But in order to have Dolby Atmos, you must have eArc capabilities on your TV and a Dolby Atmos enabled disc player or media streamer such as the Apple TV, Roku Ultra and Google TV.The Polk Sign S4 is primarily a dumb soundbar (meaning no wi-fi and app for your phone) which for some is a blessing as they prefer not to fiddle with both the sounder’s settings and their wi-fi’s settings. That said, connectivity is pretty simple out of the box.The soundbar comes with its own 4k enable HDMI cable and an optical cable for those who have older TVs. Do note that if you use the optical cable, you will not be able to enjoy Dolby Atmos sound (more on that later). It comes with a fairly simple remote that controls bass and voice volume and also has bluetooth should you want to play music on the soundbar using your phone. Unfortunately, this soundbar does not have OSD (or On Screen Display) meaning that you not only not know your volume levels but also there is no indicator whether audio output is in Dolby Atmos or not. The remote also has the capability to control the voice channels (but I am not sure if voice solely comes out of the center channel or not). Also note that there are controls to set the levels of the various channels in this soundbar so you are pretty much blind with regard to this and simply play it by ear.I have tried using this soundbar with several movies known for their soundtracks like the Matrix, Pearl Harbor, Saving Private Ryan, etc. Overall it provides a crisp sound with clear vocals which is truly a jump from your TV speakers. And even if it’s only a 3.1.2 system it still gives a sense of being immersed in sound. The sub-woofer provides decent bass but to expect it to perform as well compared to a much larger active sub-woofer. Nonetheless, this soundbar still gives a punch. And as I mentioned its Dolby Atmos enable sound, do not expect wide audio panning on this soundbar. Having no surround satellites, audio seems to me as one dimensional though you still get that immersive feeling when playing Atmos content. And sadly, Polk did not add the capability to expand this soundbar by making it a 5.2.1 or a 5.4.1 system. As such this soundbar fails in that department. But in spite of this, the Signs S4 works well in a bedroom even without satellite speakers. But playing it on your living room may leave you wanting. For that, I am removing one star from this soundbar.Overall, I would also consider 5.2.1 systems at this price point. But then again, if space is a constraint, the Polk Signa S4 is a simple soundbar worth considering.

I initially got the jbl 5.1 bar, it has a 10in sub. It has no aux in, so i had a really bad delay between my Sonos connect thru the jbl and the rest of my Sonos products. I like low bass, so the Sonos bars just aren't enough alone and I'm not paying what they want for a sub with a bar. I got the signa s4 because of the aux in. The delay isn't as bad as routing through the tv to the jbl via arc, but it still has a delay considering the Sonos connect is going starting into the s4 aux in.If the s4 sub had a little more umph I'd keep it over the jbl. Its ok sounding, it seems to come alive at about 40hz, but it just can't compare to the jbl 10in. When cranked, it just has to work too hard and gets kinda muddy.I'm not terribly impressed with atmos over the standard ... MoreI initially got the jbl 5.1 bar, it has a 10in sub. You can tell the difference, but unless i had full satellites, i don't think I'd fuss with it. Maybe i expected to much from the over head projection, and I'm comparing similar price bars with 5 surrounds anyways. Also the display kinda sucks, the jbl tells you in words what is going on. Polk just has lights, you need to remember what means what, like 3 blinks on the right led for voice setting 3.The settings are super nice. With jbl did that. The night mode is great. The choice to find a suitable setting is much better than jbls bass only adj.Ultimately I'm probably keeping the jbl solely because of it's sub, it just sounds amazing deep down and the display on the polk bugs me.Both do sound great. If i didn't compare each side by side, id be happy with either. Both have delays, which is only noticable when using multiroom sources. Though the s4 is much less noticeable because of it's analog in.

After reading many reviews I finally settled on the Polk Signa S4, and was delighted with a sale by JB Hifi, which made a great buy. Installation was super easy and the system connected well. The remote is easy to use, and I use it occasionally when switching from movies to general TV. As we now have more programs being streamed with Dolby Vision and Dolly Atmos, this is the perfect sound bar to match with my superb LG C2 65 inch TV. There is not much not too like and I find the overall sound balanced and covering the spectrum of clear sound and deep bass, without any distortion. Though it does not have a voice assistant, I simply connect via Bluetooth and play my music through my phone. I am very happy with my decision and enjoy great sound with my TV. It is not a full surround sound system like my Bose system in my Home Theatre, but it does a very respectable job creating a virtual surround system with up firing speakers. Great sound at a reasonable price. I have not found a sound at this price point that is comparable in my view and deserve to be on your shortlist.

