But in order to have Dolby Atmos, you must have eArc capabilities on your TV and a Dolby Atmos enabled disc player or media streamer such as the Apple TV, Roku Ultra and Google TV.The Polk Sign S4 is primarily a dumb soundbar (meaning no wi-fi and app for your phone) which for some is a blessing as they prefer not to fiddle with both the sounder’s settings and their wi-fi’s settings. That said, connectivity is pretty simple out of the box.The soundbar comes with its own 4k enable HDMI cable and an optical cable for those who have older TVs. Do note that if you use the optical cable, you will not be able to enjoy Dolby Atmos sound (more on that later). It comes with a fairly simple remote that controls bass and voice volume and also has bluetooth should you want to play music on the soundbar using your phone. Unfortunately, this soundbar does not have OSD (or On Screen Display) meaning that you not only not know your volume levels but also there is no indicator whether audio output is in Dolby Atmos or not. The remote also has the capability to control the voice channels (but I am not sure if voice solely comes out of the center channel or not). Also note that there are controls to set the levels of the various channels in this soundbar so you are pretty much blind with regard to this and simply play it by ear.I have tried using this soundbar with several movies known for their soundtracks like the Matrix, Pearl Harbor, Saving Private Ryan, etc. Overall it provides a crisp sound with clear vocals which is truly a jump from your TV speakers. And even if it’s only a 3.1.2 system it still gives a sense of being immersed in sound. The sub-woofer provides decent bass but to expect it to perform as well compared to a much larger active sub-woofer. Nonetheless, this soundbar still gives a punch. And as I mentioned its Dolby Atmos enable sound, do not expect wide audio panning on this soundbar. Having no surround satellites, audio seems to me as one dimensional though you still get that immersive feeling when playing Atmos content. And sadly, Polk did not add the capability to expand this soundbar by making it a 5.2.1 or a 5.4.1 system. As such this soundbar fails in that department. But in spite of this, the Signs S4 works well in a bedroom even without satellite speakers. But playing it on your living room may leave you wanting. For that, I am removing one star from this soundbar.Overall, I would also consider 5.2.1 systems at this price point. But then again, if space is a constraint, the Polk Signa S4 is a simple soundbar worth considering.

First thing I tried was the Eternals movie that is Imax Enhance with Dolby Atmos and just wow it sounded incredible. It was significantly better than prior soundbar or internal speakers, you will hear some audio behind you and sound spread out farther to the sides. The dialogue spoken is clear and accurate & is adjustable with dialogue enhancement feature. Bass is punchy and defined with extra boom & brightness in the treble. The remote has direct access buttons for the inputs, TV, Aux, or Bluetooth, mute button, volume, and a bass control. Dedicated buttons allow selection of the Movie, Night, or Music modes, along with three levels of Voice Adjust, which is Polk's dialogue feature. The Signa S4 performs well and will be a massive upgrade for most who would like a higher sound experience without spending a lot of money for that level.

