The Paul Reed Smith SE 277 Baritone is a powerful sonic tool for guitarists who love down-tuned riffing and for players who need a vast array of new low-end colors for recording and performing. The two SE 85/15 S humbucking pickups on the 277 Baritone can be split to offer you both humbucking and single-coil tones. And the birds in flight inlays, the flame maple top, and the identifiable body shape exude unmistakable PRS quality. This SE 277 Baritone is sure to add new low-strung colors to your playing. Freshly updated, the SE 277 Baritone now features PRS' sleek violin carved top for optimized comfort and an incredible look! Baritone electric guitars have been in use with popular music for decades. Both '60s surf rock sounds and spaghetti western soundtracks were full of these down-tuned instruments. Not only did they offer their own muscular twang, but baritones were often used underneath the bass part — known as tic-tac bass — for more definition. Today, the baritone tradition is going strong with the aggressive lows of heavy metal, the resurgence of classic country, and even indie bands looking to expand their sound. Extended-scale instruments like the SE 277 Baritone offer sonic adventurers a way to find new chord voicings. The two humbucking pickups in this SE 277 Baritone are Paul Reed Smith-designed 85/15 S's. An update on PRS's original humbuckers, the 85/15 S is designed to sound terrific whether used in humbucking or single-coil mode. They offer you plenty of output for driving your amp hard, while sounding clear and detailed when you want. These SE humbuckers closely resemble the tones of the US-made versions found in the solidbody electric guitars crafted at PRS's Maryland factory.

So I hesitated on buying this Guitar because I just didnt care for the finish. Well It looks nothing like the pictures. Beautiful 3D flames in the top.Am Very pleased. So that brings me to what I expected from a PRS and didnt get, a playable set up. I know its an SE but the action shouldnt be 6mm at the 22nd fret. How QC at the factory allowed it to leave puzzles me. The pick ups are good for Drop C but even at B standard get really muddy on the lower strings. I put in a Nazgoul, Sentient set and these in another standard guitar. They sound really nice in standard E to drop C. IMO

Somebody called it a great big Tele. Exactly! Pull the dummy-coil tap pot and grin like a monkey with stuff like My Maria, Drift Away and Wichita Lineman. Push the pot back in, and you've got the lowest dirt distortion guitar out there. What a combination, all in the same guitar! I play a lot of bass so the extra scale length didn't bother me. It might bother people with small hands though. Definitely worth adding to your arsenal if you're a serious guitar player.

After a friend turned me on to his baritone guitar, I knew that I had to have one for my collection. Originally, I was looking to get the Gibson SG Baritone (I collect SGs), but couldn't find one for sale, so I started checking out other makes, and after a bit, decided to go with the PRS 277 Baritone. Generally, I won't buy a guitar that I haven't actually held in my hands first, but decided to go ahead with the online purchase through Guitar Center. I fully expected to have to get a set up performed on it too, but was pleasantly surprised that it came ready to go from PRS. The action was nice and low, the intonation was set correctly...perfect. I took my new toy home and plugged it in. Some of the other baritones I'd tried before getting this, had a muddy sound ... MoreAfter a friend turned me on to his baritone guitar, I knew that I had to have one for my collection. I took my new toy home and plugged it in. Some of the other baritones I'd tried before getting this, had a muddy sound when played in the lower registers. Not this one. It was glassy clear where ever I played on it. And it also came with an extra surprise; a coil tap switch that gave even more varied tone to use. The description I read online didn't mention that at all. Fit n finish are second to none and the sound is clear and strong. The longer scale does take a bit of getting use to, but not so much that I can't adjust. There is one thing that is lacking though; it comes with a GIG BAG. A guitar of this caliber (and long neck) requires a HARD case to protect it. So, to make this already too long review shorter, I'll sum it up by saying that I am very satisfied with this guitar and if you're in the market for a baritone guitar, you should most definitely put this on your short list. It would be a mistake to pass it by without giving it a good look.

Overall:The first thing one will notice when laying their eyes upon this guitar is how amazing it looks. The quality in the craftsmanship and the feel of the instrument meets any standard one would expect from a high quality instrument. The guitar is very responsive. Both to your touch and its controls. Using the volume and tone knobs allows for a variety of sounds as does the addition of the coil-splitting feature. The baritone cleans up well. Being someone who only plays on an overdriven channel and adjusts my gain level via the Volume knob to achieve different tone's whether they be clean or overdriven, it was important to me that this guitar cleans up well when rolling the volume knob back without losing overall volume. It's worth mentioning that this Baritone ... MoreOverall:The first thing one will notice when laying their eyes upon this guitar is how amazing it looks. It's worth mentioning that this Baritone is excellent for slide as well. It also came with a nice gig-bag which is good enough to carry it around, wherever that may be. An excellent product.
If I were to compare this to this Gretsch Guitars G5260 Electromatic Jet Baritone. I'd say the PRS SE 277 is much more comfortable (The body doesn't dig into your chest if you play while sitting down). If you're familiar with the ergonomics of PRS guitars - it'll feel right at home. It also isn't as long as the G5260 so someone familiar with typical guitar lengths shouldn't have any complaints. The tension on the strings from the factory were a lot easier to bend than the G5260 that I played.
I've owned another PRS SE for years (a 2007 Tremonti) so I was confident the 277 would be a quality instrument, and it hasn't let me down. Really good quality control and finish, arrived almost perfectly in tune and well set up, 23 hours after ordering (well done PMT!).Baritone tuning (B standard) is great fun, sitting more or less in between standard guitar and bass tunings, and it really unlocks creativity. I have come up with a ton of new ideas since I got this guitar! All those tired chord shapes you know suddenly sound cool again!I was surprised how easy it is to get used to the 27.7" scale length — it's not particularly noticeable coming from a 25.5", aside from the higher tension and wound 3rd string. You might be thinking baritones are just for chugging ... MoreI've owned another PRS SE for years (a 2007 Tremonti) so I was confident the 277 would be a quality instrument, and it hasn't let me down. Nothing that stops you playing in your bedroom and having a great time, but it's annoying to have to retune every few minutes when recording. I have upgraded my other SE with a GraphTech nut and Schaller M6 locking tuners, and I will be doing the same to this 277 as well. But that's a small complaint for an otherwise flawless guitar which is quickly becoming my favourite!
Was on backorder for a several months but definitely worth the wait. Immaculate build quality and great setup right out of the box. Plays like a dream, super tight lows. Looked at several baritone guitars in this price range and grabbed this one because it looked great and it came with a gig bag!
This, as you would expect from PRS, is a top-quality instrument. In fact, compared to my American-made PRS core range Custom 24, the quality is really very close - and given these SE guitars are a fraction of the price of the core models, that's saying something. The finish is flawless, and the feel is remarkably similar to my Custom 24, despite the different neck profile, slightly different balance, etc. The range of sounds is impressively versatile, with coil tapping providing a total of 6 pickup settings, and offers both power and clarity. I would highly recommend the SE 277 for anyone looking for a baritone guitar.
I don't like Guitar Center!! But, this instrument is only available through major dealers or online. I had to use Guitar to try the instrument. When I tried to make arrangements to try another guitar, the GC people (somewhere in New England) just blew me off - didn't return my call. That almost killed the deal. But, on the 2nd try, through a local store, I was able to order this instrument. GC will NEVER be my choice of places to buy gear - in this case I almost had no other choice! I don't like that at all!!!
