I have many Raspberry, all versions, in use running different projects.I follow airplanes using flyaware, monitor ships nearby using AIS, listen to air control towers with SDR, a personal VPN, home automation, alarm, among others. This new generation increase the usability. I'm working on a multi screen remote desktop (terminal server). Now, with bookworm and bios help, I can boot from external devices and from the network.

I love this kit; It comes with everything needed to get you started and keep you going! The case with the attached fan does an excellent job to keep the Raspberry Pi cool even under extreme load, mine rarely ever gets above 50C and the fan is off most of the time! The carrying case is also very nice on those long trips, keeps the Raspberry Pi well protected and clean as well, plenty of room for some accessories too. I was able to Overclock my Raspberry Pi 5 by 500mhz right out of the box without any voltage adjustments! Also, Vilros has some of the best customer support, very friendly, and answers any and all questions in a timely manner. Support these guys, and buy from them please, you won't be disappointed!

Fastest Raspberry Pi ever (so far)!

There is a huge difference in performance between the previous Raspberry Pi I owned (3 Model B+) and this one. Totally recommended if you planning to run CPU intensive tasks (compiling, benchmarking, etc.). For other things (e.g. running a Pi-hole or a Home Assistance instance) is totally overkill, and a cheaper RPi3 is more than enough. On the other hand, you will need active cooling yes or yes, or your RPi5 will throttle.

Finally, a Pi that can actually run a DE
16 September 2024

You got it right, this sucker can run a desktop. I personally despise the raspberrypi OS default desktop, so I still stuck with the raspberrypi os, but installed XFCE4, instead. It runs beautifully, as long as you don't overdo it. I've had multiple tabs open w/Firefox and chromium, as well as run Libre office, VLC, etc. For someone who only needs basic web browsing, email, etc, this thing works just fine. FYI, I do not run mine from an SD card, I actually run mine from ssd/hat, and that's what I'd recommend.

Great little package!
15 March 2024

After a hiccough in shipping (not Vilros' fault at all) It finally arrived. Very complete package and easy to assemble with included illustrations. I doubt I will ever need the second HDMI cable, but it's there. The whole package fits neatly within the provided bag for portability. It's a powerful Raspberry Pi. You could use it for a home computer if need be, I use mine for 3D printer management running Klipper. It could conceivably drive more than one printer at a time, but at the price, I wouldn't bother. Please know, this is a Linux system and could never serve as a gaming machine without a lot of computer knowledge, but the Pi series are perfect for servers and related machines.

Great new upgraded version
1 January 2024

I purchased the R Pi 5 4Gb board only from Vilros and was pleased that it arrived in time for Christmas. I have been using the Raspberry Pi for years and this is a significant upgrade at a great price.I used the Raspberry Pi Imager and loaded the 64 bit version of "Rasperian" for the R-Pi 5. The process went seamlessly, and I had my new Pi up and running in no time. Since I was already running a R-Pi 4 I had the micro HDMI and power cables. It booted right up but I saw the dreaded "lightning-bolt" in the upper right corner. It turns out that that the power supply for the R-Pi 4 is 5V@3A and R-Pi 5 requires 5V@5A! After resolving that minor issue, the new R-Pi 5 is running great. I did add heatsinks and a fan. The R-Pi 5 has a special connector just for the fan and if you use that the fan will only run when the temp is over 50 deg C. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.

The 2016 Mac Book Pro Replacement ;-)
8 April 2024

The Raspberry Pi 5 has enough power to be used as a mac book pro 2016 replacement for web browsing, blog post writing and more. It begins to suffer when playing video after several minutes. It works well with Raspberry Pi Os and Ubuntu. I failed to find a way to install NixOS for now but I didn't devote hours to the task.I read plenty of articles that say "get a thin client" or "get a litre PC" but the advantage of the Pi is that although it seems expensive compared to other solutions it has a good selection of additions. If you install Ubunto then snap installing Nextcloud and docker packages like Photoprism, AudioBookShelf and Immich is easy.I found that Snap install Nextcloud does not work with Raspberry's version of the OS.If you buy the heat sink and the ... MoreThe Raspberry Pi 5 has enough power to be used as a mac book pro 2016 replacement for web browsing, blog post writing and more. Keep the lid off. If you place the white piece of plastic to close the top it will heat up.I found that if you use the wrong power adaptor with a hard drive connected the drive will power up and down continually. The OS only warns you that it is underpowered with the default OS, not Ubuntu.

Things have gotten better
27 January 2024

I had a Pi 3B for a while, so had some backround with this kind of computer. Being retired I now have the time (and maybe a little patience) to do some things with this platform so went ahead and ordered the Pi 5 8GB kit with all the trimmings. To my surprise it came rather quickly and I spent an afternoon getting everything put together and hooked up to a cheap but effective HD monitor. Ten seconds later I'm looking at a pleasant low key desktop running Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm. Nice and very snappy. I'm relearning how linux works and this is just the ticket. Very pleased with the whole experience.

Very fast. Comparable to a modern day intel laptop CPU. Specal rpi USB-C charger required to run without throttling.
25 November 2023

Purchased a pi5. Significantly faster than the older pi's. Is able to run modern desktops with bells and whistles enabled. Plays videos up to 4k without any slowdowns. Does not come with a power supply. You MUST use a raspberry pi 5 power supply only. No other USB-C supply has the 5V5A mode required to run the pi5 with everything enabled. If you run it on lower power modes it turns off GPIO and other features and throttles CPU. No other supplies available for USB-C has the required 5V5A mode, not even the most powerful ones. It has the form factor of a pi3 but the HMDI and USB power ports of a pi4. Old pi hats work on it.

Works

The board works well for the most part. I am using this board as a day to day computer, so not in a way most people would use it for, so I my experience does not likely relate. You are not going to run zoom through it and the internet browsers like firefox are a bit slow, but then that is not what you are getting the board for. For non-browser day to day tasks, such as vim, gdb, inkscape, mplayer, or other linux tools it seems to work well, though I have had some odd crashes on the PI OS on occasion. I have yet to try this on an other linux distro, but I plan to at some point. The cost is not bad, when you consider you are getting 8 Gigs of LDPR 4 ram. However, for people getting these boards for projects, the cost is a bit high. The major con I found is that the micro HDMI cables are hard to find and that most usb-c power supplies do no provide the recommended 5 amps. The PI still runs, but it also gives you a warning. So, you will want to pick up the official power supply for best operation. If you plan on transporting this back and forth, then I would recommend picking up multiple power supplies.
