Philips EP3221/40 Coffee Maker Fully-auto Espresso Machine 1.8 L

Easy to set up, having done a few bits to start the machine off it was ready to brew within minutes. Only slightly fidly part was the LatteGo milk container, which is unusual for sure, but once that’s set up it’s a real marvel to watch work. Machine is a little loud, but not abnormally loud for what it is, however it may help you wake up wary in the morning. The coffee itself - fantastic. Lots of versatility offered, as you are able to alter coffee and milk amounts for each drink to cater to your tastes. Also love the profile settings, which is useful for my wife and I who take our drinks different. Each profile auto saves the settings for each drink. Maintenance is easy enough. We had an Saeco Intellia for over about 12 years, which we loved, before it started being less reliable, throwing errors, wasting ground coffee, and just weaker coffee overall. I didn't want to spend another $800 or so on another superautomatic and decided to get this after watching/reading several reviews. It's only my wife and I who use this in the house. She prefers her morning double strength americano while I like a morning shot of espresso so we don't need a lot of the extra features of a more expensive superautomatic. The creme is about the same tho and still not nearly as much as I used to get with a manual espresso I had a long time ago (I think it was a cheap $80 delonghi but an excellent espresso maker nonetheless and WAY WAY WAY better than a Kureg or Nespresso which we've had before as well). The ground pucks are tighter too meaning there's more coffee grounds being packed in. What I also love about the Carina is that if you run out of water during the brew, it will wait until you refill the reservoir and let you continue the brew instead of dumping the grounds and forcing you to start over again like the Intellia did. Other things I like about the Carinia.. The waste ground collection is within the waste liquid reservoir and the grounds fill up a bit faster than the liquid.. which means it kinda forces us to dump both the grounds and the liquid whenever the grounds collection is filled up. This prevents the liquid from overfilling and spilling out which used to happen quite a lot with the Intellia that had the ground collection separate from the liquid. I am using the AquaClean filter for the moment to measure how effective it will be and the maintenance cost of replacing them every so often. We'll see if I want to keep using them or go back to the manual decalcification process. Anyways.. the Carina makes great coffee and is a bit easier to clean. Highly recommend it. Also, to anyone using a Kureg or Nespresso machines and looking to upgrade.. I strongly recommend getting a superautomatic.. they make a MUCH better cup of coffee and the Carina is probably the best one you'll find at this price range and not to mention you'll be saving money in the long run and create less waste for the landfill.

Clean filter problem

I purchased this machine because I liked the "clean filter feature" in the water tank. I moved to California 6 months ago and was not happy with the California water quality. I buy water for drinking, and use brita filter cooking. I use brita-filtered water for this machine hoping it to be filtered twice through the "clean filter" in the water tank, but the filter in the water tank interferes with the overall function. When filter is intalled, it is difficult for the water to be sucked into the machine. I think some how water gets congested in the filter and doesn't come through. It keeps failing to bring the water from the tank, and goes in to the "error" mode.Spoke with Phillips, received a new filter, thinking that a new filter may be different, but soon it did ... MoreI purchased this machine because I liked the "clean filter feature" in the water tank. Easy espresso

Do you love espresso and coffee and want to have it with minimal effort then this is the machine for you. Setting it up is pretty easy just follow the directions in the manual or look up the Philips Youtube video of the setup. Although I have only had this machine less than a week I've found it incredibly easy to use and clean thus far. I've already cleaned the brew group once and it was pretty simple. Like others say the first dozen or so shots you run will be pretty awful but give it a while and it should be fine. Keep a cut under the spout to collect water