This is my first product from Polk and I must admit that the Signa S4 was a great introduction to the company and its products. Inside the box came the sound bar, the subwoofer, a quick start guide, a remote ( with batteries supplied), two power cords (one for the soundbar and one for the subwoofer) a HDMI cable and an optical cable.First off this was incredibly easy to set up atleast with my tv. Once both the soundbar and subwoofer are connected to power and I connected the Hdmi cable to the soundbar and my tv’s ARC HDMI port, my tv automatically picked up and switched audio over to it right away, with both my tv’s remote and the Polk remote being able to control the volume. Immediately, I could immediately tell the difference in sound compared to just my tv and my previous speaker system. Also connected to my phone/tablet via Bluetooth provided no issues at all, it connected like any other device. I also like that the soundbar was sleek and the subwoofer was compact with both fitting nicely on/around my tv set. When it comes to sound there are many things I like here. First off, I can confirm that from my testing it was able to play DTS, Dolby Atmos, and Dolby Digital which was good enough for me even though I am sure it plays many more. The sound coming from the speaker and subwoofer is great and seems to fill the room effortlessly. Sound comes through clear and smooth and the bass is powerful yet not muddy and overwhelming, there is no difficulty feeling immersed in your content from an audio pov. When it comes to music I think these speakers do very well for the average consumer, I also appreciate that the S4 has a dedicated sound mode for music which indeed does have a noticeable impact. In fact, there are three dedicated sound modes (that are accessed from the remote) and I suggest using each for what they support, music mode, movie mode, and night mode(which throttles sound from the S4 to make it more appropriate for night use)I like that there is also a feature dedicated to attempting to distinguish vocals from the rest of the sounds being outputted by the soundbar, Polk calls it “Voice Adjust” and there are 3 levels that do apply a noticeable difference in media vocals, making it much easy to hear the voices of individuals in “noisy” backgrounds. There are LED that light up on the sound bar for indicating volume and bass level I just wish there was also some indication of what sound mode we were in.I think Signa S4 very good soundbar that offers a significant improvement to any tv’s internal speakers and it offers a variety of sound modes and features that will be useful for anyone. It is easy to set up, the bar has a low profile and the subwoofer is compact and easy to maneuver.
I bought this sound bar in conjunction with a new TV for my apartment set up. My main goals for this sound bar was:-Music quality for hosting get togethers-True Dolby Atmos cinema-3.5mm hook up for my record playerThis sound bar delivered amazingly on the above. Having watched true Dolby Atmos content via a Roku Ultra, passed thru my new Vizio MQ7 via eArc and confirming with the light blue light on the sound bar the sound quality is nothing short of stunning. True "airy" feeling surround. Now this will not reproduce like a true 5.1/7.1 system can with dedicated behind channels, but I wanted a 2.1 system as I am in an apartment and didn't need clutter of wires behind my couch. True "airy" feeling surround. Now this will not reproduce like a true 5.1/7.1 system can with dedicated behind channels, but I wanted a 2.1 system as I am in an apartment and didn't need clutter of wires behind my couch. This delivers true cinema quality sound on movies shot in Atmos and even TV shows. It produces "half bubble" of sound, not like an all enveloping sound bubble a 5.1/7.1 system would give. But well more than a wall of sound typical sound bars would give. The 2 Atmos height channels are noticeable and give dimension to the sound stage making it feel like a half bubble of sound. For the price of $400 this is a great deal. Music wise this is a true neutral sound system, everything from EDM to rap to rock sounds true and well balanced. I'll add I considered and bought this system also for it's low tech 3.5mm connection for my record player--I am BLOWN away by the sound quality of this sound bar paired with my Audio-Technica AT-LP120 player.I cross shopped this system with a Klipsch Cinema 600 system and was worried this system would not produce enough bass with a barely 6" sub, but it is more than is enough for most medium sized living rooms. Deep true bass that I have yet to feel is underpowered. For $400 you are getting true Dolby Atmos, not a fake processor powered version, a great sound stage and an overall great product from a legacy brand like Polk. I would give this sound bar a 9/10 and highly recommend it for doing everything it advertises and then some. My only complaint really nitpick is the remote is cheap feeling, but I rarely use it as my Roku remote controls the bar with no issue.
Underwhelming and muddy. Loses connection via HDMI ARC.Disclosure: I'm a bit of an audio snob. When we moved my wife informed me I wasn't allowed to have all of my audio components and tower speakers in the new living room, so I went looking for a smaller solution. My good stuff is in the basement for movies so I didn't want to drop $1k+ on a full surround system. I bought the Signa S4 on Black Friday and was excited to get it set up. Polk is a well known brand and the system has great reviews. Obviously I wasn't expecting the same performance of my 7.2 Infinity Reference system. I wasn't expecting wall shattering bass with a 5 and something inch wireless subwoofer. I just wanted to be able to hear my television, with well-rounded sound, in a room with vaulted ceilings. Ridiculously easy to setup and the sub paired immediately. Here's the problem: the mids and highs are muddy, like cheap 1980s paper cones. There are voice enhancement features, but all that does is destroy the equalizer balance. After doing some more research, I found out that all of the space in the bar is consumed by atmos speakers and side effect channels, and the center is a tiny single driver little thing about an inch in diameter. I tried to adjust, but I just couldn't. Icing on the cake is when it dropped connection to the tv HDMI port mid show and I had to power cycle to get it back. Returned this today and got a Bose 900. Different ballpark in price, but it sounds better than this system even without a sub.
