The Pentax PF-80ED-A Spotting Scope is a large and impressive optical performer, with a brilliant 80mm objective lens and the ability to accept any 1.25" astronomy eyepiece as well as 82mm filters at the front of the objective. It is 100% waterproof and fogproof, with durable rubber armor over an all-metal housing that's got a rotating tripod collar with click stops every 45°. I have owned my PF80-ed for over ten years and it has turned out to be a terrific purchase. The scope body includes excellent ED glass, but the real selling point is the eyepieces. The 8mm-24mm zoom (20x-60x) is excellent, particularly if one has limited expectations for viewing at over 45x or so. There now are scopes that deliver slightly better images using a zoom eyepiece, most notably large spotters made by Kowa and Swarovski. The Pentax PF80 Ed is a high performance spotting scope with excellent resolution and edge to edge sharpness at all magnification settings. When compared to other spotters costing significantly more money the Pentax was at least as clear and bright and the best value in the 80mm class. This spotting scope is primarily used at the rifle range to resolve bullet holes as small as .224 at distances up to 300 meters. The Pentax PF80 ED had no problems handling this task. Very satisfied would be an understatement.

Bought it with a fix focus Pentax SMC XF 12mm eyepiece. All Pentax scopes use standard 1.25 eyepieces. It has a 82mm thread for filters. Basically a link between photo lenses and astronomy equipment. You can't go wrong with Pentax.

I have had this product for over a decade. Once I bought this spotting scope, I had no more desire to upgrade. I use mine with the Pentax SMC 8mm to 24mm zoom eyepiece, so the combination is 20X to 60X. I find the 60X setting to be incredible, especially for studying targets at 100 yards. You can easily see where you've hit, what rings you've touched, and group size for even the smallest of calibers. It is even easy to distinguish between small bugs that may be walking on your target. The image is bright, contrasty, and of high resolution. I also use this set up to observe wildlife at distances up to 400 yards. It is possible to score deer on the Boone & Crockett scale at 300+ yards if you've got enough experience. As is true with any high magnification optic, this ... I plan to use the scope with a Nagler zoom eyepiece together with 25x100 binos on a fluid head for quick scans with binos and then high power viewing through the spotting scope mounted just to the side of the binos.This is not a triplet apo scope, but for under $ with waterproof and fogproof construction and adaption for basic astrophotogrphy available, I am very happy with my purchase. Optics are 8-9/10.
Purchased this scope based on reviews that I had read online on birding and astronomy sites, and on customer reviews. Also purchased Pentax XW 14mm eye piece. Thought it would be an awesome combination for watching wildlife. Image was dull and difficult to view even with the 20mm eye relief. Image was not really sharp. A friend of mine had just purchases a different manufacturer's 80mm scope with 20-60 power eyepiece for less than half the price of the Pentax with the eye piece, and the image was brighter, clearer, and vastly superior. I'm returning this to B&H.
I'll qualify my comments by saying that I haven't had an opportunity to use the scope at a distance beyond 100 yds. yet but so far I'm very pleased with it. Image quality, features and design are comparable to high end spotting scopes. The scope takes standard U.S. astronomical eyepieces which helps it to get the best out of the 80mm low dispersion objective lens.
Reviews for this scope were great. But, image was dull, lacked contrast, and extremely difficult to keep centered in my eye. Purchased very expensive Pentax xw eye piece to go along with this scope. Don't know if problem was with scope, eyepiece, or both. But, returned everything to B&H and purchased another brand,
I use this scope primarily for range shooting, and secondly for wildlife. I had this same scope for the last few years, and our home was burglarized and it was stolen. With insurance money, I could have bought any other one on the market, but didn't hesitate to buy this one again. The clarity is awesome, and good in lowlight too. I've used it many times in rain--no problem there. Even the case that stays on when in use is real nice and handy. For what I use it for, I have nothing negative to say.
I was able to look thru one of these at a shooting match this spring, and that was it-decision made. you really need a very steady tri-pod if using the 20-60 eyepiece but it is very clear even at max when steady. some of the reviews sound like people do not understand eyepieces and magnification a 14 mm does not equal 14 power in a 8mm-24mm eyepiece the 8mm is the 60 power the 24mm is the 20 power. a little research before ordering the eyepiece you want would help many purchasers. mine is so clear at 60 power I am thinking about ordering a 7mm or approximately 70 power with the 80mm the 100mm scope would result in higher magnification with the same eyepiece, as well, if not usable for shooting/hunting it will be good for astronomy anyway.