This is a fully automated machine and it does an excellent job with what it is supposed to do. It fall short in a couple of minor areas, but they are enough to keep it from being a 5 rating with me.This machine takes time to power up and then when it shuts down it takes time. During the power up and shut down, the unit cleans itself with water that comes out the nozzle to fill your coffee. This water goes into the drip tray and can add up quickly if you allow the machine to power down after each cup!! To prevent water issues, place a cut under the nozzles when you are not actively brewing. I just drop then on and rake and they quickly spread into the soil. The birds are very happy with this as the soil now supports lots of worms!!Be careful of the water indicator on the tray!!! It is right in the way of your coffee cup if you pull it out straight and will catch on the cup. I think the indicator would have been better placed to the side of where you remove the cup instead of in its path.The machine is easy to assemble, but confusing to lubricate. Watch a video on this as the instructions do not do a good job with detailed pictures of what you need to do. Also keep in mind that you do NOT need a water filter in this unit if you are already using filtered water that is not chemical heavy. We have excellent water to start with and then I have a filter system on that for fresh drinking and cooking water. Requires very little scaling. Actually, none is required but it ,keeps the machine happy.Buying your favorite beans at a discount place keeps the cost of coffee very reasonable. If you are like me and drink 8 to 12 8 ounce cups of coffee a day, this machine can save you a fortune over a Nespresso machine that will cost you a dollar of more a cup. Is this machine as good as a Nespresso? No, but it is close enough to work. It does not have the same creme’ that the Nespresso has, but it is still quite good. The price of this machine and the Nespresso I had are about equal, so it is the cost of the coffee where a big difference is found. With Nespresso I was spending $320 every 6 weeks and with this machine I am spending $60 every 6 weeks. Nothing has changed. keep in mind that I am drinking espressos with max water for a very strong coffee!!! I do not add anything to my coffee as I like coffee and do not want to cover up the taste.Overall I am pleased with this machine and would recommend it. My only suggestion would be to use an artists brush that has been shortened to clean the coffee chute with instead of the small brush that is provided. I do not find the provided brush effective but do find the artists brush very effective.

I thpought that 3 temperature and flavor settings were a sales pitch, but was pleasantly surprised that playing with the temperature settings makes noticeable changes in coffee taste. One need to find the best temperature for every new brand of coffee. The thick crema as shown on the promotional pictures, is not real. I am getting at best half of that with any brand of coffee I used so far (five of them to date).Using pre-ground coffee never really worked for me (I did follow the instructions), it mostly went straight into the used grounds collection tray for some reason and contaminated the brew group all over, I had to take it out and clean = wasted at least 30 min. I like my coffee straight, but my wife uses the frother and complained that it stopped frothing milk (she used the same milk as before). t happened less than 2 month after purchase. I thoroughly cleaned the steam injector and tested it myself. Indeeed, the problem was there. The steam was coming out, but at an insufficient rate for efficient frothing. We will try to talk to a service center.Overall, the mashine makes good coffee, but the problems from the getgo raise concerns about the long term reliability.

I purchased this in January. I loved it until month 6 the Aquaclean filter turned red (might have been blinking red). I called customer service, they sent a new filter. I exchanged the filter. Still red. This is when the nightmare began. Just to get this approved was a series of hours long calls, promised calls back which never happened, and having to remember to call again. They made us ship the whole machine back to them. Told us it can take up to a month. Go find your daily coffee on your own! We spent over 20 days without the machine and had to get coffee for two each day... you do the math (almost half the cost of the machine!) This is exactly what we were looking for in a new coffee maker. We replaced our pod machine. We really like that there is little to no waste. We a little study, you can make almost any type of coffee/espresso drink, even without the specific button.I didn't give it five stars only for the fact that it does require pretty routine maintenance. We came from a pod system which was about as easy as you can get. So making coffee does require more effort (just a little). But the taste is so much better.We do go through a lot more coffee beans than anticipated. I think the puck size required to make a coffee/espresso is more than anticipated. The coffee is great and the machine is easy to use, clean and maintain. This is our second super automatic espresso machine with the previous machine (another brand - Java express) lasting us almost 6 years. Our old machine finally started to have problems with the oil from espresso roast beans contaminating a bean hopper sensor. We hope that since this machine’s brew group can be washed, we won’t have that problem. We especially like the smaller footprint…the machine is well designed and compact. It is easy to fill water and beans and empty the dregs and water spill tray from the front of the machine. The filter is also a high quality product.
