This game trumps regular Pictionary any day for me. I’m no artist, so it’s always embarrassing when it’s my turn to draw and my drawing looks NOTHING like the object lol. In Pictionary air, you have no idea what you’re drawing and everyone knows it. Can still be competitive and fun. It’s just a toss up on who will be good at this game! Bonus - you can cast it to your TV for bigger laughs, but it does lag a bit. Gist of the game: comes with a pen that works with an app on your phone to draw objects written on notecards. The goal of the game is for your team to guess as many objects you draw as possible in the time given. The catch - only your team can see what you’re drawing!

I got this on a whim one day when I had a group of friends coming over and I needed to have something to do with them. Since I love the original Pictionary game, I thought this Air version would be a great alternative. Let’s just say there is a learning curve that takes time to enjoy this game. I don’t think my friends and I enjoyed this as much as we thought we would because of the challenges with maneuvering the little wand and being able to see it on the television.

A fun take on Pictionary, Ages 8+

The pen does not require Bluetooth to play this, just pop in the battery and turn it on. It responds to the light-up color of the pen tip, which is red when you turn it on and green when you hold down the button to draw. Part of the fun is that you can be a little “off” as you’re drawing, because you cannot see the lines you’ve drawn. It defaults to Blue vs. Yellow (which matches the color of the cards), but you can adjust to others, like pink, green, orange, or purple when setting up a match. During setup, you also choose how many rounds (a minimum of 3) and how much time per round (a minimum of 90 seconds). Ideally, I would’ve liked to have had the option to customize time lengths per team in case you want younger players to have more time. Speaking of ages, this game is listed as Ages 8+, which seems about right. My 5 & 7 year olds played this, with varying difficulty. 5yo needs someone to read the clues to her and has trouble keeping the button held down on the pen when trying to draw- so overall, too young to play but wants to be included so we had one of the grownups help guide the pen with her. 7yo needed a little help with reading the clues, but could navigate the pen fairly well. Both got frustrated at points, but my 7yo still loved it and wanted to keep playing after the rest of the family was done. They also had to be reminded that they could interact with their drawings to help guessers. With older players, you wouldn’t have some of those issues, and I would definitely recommend as something to try for game night! The only other minor complaint is that the clue cards are supposed to be the same level of difficulty, but there are definitely some that seem a lot harder than others. As the game is running, there’s a way to keep track of clues that have been guessed correctly by clicking on the star icon (which also clears the drawing for the next clue), a pause button, and an eraser to clear whatever’s currently drawn. For my younger ones, we used the pause button at times to give them a little extra time to think. I imagine we’ll continue to get more use out of this game as the kids get older and I look forward to playing with more adults once the pandemic lockdown is over! I received this product for free in exchange for my honest review.

Drawing castles in the air.

First and foremost - this game works. When I bought my copy I had nightmares of mucking around with Bluetooth and trying to connect it to the television or an app with shared wifi or some such nonsense. The good (great) news is, you don’t need any of that. The pen glows green when the button is pressed down and red when it isn’t. All the app has to do is spot the green light and use it to draw a picture. Super simple. Is it fun? We all thought so. We had it set up so that the drawer could see themselves and what they were drawing on an iPad, which we cast to the tv so that everyone else could see it there. We had a good laugh and kind of made up the rules as we went. You won’t play this for hours and hours, but for $30 you are guaranteed to get at least an hours of laughs for a dozen people - that’s a pretty good deal. And you’ll probably get it out again when some other friends come around. So, I’m saying ‘buy this toy’. You could waste $30 on much dumber stuff. Enjoy!

Extremely Disappointed
7 February 2023

We are extremely disappointed in this game. My 9 year old kept seeing ads and really wanted it for Christmas. When we tried playing it Christmas Day we discovered any other light sources will cause problems. Well it was Christmas, we had lights everywhere. Even without the lights the drawing was still terrible. Everything looks like scribbles. Pretty much like giving a two year old a pen and trying to guess what is being drawn. It’s definitely not like what is shown in the commercial. My kids were very frustrated with it just as I was. I couldn’t even make a picture even close to recognizable.

Great Family Game
8 January 2023

This is such a fun game for the family! I love the digital spin on Pictionary, not having to worry about the large pieces of paper is a plus and having a TV large enough to view what folks are drawing is an even bigger plus. I love seeing my young children use their imagination to guess what each other is drawing and I love that the adults and grandparents are able to get in on the fun as well. I would highly recommend this to anyone of any age.

Great product, easy to use!

The PictionaryAir is a great product. It was very simple to set up, with clear instructions that my 8 year old son was able to follow. It was a little tricky at first to get decent drawings but after a couple of turns everyone got the hang of it. The interactive pen is great as you can stop pressing the button in between drawings to stop battery wastage and continuous lines. A great twist on classic Pictionary! Some of the subjects on the card were a little hard for the younger players but there was a great range of topics to draw. We all had a great laugh and will definitely be recommending it for Christmas to others. Loved the fact that it also came with a battery for the pen so it could be used straight away. The pen is lightweight too so easy to hold, however it is a bit chunky. I appreciate that may be due to the battery space and all the other mechanical bits that I have no clue about. Regardless of that, we found it easy to use and didn’t have any glitches whilst we played. The app worked for us while we weren’t connected to the internet or data which was a big plus as it meant we could play the game easily and whenever. The quick video instructions were a nice touch. The packaging could of been reduced in our opinion to a smaller box.We give it 5 starts and will be getting a lot of use out of it. Will be great when my son has friends over for play dates too!

It just doesn’t work
22 May 2022

Firstly, Mattel assume anyone with an iPhone also has an Apple TV device. It will not let you cast from iPhone to Chromecast.Secondly, the app just doesn’t work. Video is just frozen, then moves for 2 secs, then freezes, it doesn’t pick up the light, you can’t draw anything intentional at all. You just get a few random marks on screen while the drawer is just frozen.Utterly terrible.I note Mattel have put a load of fake and paid reviews on here too, which is a real shame.

Only compatible for a Tv with ios if you have apple TV
22 December 2022

You must have a compatible device for this. I have an iPhone that is compatible, but this game is no fun on a phone. We were hoping to be able to use this on a TV, thinking it would work with chrome cast. Unfortunately there needs to be very specific devices to be compatible. iPhone chromecast won’t work, but android chromecast will work. IOS devices can only use Apple TV for this. The technology and compatibility of this needs to be improved. I’ve also attached a photo that shows the compatibility list.
