Pentax 10x30 AP WP Binoculars
The Pentax 10x30 A-Series AP WP Binocular delivers bright clear images without being over sized or cumbersome owing to its anti-reflection fully multicoated 30mm objectives which maximize light transmission to produce the brightest views possible. Utilizing traditional porro prisms produce scenes with a rich depth of view over similarly sized roof prisms with the added benefit of a larger surface area to give it a comfortable feel in the hand. All A series binoculars offer you impeccable viewing quality in a compact, portable and durable design, so you can enjoy carrying convenience without compromising performance. Compact roof and porro prism models that balance small size and premium image quality. These binoculars are easily packable when small size and weight are critical, but a high quality image is required. Premium multi-layer coatings assure the maximum light transmission through the binocular. The result is bright, crisp, true-to-life images in the widest range of viewing conditions. Durable construction includes fiber reinforced polycarbonate designs which combine light weight and rugged styling. The reinforced chassis is extremely rigid, but light enough to carry anywhere. Waterproof and nitrogen-filled (JIS Class 6) to handle the most extreme weather conditions (submersible to 1m).

I liked them so much I bought a second pair. Optically they are a nice surprise with good contrast, not much lens flare (if any), and minimal (if any) chromatic aberration anywhere in the field. I find these very sharp in and around the center, and very easy to get a sure focus. Some other binoculars I own require a few in's and outs to be certain of focus. I'm comparing to my old Swift Audubon 8.5 x 44's, which are exceptionally sharp and really do snap into focus, so these Pentaxes score quite well in that regard, especially for such an inexpensive binocular. Where they lose points is in the mechanics. The focusing is very stiff, both the center focus and the right-eye diopter adjustment. The twist-up eyecups don't have good positive detents. But they are lightweight and otherwise easy to hold and use. The field of view I call adequate considering my preference for at least a 400' field. Close focus (not really) is at about 12 feet. For the current price of $109, I think they're amazing, thus a full five stars. I use them for watching backyard birds at and around the feeders, but I am keeping one in the car at all times. Oh, and the neckstrap: take several deep breaths before attempting to install it....
