A dark, beautifully written YA fantasy

I really enjoyed reading Princess of Souls, a dark YA fantasy very loosely based on the Rapunzel story. The story follows Selestra, a teenage witch, the descendant of a line of witches in thrall to the tyrannical, immortal king Seryth. Her mother foretells deaths and feeds souls to the evil Seryth, so that he can maintain his immortality. The story starts with Selestra imprisoned in her castle tower, timid and resigned to her fate forced to serve Seryth, once her mother dies. Then she meets Nox, a soldier in the King's army who is driven to avenge his father, who was killed by Seryth. The side characters Micah and Irenya are also well developed. The witty banter among the foursome is a lot of fun.Princess of Souls is an imaginative and beautifully written adventurous fantasy.

Princess of Souls is a great YA fantasy story, full of forbidden magic, witty characters and a huge, detailed world.I was apprehensive about this book at first, as I didn't enjoy the previous book I read by this author, however I found this to be very engaging and well written.

Selestra is 16 years old, she has lived her entire life locked up in the castle, almost without contact with other people, apart from the king and her mother. The story begins at the Souls Festival; the king is immortal, he feeds on souls, freely granted in exchange for granting a wish to the person who survives a month, after having exchanged their soul, to date no one has been able to do so. It is the first time that Selestra will participate in the festival. Nox is looking for a prophecy on how to avenge her father and kill the king, but things don't go as expected, Selestra not only sees Nox' death but also her own. Between Selestra and Nox a strange alliance is created, for different reasons but the same goal, to finish off the king. The characters were fun, I appreciated Selestra's curiosity to see the world, not wanting to be a king's puppet, and looking for her path. She is brave and fierce. And as companions, we have Irenya and Micah, best friends you couldn't ask for.I enjoy the world-building and appreciate the map, I found the world simple, but lovely, with prophecies, myths, witches, gods, and magic. It's also a bit of a kissing story, but with tension and slow burn. The travel was fun, travel by hot-air balloon :D wonderful idea, we see nice places and it is when the action begins, fight and run.The Princess of Souls is loosely inspired by Rapunzel, but apart from a few references here and there, it feels like an original story, it's easy to read, and fun, with action scenes and witty characters.

Great fantasy, tons of action and tension
10 January 2023

Coming in at right around the 400 page mark, Princess of Souls is a decently long book, but it doesn't feel like it, with every chapter and sequence bringing something compelling to the table. The Rapunzel influence is there, but it isn't overt; if someone picked up this title without knowing that it would be an equally enjoyable reading experience in my opinion. One of my favorite things about Princess of Souls is how slowly we are given information about the magic of the Somniatis family, and Selestra's magic in particular. It's a central tenet of the worldbuilding, but remains shrouded to a certain degree for much of the book, which makes each small revelation a tantalizing crumb on the trail to a larger payoff. Princess of Souls is a Rapunzel-inspired YA fantasy romance about a teen witch names Selestra who has been groomed to steal souls for an immortal king. Following in the footsteps of her mother, she will become the next Somniatis Witch (the king's witch) who fortells death. Those who are able to outrun their fate are given the chance to steal the king's immortality. When Selestra touches Nox to read his fate, she sees that her destiny is entwined with his and they must work together to bring down a corrupt king. The romance in this book was definitely slow burn and full of tension and angst. Overall, I really enjoyed this book! It was fast paced with great world-building!

a fun read

I would say this is very loosely based off the story of Rapunzel. Instead of a fragile princess locked away in a tower and sporting an extremely long hairdo, Selestra is tough, taught by a soldier in the Last Army (though she doesn't get to try that out till after she leaves the castle) with green hair that though is long, isn't long enough to climb down (no matter what Nox says). She is also a witch and heir to the only magic left in the Six Isles. This was a fun book to read and I do like that Selestra is capable, though when she and Nox work together, they are unstoppable. And that is definitely what is needed to end the reign of the immortal king Seryth (a completely awful guy who eats the souls out of his victims to keep that immortality) and his all powerful ... MoreI would say this is very loosely based off the story of Rapunzel. There are lots of fun side characters like Micah, and Selestra's dressmaking friend, Irenya and sometimes I liked them better than Nox and Selestra. I liked also that it started with the festival but sadly it pretty quickly veered away from that. This is a good standalone book and I enjoyed reading it. Still not a fan of that cover though.