I was still missing a lot of the features I used to have with the old system though. This is the niche that Atmos capable sound bars seem to be aimed at, so I decided to give the Polk Signa S4 a chance. So far I have been very happy I did.Out of the box this soundbar has a very unexceptional look. This is not a criticism. I want my soundbar to blend in as unobtrusively as possible and the black on black and minimalist logo-ing do this well. The thing that surprised me a bit is how wide/long this sound bar is. It is indeed slim at just over 2.5 inches tall, but it is 41 inches long. I believe this is because of the dedicated center channel speaker. Paired with my wall mounted 65" screen it is fine, but it might be a consideration for some with smaller sets or other space limitations. The wireless sub has a down-firing speaker and a taller-than-than wide design which fit much better in my space than the more blocky sub that came with my previous sound bar. Like the sound bar the sub seems to be designed to blend in rather than get attention which is nice.Set up of the soundbar and sub could not have been easier. I had connected my old sound bar to the HDMI ARC port on the TV, so all I had to do was plug in the power, plug in the HDMi on the sound bar and turn it on. On my main TV, HDMI ARC output is automatic when connected, but I had an earlier experience setting up an older TV to use an ARC connection in my bedroom and that was a little more arcane, so I guess it would depend on the TV settings. When I plugged in the subwoofer it connected automatically to the soundbar as well and everything was up and running in less time than it took me with my previous soundbar. After setting up, I got to the fun part- testing with a variety of program options and playing with the settings to see what everything did. I first tested the sound by pulling up my Pandora account and throwing some music through it. I found that that the stereo sound was really quite good, and easily the best separation that I had experienced from a sound bar. The bass provided by the down-firing subwoofer was not as aggressive as the older bar's forward-facing model. My first feeling was that it was less effective than my old bar. I played around with the bass settings, and I found that I liked how the bass of the Signa S4 is FELT more than it's HEARD.After running through the bar's capabilities with music, I decided to see what the ATMOS capability could do with some content streaming from a galaxy far far away. I have to say that the audio with ATMOS content is really lush. That's just the only word I can come up with to describe it. Stereo separation is outstanding, and the "motion" of the audio through the sound stage is remarkable. Like with the music the bass was less and audible component than a tactile one, and did not overwhelm or muddy the sound at all. The sensation that the sound fills the space is superior to any other non-ATMOS soundbar I have used. The dedicated center channel speaker also set this bar apart from others I have previously tried. With a center speaker and the ability to adjust just the dialog of the content through the remote control I found that there was better balance between the spoken parts and the rest of the sound filed than I have ever experienced with any other soundbar. If this soundbar came packaged with some small, wireless rear satellites I think it would be the perfect surround sound solution for most people. One thing that I did notice with this soundbar that I didn't experience with my previous one was a noticeable lip-sync delay when playing the video. I was able to adjust it withing the TV's settings, but to get it to the audio to "line up" with the video I had to make a rather large adjustment. This wasn't impossible to correct, or even difficult, but I had not had the issue with my previous sound set ups (receiver or soundbar) so it was somewhat surprising and I wonder if it is because of the ATMOS capability. Like I said, I was able to adjust so not a deal-breaker, just though I would mention it.Overall, I am extremely pleased with this soundbar. While I think it would be impossible for any bar to completely mimic a well-placed surround speaker system, particularly an ATMOS-capable satellite system, this one has dramatically improved the audio part of my viewing experience.

Good Soundbar For The Price

Bought the Signa S4D on Black Friday after reading and viewing some reviews online. It sounds great, but I would suggest that the bass be a little deeper / stronger - it seems a little weak in that department.Other than that, connecting to the eARC port on the back of the TV and integrating the sound system to it is very easy. I didn't have to do anything. It's as though the TV updated itself and recognized the soundbar right away. I'm not sure if I should credit this to Polk Audio or to the TV. Regardless, very easy installation process.Another nice feature to have would be control of the Atmos up-firing speakers. If we could increase or decrease the volume out of these speaker, it would be a nice feature to have. I bought this as a gift for my mother's place for when we get together with the kids on holidays and etc., so this soundbar does the trick for playing video games and watching movies with them - it's more than enough. If I'm you, it's a good option to consider, especially if you can get a deal on it. Id rate it 5 out of 5 Stars if the bass were up to par with my old Samsung soundbar.

Great Sound
16 April 2023

After reading many reviews I finally settled on the Polk Signa S4, and was delighted with a sale by JB Hifi, which made a great buy. Installation was super easy and the system connected well. The remote is easy to use, and I use it occasionally when switching from movies to general TV. As we now have more programs being streamed with Dolby Vision and Dolly Atmos, this is the perfect sound bar to match with my superb LG C2 65 inch TV. There is not much not too like and I find the overall sound balanced and covering the spectrum of clear sound and deep bass, without any distortion. Though it does not have a voice assistant, I simply connect via Bluetooth and play my music through my phone. I am very happy with my decision and enjoy great sound with my TV. It is not a full surround sound system like my Bose system in my Home Theatre, but it does a very respectable job creating a virtual surround system with up firing speakers. Great sound at a reasonable price. I have not found a sound at this price point that is comparable in my view and deserve to be on your shortlist.

