I'm going to aim this review at filmmakers, so if you're a VO person looking for a shotgun, disregard this. If you have some good front-end EQ, the NTG3 can produce great on-set results. I know there's something to be said for capturing a bass-y signal for EQ purposes later, but let me tell you; this thing is BASS HEAVY. I can't stress that enough. BASS HEAVY. Also, as other reviewers have pointed out, it's not as directional as other options. This can either be a good or bad thing depending on your intentions. I first used this out with a pretty good mixing system. I had to do some crazy EQ on the spot, but it sounded great. All we did in post was the usual stuff/no real extra work. When I used it with just a Tascam DR-70D later, I was nervous. I was confident I could milk a good sound out of the signal in post, but it took more work than the usual stuff. If you're recording something that needs to go straight to broadcast, unless you're doing some significant EQ on set, this mic is not going to work. The reality is though, the NTG3 can give you a signal that's just as good as other options- if you have the time to work with it later or are using a relatively professional recording system on-set. After some post work, I actually liked the NTG3 better than the usual German Industry Standard option. This is, of course, a matter of taste. So the NTG3 is the definition of mixed bag. I would say that if you're not very familiar with audio production, don't get this mic. No mic is a magic bullet and the NTG3, even with a hi-pass filter, is just going to frustrate you. I can emphasize with the new generation of DSLR shooters who just want a good mic that they can mount on their hot shoe and not think about. But this is not that mic- and that mic does not exist anyway. We all wish it did. On the other hand, if you're somewhat familiar with audio, the NTG3 can produce interesting and pleasing results. It may be good to have in addition to other options as a more artistic choice. Just be aware you're going to need to finesse it a little.

I compared this mic in a shootout with a NTG-2 in a series of 11 interviews in a corporate setting. The NTG-2 sounded a bit harsh in the upper mids, and in general just felt very inconsistent with how it handed voices from person to person. The NTG-3 felt a lot more consistent, had a stronger bottom end, smoother midrange, great clarity in the high end, and stronger cancelation with high end roll off on room tone.

I tested this mic out the day it came in and it sounded like there was a rainstorm in the background and some electrical hissing. The XLR pins were all uneven and slightly off looking.I got this mic because everyone said it was industry standard. Come to find out, they just stole the design from the Sennheiser MKH-416. I returned it and bought the MKH-416 instead.

