As for Best Buy: shipping needs to be greatly improved as the box was not double boxed which is needed to protect the original box from being dented, scuffed and most of all to keep anyone from knowing there is a very expensive player inside.

Beware: Do not Update the Faulty Firmware

Having said this, when this player works, it’s bested by no others on the market. Panasonic has released firmware updates to address some of the issues, but if you buy this “Region Free” modded player, DO NOT update it. I found out the hard way that this will nullify the region switching capabilities, making it seem almost as if their region unlock is merely software (and not hardware) in nature. I didn’t open it up to see, but the evidence does seem to indicate that if there is some hardware modification, it was poorly implemented ... MoreAs many with this player (or the 820) know, older iterations of the firmware for this product have had issues with raised black levels, flickering with DV (e.g., with the Ghost in the Shell 4K), and other annoyances with some UHD discs. Truly pitiful. I’ve been a customer for many years, but this modification (and the customer service) was so bad I will not buy from/recommend this site again.

Setup was simple and there's definitely a noticeable difference between this and the $300 LG player I was previously using. I had this player only for one month. I chose it because I needed one with analog out for sound ,4 channels I use preamps and power amps. My oppo 203 has problems with some 4K discs. I like the fact that I can lower the sound volume and still hear the dialogs, oppo lacks this feature. Set up is straightforward although you have to read what you are doing and test what you like. Better colors , plays my cds reasonable well, using RCA outlets no difference compared to Oppo 203 however it doesn’t play my sacds . Panasonic stated that wasn’t enough room for playing sacds. If they would have increased the height this player would not fit between my tv set and my stand. This would be something that I wouldn’t like. I might be subjective because Oppo and Pioneer are out of this business, universal players with analog out channels Panasonic was my only option. It matches my expectations.

Great 4K Player

I own a Panasonic UB820 but I was interested to see why this unit cost 2X as much. As soon as I pulled it out of the box, the differences were obvious. It's rock solid, heavy and built like a tank. Quality internals and separate power supplies for audio and video output. It's THX certified. It has an HDR optimizer, that helps with tone mapping. All of this produces the best picture from a 4K player I've ever seen. I watched these two decks side by side, and while the UB820 produces a great picture, the 9000 is a step up. The colors are more realistic. The sync between lip movement and voices are spot on, but if an adjustment is needed, there is a setting for it. It automatically switch's to Dolby Vision unlike my Sony 800 M2. This was one of the reasons I replaced ... MoreI own a Panasonic UB820 but I was interested to see why this unit cost 2X as much. This was one of the reasons I replaced my Sony. My Blu Ray DVD's look better on this machine which auto up-scales to 4K. It has high grade 32 bit DAC's to give it a full rich sound. There's a quirk...you must go into settings to turn off the digital out to allow the analog audio to play. It's the only way to utilize the DA's. Another take away is that it doesn't play SACD's or DVD-Audio. However, If watching 4K DVD's is your main reason for getting this machine, and you want the best picture, and great sound, this unit delivers

Great sound and picture, issues within a week.

Great picture and sound when it was working. Bought this about a month ago, lost sound on Netflix after using it for 5 days. Next day lost sound on all apps except DVD, and the only way to restore full functionality both times was to unplug it. I ended up returning it the next day and trading it for a different brand that offered the same set up options (separate HDMI for video and audio). I used to own Samsung 4K DVD players and loved their home screens. The homescreen for the UB9000 seemed like something from the 80's, and the fact that it defaults to DVD playback when you turn it on with a disk in the drive was annoying. To watch Prime or YouTube is a 3 step process onless the drive is empty. Also the fact that there was no info displayed when pausing a movie ... MoreGreat picture and sound when it was working. Also the fact that there was no info displayed when pausing a movie about how much is left without pushing another button on the remote was rather disappointing. I did a lot of research before purchasing this DVD player and was set aback about the antique homescreen and basic operation. If any review would have mentioned that, I still would have bought it with different expectations and probably would have exchanged it for the same model after it started acting up instead of returning it. And if it was a few hundred dollars less I would recomend it, but the DVD player I replaced it with was less than half the price, sounds and looks just as good and has been working flawless for three weeks as of now.