Great Sounding Affordable Soundbar
2 June 2022

This is my first product from Polk and I must admit that the Signa S4 was a great introduction to the company and its products. Inside the box came the sound bar, the subwoofer, a quick start guide, a remote ( with batteries supplied), two power cords (one for the soundbar and one for the subwoofer) a HDMI cable and an optical cable.First off this was incredibly easy to set up atleast with my tv. Once both the soundbar and subwoofer are connected to power and I connected the Hdmi cable to the soundbar and my tv’s ARC HDMI port, my tv automatically picked up and switched audio over to it right away, with both my tv’s remote and the Polk remote being able to control the volume. Immediately, I could immediately tell the difference in sound compared to just my tv and my previous speaker system. Also connected to my phone/tablet via Bluetooth provided no issues at all, it connected like any other device. I also like that the soundbar was sleek and the subwoofer was compact with both fitting nicely on/around my tv set. When it comes to sound there are many things I like here. First off, I can confirm that from my testing it was able to play DTS, Dolby Atmos, and Dolby Digital which was good enough for me even though I am sure it plays many more. The sound coming from the speaker and subwoofer is great and seems to fill the room effortlessly. Sound comes through clear and smooth and the bass is powerful yet not muddy and overwhelming, there is no difficulty feeling immersed in your content from an audio pov. When it comes to music I think these speakers do very well for the average consumer, I also appreciate that the S4 has a dedicated sound mode for music which indeed does have a noticeable impact. In fact, there are three dedicated sound modes (that are accessed from the remote) and I suggest using each for what they support, music mode, movie mode, and night mode(which throttles sound from the S4 to make it more appropriate for night use)I like that there is also a feature dedicated to attempting to distinguish vocals from the rest of the sounds being outputted by the soundbar, Polk calls it “Voice Adjust” and there are 3 levels that do apply a noticeable difference in media vocals, making it much easy to hear the voices of individuals in “noisy” backgrounds. There are LED that light up on the sound bar for indicating volume and bass level I just wish there was also some indication of what sound mode we were in.I think Signa S4 very good soundbar that offers a significant improvement to any tv’s internal speakers and it offers a variety of sound modes and features that will be useful for anyone. It is easy to set up, the bar has a low profile and the subwoofer is compact and easy to maneuver.

Impressive sound quality - value for the money

I am very impressed by the quality of sound this sound bar produces. This soundbar is 3.1.2 channel and it is very affordable compared to other leading brands out there. 3.1.2 channels from other brands prices starts almost £500.When watching movie it feels like you’re watching from movie houses.Very to setup, just connect the provided hdmi cable to your tv (hdmi earc/arc) plug the sound bar to power outlet, connect plug the wireless sub to the power outlet, turn on the tv, and the sub automatically connects, and you can use your tv remove to adjust the volume. The provided remote is really helpful as well specifically when adjusting the bass volume, voice adjustment, and the other preset, like movie, night mode, and music mode. The only cons for me for this ... MoreI am very impressed by the quality of sound this sound bar produces. If your room is carpeted, seems like the bass was absorb by the carpet. To make the bass sound more, I added a cardboard where i place the sub. But still the sub sound is amazing.I recommend this sound bar to anyone whose budget are a bit tight like me. For this price, compared to the overall quality of this sound bar, every penny is worth it.

S4D - Very easy installation, excellent sound

What I liked - This Polk soundbar was the simplest, easiest piece of technology to set up that I’ve ever encountered!Simply had to plug in two power cords, and one hdmi cord, and it just worked! My SONY TV and its remote automatically worked with it as well. Ready to use in only moments after unboxing it. It’s a very pleasant sounding soundbar. Movies sound good. Music sounds good. Voice boost works good. Good soundstage for a soundbar. What could be better - This Polk soundbar could be be improved with a more powerful subwoofer. I have to keep the bass control turned all the way up, and it’s often barely enough bass as I’d like for some movies. (It should use a subwoofer like it’s sister Denon version, which is an identical soundbar except for the bigger/better ... MoreWhat I liked - This Polk soundbar was the simplest, easiest piece of technology to set up that I’ve ever encountered!Simply had to plug in two power cords, and one hdmi cord, and it just worked! (It should use a subwoofer like it’s sister Denon version, which is an identical soundbar except for the bigger/better subwoofer. Another thing that would improve this soundbar is to adopt the "pure" mode that is provided on it’s identical sister Denon soundbar. This enables turning off all sound coloring, which is nice for listening to music when you don’t want the music artificially processed. This feature got great reviews for the twin-sister Denon soundbar.Bottom line - This a very nice-looking, and nice-sounding soundbar. You really can’t beat it for the price. Especially if you get the $100 cheaper (almost identical) S4D version, which differs only in the grille cloth used. And only available on their website. (I got that cheaper version, and the cloth used is nice.)One other thing - I accidentally was sent, and charged for, a 2nd soundbar (different model). Polk made the return of this unwanted unit extremely simple and easy. I called them, and they were very nice about it. They sent me a prepaid fedex label. Fedex came and got it. Polk is a nice company to do business with, and seems to have a customer-first attitude.

Simple setup, complex and amazing sound!