What I liked - This Polk soundbar was the simplest, easiest piece of technology to set up that I’ve ever encountered!Simply had to plug in two power cords, and one hdmi cord, and it just worked! My SONY TV and its remote automatically worked with it as well. Ready to use in only moments after unboxing it. It’s a very pleasant sounding soundbar. Movies sound good. Music sounds good. Voice boost works good. Good soundstage for a soundbar. What could be better - This Polk soundbar could be be improved with a more powerful subwoofer. I have to keep the bass control turned all the way up, and it’s often barely enough bass as I’d like for some movies. (It should use a subwoofer like it’s sister Denon version, which is an identical soundbar except for the bigger/better ... MoreWhat I liked - This Polk soundbar was the simplest, easiest piece of technology to set up that I’ve ever encountered!Simply had to plug in two power cords, and one hdmi cord, and it just worked! Another thing that would improve this soundbar is to adopt the "pure" mode that is provided on it’s identical sister Denon soundbar. This enables turning off all sound coloring, which is nice for listening to music when you don’t want the music artificially processed. This feature got great reviews for the twin-sister Denon soundbar.Bottom line - This a very nice-looking, and nice-sounding soundbar. You really can’t beat it for the price. Especially if you get the $100 cheaper (almost identical) S4D version, which differs only in the grille cloth used. And only available on their website. (I got that cheaper version, and the cloth used is nice.)One other thing - I accidentally was sent, and charged for, a 2nd soundbar (different model). Polk made the return of this unwanted unit extremely simple and easy. I called them, and they were very nice about it. They sent me a prepaid fedex label. Fedex came and got it. Polk is a nice company to do business with, and seems to have a customer-first attitude.
This soundbar is meant for people who want ease of setup. Plug it in, set it, and forget it. We utilized the HDMI hookup to the HDMI eARC port of our TV which allows the LG TV remote to control the volume! Easy, one remote operation as advertised.Included in the box are the soundbar, remote, batteries for the remote, an HDMI cable, optical audio cable, the power cable, startup manual, and the subwoofer. The bar itself is the perfect size for the fireplace mantle we have it on. At less than 4 inches deep, it should work for even the slimmest mantle places. It has a pleasing, low profile appearance with its black mesh wrap. The indicators on the front are very unobtrusive and notify you of your volume changes and other setting changes. The sound is excellent and ... MoreThis soundbar is meant for people who want ease of setup. Utilizing the HDMI cable hooked up to the soundbar and plugged into your HDMI eARC port on your TV allows you to get the full Dolby Atmos audio experience this soundbar can provide. The delivery of clear vocals, mids, and trebles is all in the favor of this soundbar. We also like the top firing speakers as they do help to create more overhead audio dynamics as advertised. The 5.9" wireless subwoofer delivers impressive bass notes for its size and appears very well built. Of note, I really like the rubber-bottomed feet of the subwoofer enclosure, as it is anti-slide and works really well on the wooden floors in the living room and they also elevate the subwoofer which helps to minimize rattling of nearby objects. Some subwoofers have a tendency to slide around overtime, but these anti-slip feet prevent that. The punch bass notes come through nicely as well as low vocal tones. A feature we like with this soundbar though it the nighttime mode that can be utilized on the fly with the soundbar remote, which dampens down the bass notes and increases vocal clarity so you can use the soundbar at night and have a lower chance of disturbing your neighbors or partner if they are asleep in a room nearby.Altogether, I have no reservations in recommending this soundbar to anyone looking for a compact, affordable soundbar and subwoofer setup that includes Dolby Atmos certification. Thanks for reading my review and hope this helps to encourage you in your purchase decision!
