Panasonic Lumix G Vario 35-100mm Lens
Thanks to its telescopelike construction, the new LUMIX G Vario 4.05.6/35100mm ASPH. /OIS telephoto zoom remains exceptionally compact when not in use, measuring only 50mm in length, 55.5mm in diameter and weighing only 135g. The handy telephoto zoom with its wide focal length range corresponding to 70200mm (KB) harmonises particularly well with the compact DSLM cameras of the LUMIX GM series, to which it is matched in its silver or black metal design. With its focal length range, the telephoto zoom is suitable for snapshots and portraits as well as for optically bridging larger distances, whether in architectural or nature photography. The optical construction of the LUMIX G Vario 4.05.6/35100mm ASPH. /OIS consists of 12 lenses in 9 groups. It provides a consistently high contrast over the entire image field and a high resolution over the entire zoom range. 2 lenses made of ED glass minimize disturbing color fringes. An aspherical lens guarantees the preservation of the high optical performance with a significant reduction in the size of the entire lens. Multicoated lenses prevent disturbing reflections or ghost images. The stepper motordriven internal focusing in conjunction with the contrast AF system of the LUMIX G models ensures fast and precise focusing for photos and videos. The OIS image stabilizer protects against blurred images even at large image scales in the telephoto and closeup range. 7 aperture blades produce an almost circular aperture and thus a nice soft bokeh in the blurred areas of the subject, especially with larger aperture openings. A robust metal bayonet guarantees a precise and firm connection to all MicroFourThirds cameras.

This tiny zoom lens produces excellent images! For any advanced photographer this should be the lens that is picked as a complement to the Panasonic 14mm micro four thirds lens. The two are wonderful traveling companions. I attach the LUMIX G VARIO 35-100mm f/4.0-5.6 to my Panasonic Lumix GFI. The lens is under five ounces and the combination produces absolutely no strain on my shoulder. Yes, you do have the alternative of the outstanding Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 Lumix G Vario Zoom Len. However, it has a much higher price and weighs much more than the f/4.0-5.6 version. In my opinion, for the advanced, but non-professional photographer, the choice is simple - get the LUMIX G VARIO 35-100mm f/4.0-5.6. You will be happy (and amazed)!!

This is an incredibly compact 70-200mm equivalent zoom as sharp as some prime lenses throughout the entire focal range. It's amazingly sharp wide open, so a boost in ISO or adjusting exposure compensation in darker settings can still produce great shots without a larger max aperture...which would eliminate this lens's minuteness. This zoom is only slightly larger than the Olympus 45mm f1.8 prime when stowed (Also an incredible lens). If you were to match this 35-100 f4-5.6 with the Panasonic 14mm f2.5 pancake, you'd have an incredibly versatile, pocketable combo for daytime. The Pana 14mm f2.5 and the Oly 45mm f1.8 are a great nighttime pair. I use them on an E-M10 mk1.

This lens is the tele companion to the G Vario 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom, which covers the wide/normal ranges. Together they comprise a nice duo of compact, light weight zooms. At this price point this is not a pro-grade optic (nor is it represented as such), but it is quite respectable regardless. A short twist of the zoom ring extends the lens to its operational configuration, which is no big deal since you have to select your desired focal length with this same ring anyway. The supplied tulip lens hood can be reversed for storage on the lens. The accompanying poop sheet indicates that filters can't be used with the hood attached. Not so. The lens' native 46mm size filters fit just fine, although adapting larger filters would, of course, preclude use of the hood. I wish Panasonic would have had the foresight to provide an open slot at the rear of the hood to allow adjustment (rotation) of polarizing filters. My major gripe with this lens is appearance-wise, not performance-wise. Namely, when extended for use, it screams PLASTIC, due to the fact that significant areas of shiny, piano-black plastic are exposed. Not that you would expect a machined metal barrel at this price, but the shiny areas should have been finished in the same matte black as the rest of the lens. Except for that aesthetic faux-pas, though, this is a nice little zoom that lets you travel light, especially when paired with the previously mentioned 12-32mm companion zoom.

