I had initially bought a Slate Plus, but unfortunately it was not sufficient for my requirements. Although I missed the return deadline, GL.iNet offered me an exchange. Thanks again for the great service!I then bought the Beryl AX. The device is much smoother to use and the VPN speed is much faster. The power consumption is 3 watts and the device doesn't really get warm in standard operation and the built-in fan doesn't start up or is not audible at all. However, I do have two requests for improvement:1. the power supply unit is very large and could be replaced by a USB-C power supply unit with a detachable USB-C cable. That would really be a big advantage.2. the matching transport bag from GL.iNet is far too expensive in my opinion - especially compared to the ... MoreI had initially bought a Slate Plus, but unfortunately it was not sufficient for my requirements. I would love to buy it, but 16 euros for the bag is - imho- a poor price/performance ratio. Conclusion: Clear recommendation for GL.iNet, very clear recommendation for the excellent and fast Beryl AX!

Ideally, would like to see an option to add and save multiple “preferred” wifi networks (with configuration options including MAC address for each) or a “list” to auto-join or connect to with settings for known trusted networks. Still, works great. Tested with Comcast on Hotspot/Xfinity network. Can even specify which BSSID MAC address to connect to. Thats helpful if usingin an area with multiple WiFi access points broadcasting the same WiFi SSID name.GL Inet also offers free dynamic dns service that makes it work with no extra setup (or fees) for use with ISPs that use dynamic ip addressing.Tether support is set-and-forget. Will automatically setup tethering on connected phone, again without needing logging in.This device seems to have the fastest wireguard throughput (150MB) of any router in its price class. Speedy processor can handle fast encrypt/decryption.The GL.INET user interface is solid and provides 95% of the options customers need, and is polished. OpenWRT LUCI interface is still enabled as advanced settings— for full OpenWRT control including changing country code and enable country-specific WiFi channels.Overall a great value router with a lot of configurable options.Wanted to make this also provide AFP file sharing protocol for Time Machine Backups, but couldn’t get it to work after first backup. This issue may be because OpenWRT NETATALK package isn’t maintained or will work with larger than 2TB external drive. Not sure. I doubt many will need that feature.WiFi 6 connectivity exceeds ISP speed. I’m very impressed with this device, out performs routers 3x the price.Made a wise decision buying this unit.

For being such a small device, and fairly cheap compared to other premium travel routers, the GL-MT3000 is just great. The as for wifi range, surprisingly very good even tho it's antennas aren't massive. As for Features....I was shocked at how much this little device comes with,Especially the option to have this be a little security gateway. Setting it up with wireguard as a client and then using the physical toggle to go under-cover.Anything negative ?Not really, or mote like nothing that would make me give less stars personally.SMB seemed a bit flakey when copying larger files, with an out of space error. (Maybe smb tries to cache files that are uploaded in memory before pushing them to the usb storage device and that causes weird stuff with big files)Another ... MoreFor being such a small device, and fairly cheap compared to other premium travel routers, the GL-MT3000 is just great. The as for wifi range, surprisingly very good even tho it's antennas aren't massive. As for Features....I was shocked at how much this little device comes with,Especially the option to have this be a little security gateway. I purchased just before our vacation. The setup process was easy, and I loved the large amount of configurability. I tried out everything what I expected during the trip, everything was working fine.During the travel I had some issues connecting the train wifi due its captive portal, but with some google-ing a was able to modify the setup to work. However after that, the router was not seeing my phone's wifi tether. It did not showed up (my laptop was seeing it). I tried a lot of things, even factory reseted the router, nothing helped. Then I installed the latest beta firmware, and it was working again as expected. Since then its working fine. Because this inconvenience its just 4 stars out of 5, but its a good product.
This is the absolute best travel companion I could have asked for. I got my Beryl AX a couple of weeks ago and have been using it for the last few weeks while traveling non-stop around the US for both work and personal reasons.First, let's talk about size and travel compatibility: this thing is excellent. It's small, lightweight, and with the optional hardshell carrying case (that I highly recommend), it holds all of the necessary components and easily fits into either my backpack or luggage. The hardshell case is really strong and I would feel no hesitation whatsoever dumping it into checked luggage.Next, let's talk about software. The GL.iNet software is excellent. The hardshell case is really strong and I would feel no hesitation whatsoever dumping it into checked luggage.Next, let's talk about software. The GL.iNet software is excellent. After plugging the router in and navigating to the web interface it's simple to manage, easy to understand, and has a lot of more advanced features I appreciate. (For example, I configured the router to turn on network-wide adblocking when I toggle the switch on the side of the device.)Furthermore, I've had no trouble getting it to work off captive portal hotel WiFis which are usually a P.I.T.A.My preferred way to configure this is that the first time you set it up, I like to change all the default network settings to match my home WiFi, this way, when I'm on a trip, as soon as I plug the travel router in all my devices connect seamlessly without any hassle whatsoever. It's beautiful.Next, speed. This thing performs as expected, which is good. The Beryl AX is a WiFi 6 router and performs as such.I've generally found that if I'm within ~25ft of the router I'll have reasonably good coverage over the 5Ghz spectrum, and for anything further than that I'll switch to the 2GHz network instead. The only "downside" to this router, and I use the word downside conservatively, is that it doesn't support WiFi 7 and the 6GHz spectrum. As I'm writing this review in April of 2024, WiFi 7 is now out and operates over 6GHz, offering greater speeds, but most importantly: a new spectrum that is less congested. For a travel router, in particular, having WiFi 7 in the future will be nice as when you're on the road in a hotel with lots of busy 2.4 and 5GHz spectrum, your personal devices can use WiFi 7 with nearly 0 congestion. That would be nice, but I'm sure they'll build some WiFi 7-compatible routers at some point in the future =)
Got this and just used it on a trip to Japan. Worked well because I set up VPN so that I could access region restricted content while I was travelling. Also I was able to avoid setting up multiple phones, tablets, and laptops instead just logging in to the hotel wifi from the router. All the other devices were already set to use the travel router's wifi details and it worked flawlessly. One bit of advice when using Nord VPN. The router asks for the Nord VPN username/password. This is the 'Service Credentials' from manual setup NOT your normal username/password combo. Also you will likely have to connect and agree to the hotel wifi's terms and conditions before all the devices you had already set up will start working. It all makes sense but until you use the router ... MoreGot this and just used it on a trip to Japan. She also appreciated the ability to turn off the LEDs at night.
My love for GL-iNet all began with the GL-USB150 which I bought many years ago.I was not surprised at quality of this latest addition to my GL-iNet router collection. It is as good as any router gets. It’s easy to setup if that is what you are looking for. The VPN or WireGuard setup is straightforward. Just follow your service provider. The services this router provides is at the same level as those much more expensive routers.Let’s not forget to mention that you can easily use it as a wan router, tethered router or repeater. The user interface is the main reason I love these routers. If you are a fan of more advanced settings and want to tweak the open source settings; you can do that too!Totally recommend this router.