Excellent mic for the money. Can't complain. The build appears to be a single piece of machined aluminum, with a little connection point toward the bottom, which is really nice. I think a couple things to note when purchasing this mic: It does not have a AA battery module like its Sennheiser counterparts. It will only work with a source capable of outputting phantom 48v. Its a considerably thinner tube than most shotgun mics. This is a bit of problem when using a third party shockmounts. I've struggled to find a usable standard female 5/8 threaded shockmount that will work with this mic. I'm finding a lot of the mounts are cold-shoe based, which is only useful to a DSLR shooter. Also, if you are using a run-n-gun camera setup with a built-in mic holder, like a C100 ... MoreExcellent mic for the money. Can't complain. Also, if you are using a run-n-gun camera setup with a built-in mic holder, like a C100 or Fs7, it will not fit properly, and require some adapting. These are not problems, just noteworthy points. No complaints or issues with the mic itself. Great clean sound.
Let me start by saying I'm not an audio guyI do a lot of corporate, training and documentary style of work, while I have a few different mics in my kit, this one is certainly my favorite and most versatile.I have found this mic to be a great step up from my entry level shotgun mics in terms of build and sound quality. It also seems to be a very forgiving for non sound people, often when I don't have a sound guy either using a C-stand or a boom with a production assistant I'm often pleasantly surprised with results I get with just recording this into my Zoom h6.I'd recommend to anyone just starting out with sound or to solo operators who are looking to up their who aren't looking at investing in something like a CMIT 5U
I ordered this kit, nervous about the quality and researched a great deal. I watched reviews of the NTG3 mic online and the quality was continually talked about as one of the best microphones in the field.I received the package in a week and must say I was happy with everything being so beautifully packaged, clean and protected. The boom pole itself came with two different cords that work for different lengths, as well as two filters for the shotgun mic. The audio from the NTG3 is crisp and professional indoors and outdoors. The only disclaimer I would give anyone thinking of ordering this kit is that it comes with XLR cords therefore, it is impossible to use unless you have a handyrecorder. In order to record your audio with any of the equipment in this kit, you will need something to plug your actual mic into...I would recommend something from the ZOOM series (Zoom H5, H6). Most people spending this kind of money on a mic know this, but just trying to help out anyone who might think this is a simple 'plug into camera' situation. It is next-level and requires extra care and caution when handling. If you're on the fence about this purchase, I would seriously praise the quality of the entire kit.
The Rode NTG-3 is an exceptional mic; Rode's best boom mic. It produces beautiful quality sound; very rich and smooth and clear, and very quiet. I have compared it extensively to my industry standard Sennheiser MHK 416 (with spoken voice, indoors, at relatively close range.) It is almost in the same league, just a small step below. It does not capture quite as much voice "texture" and does not have quite as much midrange clarity and three dimensionality and the sound does not come from quite as black of a background. Although it is rich sounding it does not capture the deepest lows with quite as much authority. It also generates just slightly more self noise. Although it is rich sounding it does not capture the deepest lows with quite as much authority. It also generates just slightly more self noise. On the other hand it is more sensitive (4-6 db) than the 416 so you can keep the gain lower which means less noise from your other electronics which at least partially offsets the slightly higher self noise. The NTG-3 and MHK 416 are virtually identical in diameter and length, but the 416 is slightly heavier. It has a SLIGHTLY wider pickup pattern than the 416, which is either a plus or minus depending upon your needs and application. To say it picks up every noise in the room as one reviewer claims in my opinion speaks much more to the reviewers lack of understanding of boom mics and/or the technique they use as opposedto anything about the mic itself. The increased emphasis on low frequencies in general and slightly less high frequency emphasis compared to the 416 make it an excellent choice for female voices. Really all voices sound great with it other than maybe the deepest male voices which may get slightly muddy. (Although that can be fixed with a little EQ.) I like the way my wife's voice sounds better on the NTG-3 and prefer the 416 for my voice. At the same time I still love the way my voice sounds with the NTG-3. The bottom line is the Rode NTG-3 is a phenomenal microphone for the price. To come as close as it does to the MKH 416 at $300 less is quite an accomplishment. Many people may not even notice the differences I pointed out above. The bomb proof easily transportable case is a great bonus also. It should serve just about any needs out there including in the professional realm. It's hard to imagine how anyone could go wrong with the purchase of the Rode NTG-3 microphone as long as they know what they are getting and how to use it. I am extremely happy with my choice to own this mic!
Many consider the NTG3 a world class shotgun microphone and I agree 100%. Many Industry Professionals consider the NTG3 a very robust & tough microphone. It also sounds is very precise and perfect for Dialogue as its round and articulate. Where as the NTG5 is Neutral and Natural sounding. They compliment each other perfectly. Thank you Rode Microphones.
Purchased this mic and two days later did a series of interviews at an incredibly noisy expo conference. Used a 9 foot boom pole picked up from BNH also, Ved directly into the Sony FS7 camera. Pick a pattern was perfect for us, even with noise that we could not yell through and hear each other the mic performed flawlessly. The sound was warm and natural. Highly recommend this Mic, definite improvement over the NTG2. My producer liked it so much he is buying one for himself.
I do youtube reviews and I wanted a mic with really good clarity and my goodness! The Rode NTG3 is absolutely amazing, the matte-black finish to the microphone looks good and the mic overall feels really sturdy. I hooked this thing to my Zoom H6 and I set the gain to about mid level(between 5 and 6) and there is no hissing. Beautiful sound and super clear. I watched a ton of youtube reviews before buying this watch so make sure you do your research well but all I can say is you won't be regretting the quality of this mic. 10/10