First thing let me say I'm using this lens with a strange little camera called the Z-camera E1. I bought it because I wasn't getting aperture, focus or IS communication with the Vello active EF-MFT adapter I was using. I returned the adapter and got this little beauty and it solved all my issues with the exception of IS or MEGA OIS as they call it. For whatever reason, the camera will not utilize the optical stabilization the lens provides. Aside from that, I am pretty impressed with the sharpness, and bokeh the lens produces. AF is a bit on the slow side and it doesn't like to AF on objects closer than 1 meter but it could be the camera. I also noticed when the lens is in AF mode the MF ring is completely disabled which is a little annoying when the AF is ... MoreFirst thing let me say I'm using this lens with a strange little camera called the Z-camera E1. AF is a bit on the slow side and it doesn't like to AF on objects closer than 1 meter but it could be the camera. I also noticed when the lens is in AF mode the MF ring is completely disabled which is a little annoying when the AF is struggling to find focus. Again, these could be flukes related to the camera. This being my first experience with the MFT format, I was surprised how small the lens was, and at first, I thought there was a mistake made. Holding it in your hand makes your hands look like Andre the giant hands. It also has a storage or travel position on the lens which pulls the barrel in tight, I'm assuming to make the lens smaller for travel and storage. It confused me at first because the lens will work but will not focus in this mode. So when you get it and you pop it on, remember you'll need to extend it to the proper focal length prior to use. I'm assuming if you are using a Lumix body most of these are non-issues. The zoom is more like 150mm and it works well for sports video (see image). At f4 the lens produces plenty of good bokeh.
I was very surprised and pleased by the image quality of the tiny 12-32 Lumix lens, which has been one of my favourites since it was introduced. Having several more powerful prime telephoto and telephoto zoom lenses, I was late in looking at this 35-100. When I first handled it, I was struck by its light weight and very small size. I read the test reports and took the plunge, buying a silver model which was on special offer. Having now used it extensively, I am every bit as impressed with it as I am with the 12-32. Admittedly the maximum apertures are modest but that enables the small size and light weight. I fully endorse the ePhotozine review conclusions, especially the comment that this lens delivers quality well beyond that expected at the price. It goes everywhere my GX80s and 12-32 go.
The lens has been used to enhance compositions of landscapes and architectural buildings. So far the lens has been light, compact and easy to use. The images are sharp and show good detail.
5 Stars for what it is...I bought this lens because It's significantly cheaper than the f2.8 version, and Reviewers have stated this lens is actually quite sharp. I could not find a DXOMark Score on this model only the f2.8. When comparing this lens to the 14-42mm that shipped with my G7 (Also purchased from B & H) I was pleasantly surprised at how much sharper it seems to me. I am not qualified to judge this lens on a technical basis, but I can see the images shot side by side with the same G7 Camera and they are clearly sharper. I really like this photo range for walking around, and I shoot mostly outdoors so this works for me. The small size is amazing... and the weight is hardly noticeable. This lens has a nice feel to it in terms of build quality and the auto focusing speed seems crisp when paired with the G7. I also purchased a Sigma 60mm from B & H which is currently on it's way to Sigma due to an internal defect, however this lens and the Sigma appear to my eyes to be about equally sharp at 120mm 35mm Equivalent. The Sigma however is much faster. I like that all my M43 Gear uses that same size filters. This lens also seems to perform pretty well for use in Video. I also decided to go with the Cheaper version, because no matter how much I like 43 I'm just not convinced the quality of the images is quite there yet in comparison to full frame so I'd rather spend the extra money on another lens for a DSLR system I use when I want the very best quality. Many reviews of the F2.8 say it's not that much sharper, just faster. If you love 43 gear and shoot outside and are looking for a very lightweight small lens with extra reach that is very versatile then this is in my view a good choice. B & H Shipping was very fast (I'm on the West Coast) and the product was packaged well.
This lens is unique. There really is nothing else out there that gives you this kind of telephoto reach in such a small package, on a large-sensor camera. It's one of the reasons I use micro four thirds. And the images are excellent. It's not super fast, but I'm generally using it outdoors in daylight so that's no matter. It has a nice rendering of out of focus elements. Colour is great. It's sharp. And it's freakin tiny! Well worth it if you want a small camera kit for hiking or travel.
I'm a prime lens user but I wanted a zoom in this range for convenience, thinking that at this price image quality would be a compromise. I was wrong - this lens is as sharp as my prime lenses. Frankly, I was pretty amazed. Maybe I got an exceptional copy (given some of the lenses I've owned I think I was due for a break). I shoot mostly outdoor, nature, architecture, anything I find interesting, and it's getting used a lot (with Panasonic G9).
First of all this is a budget lens, so comparing it with other budget lenses I wonder who would really want one. If one wanted a long lens, there are longer lenses that cost less: Oly 40-150 f/4-5.6 and the Pana 45-150 f/4-5.6. Both of these lenses will give save you a little money and give you an extra 50mm of focal length, and are sharp enough. If one wanted a decent all-in-one zoom, Tamron offers its 14-150 f/3.5-5.8. The Oly and Pana all-in-one-zooms cost more, but IF on sale would provide a more usable focal length range. So why bother with the Pana 35-100mm f/4-5.6? It has good image quality, but it is NOT competitive with premium lenses. It is NOT fast. It is not particularly long—certainly not what one would want for wildlife photography. It is TINY—it is the smallest telephoto zoom currently available in MFT. It weighs 4.8 ounces and (when fully retracted) just less than 2 inches long! It is virtually identical in size and weight with both Panasonic’s and Olympus’ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 lenses. IF you want the physically smallest telephoto zoom in MTF-land, this is the lens for you.
