Penn Fathom II FTHII40NLD2 The Penn Fathom II LD is a modern compact lever drag boat reel which is light in weight but heavy in performance. The heart of any lever drag reel is the drag itself and Penn have fitted the Fathom II LD with their Dura Drag system. Dura Drag contains a special Phenolic bonding agent that prevents the premature breakdown of the carbon fibre drag material whilst also providing a barrier to water. The result is a smooth and powerful drag which applies controlled pressure throughout the fight with fear of losing the fish through a jerky drag. The drag is set using the pull-to-turn pre-set knob which allows you to alter the drag setting with a quick pull and turn of the adjuster. It them locks in place preventing accidental adjustment of the drag whilst playing a fish. To match the drag the Fathom II LD has a strong full metal body and side-plates, stainless steel main and pinion gears and a double-dog ratchet anti-reverse. I bought two of these at the same time and really like the reel. One did great and the other fell apart the first day out. We lost the crank handle when it fell off because the screw backed out, it would not go into free spool unless you backed the tension all the way out, and the saddle nuts kept backing off until we ended up loosing the saddle. The other reel worked great with no problems. I have not contacted Penn or bass pro to see about exchange it.

This is a very sexy reel indeed. It has so many features and seems to be built so well, I purchased the FTH1160NLD2. The 60 is almost a game reel and probably a bit big for me but the King fish wont have a chance this season. These are my first 2 speed reels and compared to my olsder TLD, there is no comparison. Of course their longevity has not been tested but I am certain they will last forever or at least longer than me.

Just buy it! You won’t be disappointed. Whether your fly lining for tuna or Rock fishing this reel does it all. So smooth and fast retrieve. Fished for 10 hours straight and wasn’t tired at all.

Good reel for the price. I had it out in the gulf 200 ft. Catching 20 lbs plus red snapper. I have it paired with 80lbs spiderwire camo braid and 80 lbs top shot. Had no problems putting the brakes on the snapper. Switch to low gear and pull the groupers away from thier holes. Had plenty to pull them away from the tax man fast and get them in the boat!
I did a lot of research before purchasing this reel and this reel is capable of putting out the performance that top end reels offer but at a reasonable price. The 60 nld has a tall narrow design with a max drag rating of 50lb. Made out of aluminum cast its capable of landing 150 lb+ tuna. Only negatives are the plastic drag Lever and issues with the 60 free spooling when the drag tension is set.
Bought this reel for slow-pitch jigging red snapper and amberjack in the northern GOM. Spooled with 450yds of 30lb braid and works well; very sturdy, nicely finished. I would buy it again.
Super nice reel. This FTHII25NLD2 will be used exclusively for blue fin tuna. I have no doubt that it will be what I'm looking for to jig BFT to 100 pounds. It's loaded with 65 pound ProSpec with the last 400 feet of 60 pound Jerry Brown hollow core alternating colors (orange and yellow).
I am honestly not a fan of Penn fishing reels. I was debating between this real and a Daiwa 50 saltiest star drag that I like. I ended up buying both but putting this real on a tiger ugly stick 130 to 180 pound class jigging Rod. I used the real this weekend and caught nice Amber Jack and very big red snapper on it. I was super impressed by the drag and power. Like I said I am not a huge fan of penn but this real may have opened up the door to me trying more of their reels.
Nice looking reel,does not function as expectedUsed it for the first time and the whole spool bounded up.. cleared all 4 knots throughout the spool. And it did it again and lost the tuna. My friend had the sane reel and he says it happens all the time with the narrow reel , this is a horrible defect. Also on the same trip my friends handle came off while reeling a tuna in. He has had the reel for under a year and its his 3rd trip and for the handle to fall off is redicoulous needs a longer screw. I would jot reccommend this reel.
I bought this three weeks ago and took fishing. Lost three good size pink snapper as the 50lb braid would wind into the gap between the spool and body onto the spool axle and jam. Tried removing line, rewinding flat onto the spool and adjusting drag but problem continued and unable to use reel unless I always remember to use thumb to guide line while winding in fish. Compared with mates reels and they have body design with over hang to prevent line entering gap or a line guide. Penn wouldn’t consider credit toward another reel with line guide.BCF providing free mono line replacement which hopefully won’t fit in gap.