This soundbar is meant for people who want ease of setup. Plug it in, set it, and forget it. We utilized the HDMI hookup to the HDMI eARC port of our TV which allows the LG TV remote to control the volume! Utilizing the HDMI cable hooked up to the soundbar and plugged into your HDMI eARC port on your TV allows you to get the full Dolby Atmos audio experience this soundbar can provide. The delivery of clear vocals, mids, and trebles is all in the favor of this soundbar. We also like the top firing speakers as they do help to create more overhead audio dynamics as advertised. The 5.9" wireless subwoofer delivers impressive bass notes for its size and appears very well built. Of note, I really like the rubber-bottomed feet of the subwoofer enclosure, as it is anti-slide and works really well on the wooden floors in the living room and they also elevate the subwoofer which helps to minimize rattling of nearby objects. Some subwoofers have a tendency to slide around overtime, but these anti-slip feet prevent that. The punch bass notes come through nicely as well as low vocal tones. A feature we like with this soundbar though it the nighttime mode that can be utilized on the fly with the soundbar remote, which dampens down the bass notes and increases vocal clarity so you can use the soundbar at night and have a lower chance of disturbing your neighbors or partner if they are asleep in a room nearby.Altogether, I have no reservations in recommending this soundbar to anyone looking for a compact, affordable soundbar and subwoofer setup that includes Dolby Atmos certification. Thanks for reading my review and hope this helps to encourage you in your purchase decision!

The Polk Signa S4 Ultra-Slim TV Sound Bar with Wireless Subwoofer are excellent additions to our living room television. Setup was as easy as the advertisements and quick-start guide suggest. To take advantage of all of the soundbar’s features, your TV needs to have one of those “eARC” HDMI ports, which allow communication in both directions, so while you usually think of HDMI as an input, the sound is actually output through the eARC HDMI port to the soundbar. The TV’s on-screen volume level indicator works with this soundbar through this both-way communication process. My TV has an eARC port.Subwoofer installation is also simple in that all you do is plug it into a wall outlet. It connects to the soundbar through, I think, Bluetooth, but I didn’t have to do anything to pair the devices or anything else to get them to communicate with each other. It all happened automatically. The setup guide was exactly right...just set it on the floor (along the same wall as the soundbar is recommended) and plug it in. There isn’t even an on-off switch. It just wakes up when the soundbar is turned on.Keep in mind, however, that using this soundbar with an eARC port uses up one of the HDMI ports on your TV. If you don’t have an eARC port, or don’t want use it because it’s already in use by another device, the sound bar can also be connected using the included optical cable, or, barring that, you can connect it to your TV’s old-school audio output jack. Remember, though, that only the eARC connection supports the Dolby Atmos feature of the soundbar, which, according to the literature, includes, among other things, “up-firing drivers to take advantage of Atmos’ height channels to send sound over your head.”Wherever the sound was being sent, the sound from the TV using the soundbar and subwoofer is MILES better than the TV’s internal sound. The most noticeable difference is the deep base the subwoofer provides, which really makes the experience much more like that in a movie theater. I’m not one for wall-thumping base that shakes the whole house and wakes the neighbors, but I do appreciate the more complete range of sound the soundbar and subwoofer provide. Another difference is that, with the soundbar, the sound is much more room-filling.Another nice touch is that everything sets itself up automatically with regard to control of the soundbar by the TV remote. While my wife was in favor of improved sound, she was really not looking forward to adding yet another remote to the little basket we keep on a side table. Fortunately, it won’t be necessary to use the Polk’s remote unless you want to take advantage of some of the extra sound modification processes it offers. The soundbar automatically set itself up to communicate with our satellite TV remote, which is the main remote we use to control the TV.You will, however, need to use the Polk remote to take advantage of the different sound modes it offers. In addition to standard “movie” mode, it offers a “night” mode where the bass is reduced, and a “music” mode where the audio is “enhanced when listening to music or watching TV programs or movies with music in them.” I tried these three different sound modes, and while I could definitely detect the difference between the night mode and the other two, I could not really hear a significant difference between the movie mode and the music mode. One other feature available only with the Polk remote that I’m looking forward to trying out more in the future is the “voice adjust” feature. Here there are three different settings, labeled “1,” “2,”, and “3" and where the idea is that the voice channel level is adjusted “to make dialog more crisp and clear.” One thing I’ve noticed recently in watching sporting events like golf or baseball is that the background sound of the fans in the stands or the crowds at the golf course are sometimes so loud that it drowns out what the announcer is saying, or at least the announcer is more difficult to hear. I would like to have a way to enhance the volume of the voice without increasing the volume of the background. I have tried this a couple of times, and it seems to help, but I’m going to have to play with it more down the road.All-in-all, adding this soundbar and woofer to your home theater/living room TV would be nothing short of a tremendous improvement over the sound built-in to most TVs. It’s called “ultra slim,” and that’s true. It is among the lowest-height sound bars I’ve seen or used, and it is very unobtrusive sitting on the cabinet in front of our TV. Highly recommended.
