So my much loved Hario Slim was starting to age and since rejuvenating parts were the cost of a new grinder and a substantial wait I decided to try a new grinder. Thus this review is as much a comparison between the two as it is a review of the porlex in its own right.I don't find much of a difference between grind consistency, the porlex is much faster though and seems quieter.I prefer the hand ergonomics of the slim, the porlex moves around in my hand a little bit while grinding and the handle needs force to be applied downwards or it feels a bit wobbly while grinding. The simplicity of loading is a plus to the porlex, but the ease is a with the slightly larger hopper opening is a plus to the slim. I can catch my knuckles on the crank arm if I'm not careful, but that's a price I'm willing to pay for freshly ground coffee that tastes so much better than the (quality) instant I was drinking - I had to sweeten the instant!Other than that, the Porlex is a great little grinder - suited to my modest consumption and occasional need to take it with me when I go away. A good pairing with an Aeropress! And I like the gentle exercise, the sound of the grind, and the scent of the coffee - as a kid there was a roaster in the local High St and I loved the smell, but hadn't yet acquired the taste for coffee.

Tldr i recommend from a noob.So heres the long story I heard specifically the mini porlex was decent and found the tall for the capacity. The only other grinder i own is one of the hario dome convex wood body and it was not quite comfortable to use. It was difficult to feed the hopper being off angle, is big enough to not be able to hold for my tiny hands so i have to sit it on the bench, adjusting grind is tedious as **** being a thread and locking nut adjustment, hard to clean as the wood body has threads and coffee can catch in them when pouring out. The porlex fixes all that and then some. First the whole thing is pretty small in general with like 30-40g capacity which i usually go 24-28g medium fine and for espresso 8-16g for the nanopresso doesn't take that ... MoreTldr i recommend from a noob.So heres the long story I heard specifically the mini porlex was decent and found the tall for the capacity. First the whole thing is pretty small in general with like 30-40g capacity which i usually go 24-28g medium fine and for espresso 8-16g for the nanopresso doesn't take that long to grind. Small enough to hold which i think is way more comfy to use while grinding. The spring loaded clicks is so much easier all you have to do is zero real quick then couple clicks out for grind size and note it down for which ever coffee you're using. The cup is cylindrical so it pops the coffee right out and not catch on anything but now some nit picks. Would have liked a bigger handle knob or at least was threaded so that i could print or hand make my own knob. The hopper is narrow which makes pouring coffee beans smidge tricky but at least its open at the top and not off angle and have to finagle the whole thing. Wish the clicks were more positive, deeper and maybe have half clicks because from the end of one click to the start of the next theres quite a bit of adjustment especially when doing espresso grind but for larger grinds doesn’t necessarily need it. The coffee catcher cup isn't flat on the bottom theres like an elevated base ridge in the centre which can collect tiny amount of coffee around the edges. Wish it had some rubber oring for the top lid and bottom cup to feel more secure as i grip the hopper my hand does crossover the lid and top of cup section which does wiggle it out of “lock” per say. Otherwise real happy i got this as adjusting for grind is sooooooo much easier. Would highly recommend from a noob coffee guy on a reasonable budget. Speaking of which in terms of price its sort of in the middle as its under 100aud and has a bunch of features that are better than what i have previously (being the one Grinder i own).
I'm just getting into the burr grinder world after a couple of years using a blade grinder. So far, I've been very impressed with the Porlex Tall II. It seems a good value for the price, as there is not much under $100 CAD that is well-reviewed.I've been using the grinder for french press and Moka pot so far. It is easily adjustable to whatever grind setting you prefer. I would recommend testing different settings, as I found that the general recommendation (~10 for french press) to be a bit fine, resulting in overextraction. The sweet spot for me seems to be more like 12-14.The grinder is made of quality parts and is easily dismantled for cleaning. The grinds bin fastens firmly to the body, but there is some minor slippage during grinding. The grinds bin fastens firmly to the body, but there is some minor slippage during grinding. I find myself switching hands mid-grind to maintain good grip. Every now and then, a bean seems to get stuck, and I have to "rewind" the grinder a bit to get it grinding again. I imagine this is true of any grinder, and I've also found it more of a problem with lighter roast beans. The grinds bin is convenient for weighing your beans, and once you've weighed them, it pours nicely into the top of the grinder. I haven't found any beans bouncing out while pouring, which I know is a complaint for other hand grinders.Overall this is a great grinder, producing consistent grinds in the coarser range. I have yet to try it on finer settings in the espresso/Turkish range. I recommend this if you want to get into burr grinders at an affordable price.
I was recently gifted some nice beans and didn't have a grinder. After some research and deciding to buy something something of quality without breaking the bank I settled on this model. Great decision! This grinder is lightweight, but sturdy. I generally use either a French press or an aeropress. So my needs are fairly simple in that I don't need fine grounds like are required for espresso. The grind setting step screw is very easy to use. This grinder can really chew through beans too and doesn't require much strength to use; although it does need some stamina. It's easy to clean and holds up to 35 grams of beans without issue.
This is my first burr grinder ever. Even though it can be a little work on the wrist to grind your morning coffee with Porlex Tall Grinder II, it is worth the effort. The first couple of times it was harder but it became smoother overtime to grind. The grind consistency is pretty good, however, the grinding levels are not accurate. I have to use level 18 for a pour-over which is higher than what the instruction recommends. But not a biggie, you'll figure it out soon.
After considering various hand-grinders, the Porlex came through as quality grinder at a good price. And it has impressed. It's sturdy stainless steel body and quality components help it feel like it will be running for years without too much trouble. I'm particularly happy with the ceramic burrs, helping the coffee stay unheated before being brewed. The capacity of the grinder is just enough for my partner and I; and if we have more people to make coffee for, it's easy enough to reload and grind more.Having to take the handle off to fill with coffee beans is easy enough and not too clunky, and the catcher feels secure while grinding and smooth to detach when emptying the grinds. And mechanism for setting the size of the grind has been fairly straight forward - as ... MoreAfter considering various hand-grinders, the Porlex came through as quality grinder at a good price. A well-recommended product!
I switched from a Hario Skerton Plus to this and I have been thoroughly enjoying the grinding experience with this one. It's easy to transport, set up, and clean up when done. The stainless steel material and the heft makes the grinder feel extra special and definitely worth its price. The design of the nut which allows the grinder to stand upright when disassembled is a nice bonus. My complaint with this grinder is that it doesn't come with the grippy rubber handle-holder. Although it's sold as a separate piece for the Tall grinder, as it comes with the Mini grinder, I have smaller hands so it's hard for me to maintain a strong grip for long. All in all, a great piece to own.
After a few weeks use this grinder is still excellent in my view. It completes 30g of beans in less than half the time of my previous grinder. The grinds (tech term?) are uniform in size. The grinder is easy to clean. The setting is easy to adjust and very reliable. The various parts are replaceable in the future. It really is very, very good.