Watched this unit for over a year. Darn thing never went on sale anywhere. Even at this price, it sold out a couple of times, though. As it should have. This is the best 4K player available today. CON: LG should stop sitting on its laurels. No excuse why LG has not put out a newer model with 7.1.2 (Dolby Atmos) capability. That’s it for the Cons. PRO: REMOTE. Full size. Rectangular. For the cost of this unit, one would reasonably expect the buttons to be backlit. They are not. The remote has several buttons – Subtitle, Audio, Video Settings, HDR Settings, Sound Effects and High Clarity – not found on LG’s “Magic Remote.” These buttons give you direct access to various menus. FEATURES. Literally, too many to list but includes De Blur, De-judder, Clear, Smooth, Real Cinema, OLED Motion Pro, etc., as well as the usual suspect. There are recommended values for each setting on the Internet. A suggestion. The included “Basic Owner’s Manual” - a tiny 13-half-page pamphlet really - is useful as a fire starter in your fireplace. The actual - read useful - owner’s manual is available here – https://www.panasonic.com/content/dam/pim/au/en/DP/DP-UB9/DP-UB9000GN/DP-UB9000-User-Manual-Australia.pdf. Yeah, Australia??? Right. But, it appears to be for the American market. VIDEO: Own two LG 820s. Picture quality on a 77" LG OLED CX was marginally improved over the 820, noticeably in the Black and Contrast. Test disc and scene is always Atomic Blond 4K at the apartment fight sequence, which has motion, contrast and is dark. Good test sequence. SOUND: Sound is output using the unit’s analog plugs to 2 pre-amps and 6 amps with 4 powered subs (18", two 10" and one 8"). Unit handled it all very well and produced concert-quality sound. THX: THX certified. However, such certification has more to do with the design and materials used in the construction of whatever than with picture or sound quality. The final output must meet THX specifications. It is the mandatory build quality that makes THX certification desirable for the consumer. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION

I've always been a fan of Panasonic since I shopped all over for my first VCR (looking for one that was actually made in Japan) and spent $400! It simply had the best picture quality, as does this 4K player. Operation is smooth and silky and the build quality is top-notch. Ordering and shipping were excellent -- ordering was easy and straight forward and shipping was swift and well doubled boxed to protect this unit. Anyone ordering must understand that this unit is a modified unit; meaning the box is opened, the unit is modified to be region free and then resealed and ready for sale. No problem there, the resealed box contains a sticker affixed that states is "region free" status (other than that, there are no original packaging advertisement that this is a region free unit. There is also documentation placed inside the box with detailed instructions on how to use the region free aspects for each region outside of Region 1 (USA). Out of the box picture quality is amazing with the standard blu-ray that I used for testing. Access to apps such as Netflix and picture and audio quality were excellent. I did however run into an issue with using an 2TB external hard drive in both usb connections (one front and one rear) where the video could be seen but the unit would not recognize the audio format, rendering no sound. I could find no resolution online to this issue and it appears that there are others with this issue. There are lesser blu-ray players that work well to large format hard drives and at this price point, this unit should work as well. Welcome to hear of any solutions to this issue as otherwise, the unit is well built, better DAC and video software, including THX certification, than those lesser units mentioned earlier. If and until I can resolve the issue with large capacity hard drive playback, I'll have to continue redundancy with my lesser blu-ray that can perform the playback. There is also a lack of information in the product manual (Panasonic responsibility) online to research and resolve issues with this unit.

I originally had the Panny 820, but almost immediately upgraded to this top-of-the-line 9000. The 820 was decent, but it began to pixelate a number of discs (even after I cleaned the discs). I have found this 9000 to be superior in every way. It plays everything without issue. It is rock-solid and doesn't have the plastic feel of the 820. The video and audio are also noticably cleaner on my calibrated LG-G2 77" OLED. Yes, it's pricy and twice the price of the 820. However, in all the decades of my purchasing higher-end audio/video equipment, I've come to learn you really do get what you pay for in equipment. I thought the 820 would suffice, but at the end it was the 9000 that hit the sweet spot. If you spent good money on your display device, do yourself a favor and ... MoreI originally had the Panny 820, but almost immediately upgraded to this top-of-the-line 9000. If you spent good money on your display device, do yourself a favor and don't skimp on the player that feeds it.
