2 Pairs, shoes different sizes on each.

I bought my Hawthorne Muleskinner iron rangers from a local Red Wing store. They were out of stock so they shipped directly from Redwing. First pair, on 10.5 D, the left shoe was a half inch wider than the right shoe. And I don’t mean the sole, I mean the leather portion of the shoe like it was an ee. I returned to my local store and they had another pair shipped to me. The replacement pair is better, but still different sizes. This time the right shoe is significantly larger. Also, when compared to two other pairs of iron rangers, I have that I bought from a store, the hawthorn in the same size are visibly much larger (wider) and fit way too loose in width. Will be returning these too. At this point it’s becoming too much of a hassle to buy iron rangers.

When you wear this shoe, anyone who compliments… just knows- it’s a brand and pretty iconic…I had mine for 7 years while working in the trades- unfortunately i neglected mine to a point of no return and ended up replacing them with new ones. Break in was not really that bad and once they’re broken in- they fit perfectly.Just take care of the leather with your brushing and conditioner. These can last for years!!!!!A+ in quality and craftsmanship- will buy again and again..

These have been the easiest-to-break Red Wing shoes I have ever owned.Compared to their Moc Toes I had zero breaking in period and zero blisters. I think it all comes down to the Hawthorne Muleskinner leather and their bulbous last.Overall very comfortable for me right out of the box and the sole is actually surprisingly easy to flex. I find I have no issues with them being too hard on my feet and can wear them all day but if you want a softer and more springy feeling you can just put insoles and they will give you extra cushioning which is not needed for me.Overall I love them and suspect I will be wearing them for many years to come. Great Boots!
12 July 2024

Really good hardworking boots. Got these to wear in rotation with my moc-toes, love the Hawthorne Rough-out leather. Wears in really well and break in period is next to none. Will need to get some insoles now though, seams the leather has broken in but I need a bit of lift to snug up the fit.My only dislike about the boot would be the sole. I do like the Vibram 430 Mini lug but it seems that the soles are just a bit to short for the size of the boot in terms of length. There is a noticeable click when I move from midfoot to toe. I am going to resole them anyways with another Vibram sole but thought I'd put that out there.

Great boot terrible eyelets
20 January 2024

I had to send in a new pair I bought in 2023, they had already replaced the original pair, all due to the eyelets that you tuck the string under bent downward and you couldn’t get the lace off. I have a pair of 2218 work boots (redwing discontinued btw which is crazy) and I’ve never had that same issue. When it happened again I sent them back to Redwing and they swapped them out to the smaller 2218 style that are not prone to getting bent. I sadly had to go to Nicks boots now since Redwing stopped making the 2218. But satisfied with the Iron Ranger now that we got the eyelets swapped out

I love my Muleskinners!
6 June 2024

I have a pair of IR's in Copper Rough and Tough, which are seconds from another site, that are awesome boots, and been wearing them for about 4 years off and on, but at 10 1/2 are just a little big, so when I set my sights on the Muleskinners I went down to 10 and these boots fit great! I can't wait to break them in, very happy with my boots, and I want to say that I have never had an order show up so quickly from an online retailer. I ordered these boots on a Tuesday evening (thanks for the 20% off!) and two days later I am wearing them! The smell of the leather is fantastic, just look and feel awesome, and will be ordering again!

Made me a fan for life!!
18 November 2023

Absolutely in love with these boots and have been since I picked them up and took them out of the box. I'd be a liar if I said they were comfortable right out of the box but after some tough love and wear they've started to mold to my feet fairly quickly. The Hawthorne is rugged and looks amazing with little upkeep and I'm stoked to see how it patinas with age, the Vibram 430 mini-lug sole is a little rigid than what I'm used to but offered great grip and plenty of support when hiking recently which impressed me given the low profile!! All in all, I could keep blabbing on but I think half the fun is wearing them yourself and seeing where you can take them! 100% Recommend without a doubt, USA MADE BABY!!

Outstanding Boot - Love the Hawthorne Muleskinner
18 February 2024

I love the leather on these boots. It's high quality and beautiful and wears very well without any real upkeep or maintenance. My only complaint is the break-in around the collar. The way the very back of the collar hits my legs, it's rubbing and chaffing against my socks leaving painful horizontal marks on the back of my lower calf. I bought another pair in Copper Rough & Tough and don't have this issue at all (have worn another pair in amber harness for 20 years without this issue too). I think it's because the muleskinner leather is not as stiff so it doesn't hold a round "leg shape" like the stiffer copper leather. I hope in time it will break in to hold a rounder shape against my leg instead of laying so horizontal and cutting/rubbing across the back of my ... MoreI love the leather on these boots. For the price, nothing compares to the Iron Ranger. It's a fantastic boot that you can have and rebuild for many years if not decades. Sure you can spend twice the money and find even better boots out there, but short of custom handmade boots, Iron Rangers are some of the best I've ever worn.

Softest leather used on Iron Rangers
7 November 2022

This is my sixth pair of Red Wing boots, second pair of Iron Rangers. If it's good enough for Jack Reacher (TV series), it's good enough for me. Joking aside, the Hawthorne Muleskinner leather is soft from the start. There was very little break-in on the outer leather. The leather insole will take some time to mold to my feet but that's normal. The light brown colour goes beautifully with medium blue wash denim. If you prefer to maintain the same look for your leather from day 1, this leather will be tough to do so.In typical Red Wing fashion, these run large. I buy a full size down but that varies from person to person and last type. If this is your first pair, get your feet measured first if you can.Overall, I'm very happy I added this to my collection of ... MoreThis is my sixth pair of Red Wing boots, second pair of Iron Rangers. Solid quality and build but the leather is more like suede
21 December 2023

Like with all Red Wing shoes, the quality is outstanding. However, this Muleskinner leather feels more like suede and given it's light colour, I am concerned it will be very hard to maintain. It probably can make a good summer boot, but I am afraid if it is exposed to the rain it will be very hard to clean. As the case in point, the shoes arrived with some dark spots on them although they were obviously new and unworn. Most likely those dark spots developed from paper and carboard rubbing against them in the box.The shoes fit very large - I needed to size down a full size: my usual size with Asics or Merrells is 10.5, and for this shoe size 9.5 fits just right.
