mangled the can edge (bends it out of round) often binds and won’t continue around the can requiring one to pierce the can with opener in tiny increments . Even more useless on a can that isn’t round. It is headed for garbage can as soon as I find one that will actually open a can. I bought this in a Bed Bath and Beyond retail store.

Great Buy

Bought these to replace another M&S can opener that we have had for years and was hardly working.Wanted something with a comfy grip so they wouldn't dig in my hand and a good sized handle. These are perfect.Great value for money as i had shopped around and these were a lot more expensive in other places.Its good to be able to open a can without it getting stuck all the time

Well made and works

For over 20 years we have used a Culinare MagiCan but when it finally gave up the ghost, we bought the new and improved model. What a mistake! Its lighter and doesnt work. We looked round and having bought other oxo products, we decided to try this. This is very substantial, it took a bit of trial and error initially but it really works very well on a wide range of tins, even those with a ring pull which is ideal as quite often the ring pulls come off and in the past we have had difficulty in opening them. Oxo do a couple of designs but this is really good c

Works beautifully

For about 30 years we used a culinare magic can but when it finally gave up the ghost we bought the new improved one. What a mistake. For new and improved read cheap, poorly designed, lightweight and guaranteed not to work.The hunt began for a new can opener and having used other oxo products we thought we would give this one a go. It is nicely made, feels comfortable and works beautifully. It is well worth the slight extra expense as it feels as though it will last a good few years of reliable service.
