I actually prefer this over The DMR-EH55. It's design more closely emulates how the earlier DMR-E80H and DMR-E100H function (which I've owned and still use to this day). It's too bad that the display isn't brighter but I don't use it to tell time anyway.

The Panasonic DMR-EH50 is "Simply The Best" consumer DVR-DVD Burner I have ever used. Though a little confusing at first, after a read through the manual (I know no-one want to use the manual) it is logical in it's design and function. Good quality and robust design means that this is a unit that can be repaired and rebuilt a number of times in it's life. I now have three of these units (2 operational and 1 for parts). The primary failure of these units over time will be capacitor swell which is easily repaired via replacement of the capacitors on the power supply board and the control board (repair instruction available on internet). Two of my units have been brought back to life this way (my third unit would only require a new hard drive to restore it's operations). Since these units are no longer manufactured the repairability is a very important factor when purchasing used units. Although many people are using computers for this function, since over the air analog signals (non-digital cable) are rapidly becoming a thing of the past, as a transfer and quick edit recorder for archival storage these units are great. They record and playback standard DVD's not BlueRay, so another reason they are no longer being manufactured for the North American consumer market.
The DVD Recorder is pretty good, does what it's supposed to, supports a wide verity of video (S-VIDEO, Composite, RGB, RF) and disc formats (DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD RAM), would be nice if it supported DV (FireWire, IEEE 1394). Overall it's a nice device and does what it's supposed to well, make sure when purchasing you get it with a remote as it is useless without one. Would definitely would recommend for archival work especially with DVD-RAM disc as they are very durable.
. This is the 3rd EH-50 I now own. It works great.
Didn't work when I got it