I bought this soundbar to replace a Harman Kardon Enchant 800 soundbar and 10" Subwoofer combination that I had previously. I loved the HK system...when it worked, but it was too flakey to use every day and constantly requiring a reboot to regain functionality. Given my long standing great experience with Polk products, I bought the S4 soundbar and am very happy I did.We use the S4 in our family room, which has a vaulted ceiling and is about 17x20 in size, and the S4 really sounds excellent. I've watched a few Atmos audio movies and the spatial separation the bar delivers is amazing. I really love the voice/talking presets...we recently watched a stand-up comedian special and being able to amplify/highlight just his voice was perfect. I really love the voice/talking presets...we recently watched a stand-up comedian special and being able to amplify/highlight just his voice was perfect. I also connected via bluetooth and streamed music via the soundbar, and it also performed very well. The soundbar is excellent for mids and highs - very clear and natural sound and I get very good separation and surround for a 2.1 channel soundbar. The bar itself blows the much more expensive HK 800 into the weeds. The only shortcoming of the S4 system is the subwoofer. It's only a 6" driver, in a very light weight cabinet, and falls short compared to the excellent soundbar's performance. It doesn't have quite enough impact for me. I found it best to just leave the bass setting at neutral, and then the bass is well-controlled, just "light". If there was a subwoofer upgrade for the S4 bar, I would order it tomorrow. I followed Polk's recommendation of placing the sub on the same wall as the soundbar, and tried several locations to see if I could get some additional bass performance. At this price point, I am very pleased with my Polk purchase and it's a perfect "daily use" system for our family room.
The Polk Signa S4 Ultra-Slim TV Sound Bar with Wireless Subwoofer are excellent additions to our living room television. We have a 70-inch smart TV which has a great picture, but we have been using only the TV’s built-in sound system for audio. The sound is perfectly okay, but I have had experience with sound bars in the past (I have one on my den TV), and I was looking forward to see what a sound bar might do for this TV and viewing experience. The Polk sound bar and subwoofer do not disappoint. Setup was as easy as the advertisements and quick-start guide suggest. To take advantage of all of the soundbar’s features, your TV needs to have one of those “eARC” HDMI ports, which allow communication in both directions, so while you usually think of HDMI as an input, the sound is actually output through the eARC HDMI port to the soundbar. The TV’s on-screen volume level indicator works with this soundbar through this both-way communication process. My TV has an eARC port.Subwoofer installation is also simple in that all you do is plug it into a wall outlet. It connects to the soundbar through, I think, Bluetooth, but I didn’t have to do anything to pair the devices or anything else to get them to communicate with each other. It all happened automatically. The setup guide was exactly right...just set it on the floor (along the same wall as the soundbar is recommended) and plug it in. There isn’t even an on-off switch. It just wakes up when the soundbar is turned on.Keep in mind, however, that using this soundbar with an eARC port uses up one of the HDMI ports on your TV. If you don’t have an eARC port, or don’t want use it because it’s already in use by another device, the sound bar can also be connected using the included optical cable, or, barring that, you can connect it to your TV’s old-school audio output jack. Remember, though, that only the eARC connection supports the Dolby Atmos feature of the soundbar, which, according to the literature, includes, among other things, “up-firing drivers to take advantage of Atmos’ height channels to send sound over your head.”Wherever the sound was being sent, the sound from the TV using the soundbar and subwoofer is MILES better than the TV’s internal sound. The most noticeable difference is the deep base the subwoofer provides, which really makes the experience much more like that in a movie theater. I’m not one for wall-thumping base that shakes the whole house and wakes the neighbors, but I do appreciate the more complete range of sound the soundbar and subwoofer provide. Another difference is that, with the soundbar, the sound is much more room-filling.Another nice touch is that everything sets itself up automatically with regard to control of the soundbar by the TV remote. While my wife was in favor of improved sound, she was really not looking forward to adding yet another remote to the little basket we keep on a side table. Fortunately, it won’t be necessary to use the Polk’s remote unless you want to take advantage of some of the extra sound modification processes it offers. The soundbar automatically set itself up to communicate with our satellite TV remote, which is the main remote we use to control the TV.You will, however, need to use the Polk remote to take advantage of the different sound modes it offers. In addition to standard “movie” mode, it offers a “night” mode where the bass is reduced, and a “music” mode where the audio is “enhanced when listening to music or watching TV programs or movies with music in them.” I tried these three different sound modes, and while I could definitely detect the difference between the night mode and the other two, I could not really hear a significant difference between the movie mode and the music mode. One other feature available only with the Polk remote that I’m looking forward to trying out more in the future is the “voice adjust” feature. Here there are three different settings, labeled “1,” “2,”, and “3" and where the idea is that the voice channel level is adjusted “to make dialog more crisp and clear.” One thing I’ve noticed recently in watching sporting events like golf or baseball is that the background sound of the fans in the stands or the crowds at the golf course are sometimes so loud that it drowns out what the announcer is saying, or at least the announcer is more difficult to hear. I would like to have a way to enhance the volume of the voice without increasing the volume of the background. I have tried this a couple of times, and it seems to help, but I’m going to have to play with it more down the road.All-in-all, adding this soundbar and woofer to your home theater/living room TV would be nothing short of a tremendous improvement over the sound built-in to most TVs. It’s called “ultra slim,” and that’s true. It is among the lowest-height sound bars I’ve seen or used, and it is very unobtrusive sitting on the cabinet in front of our TV. Highly recommended.
