I was looking for an inexpensive microphone for my DSLR that would reduce or ideally eliminate the camera motor noise while doing video, as well as one that would reduce or eliminate wind noise. So far, the product seems to do both reasonable well. Another reviewer mentioned the problem of the microphone flopping downwards. Like that viewer, I find myself using a rubber band to hold the microphone horizontal to the camera body. In addition, the dead cat does not stay secure over the microphone; If I happen to hold the camera straight down, the furry slides forward, uncovering the microphone. Since I'm moving around a lot to do bird photography, I have to constantly remember to pull the furry back over the full microphone (the furry does not slide off, but...who ... Really great microphone if you're on a tight budget. I purchased this microphone to go with my iPhone Vlogging setup and it works wonders. The only thing I noticed about the mic was whenever it got super windy the wind cuff didn't really work and would cut out at times the audio. This happened to me by a beach where the winds were pretty strong. Also if you're planning to use this with an iPhone vlogging setup you will need a TRS to TTRS cable from Rode and also an adapter for lightning to headphone jack if you have a later end device. The cable itself is already another $15 so a downside of the microphone. Other than that this microphone is pretty decent for what your paying. Would recommend for beginners out there!

Great sound quality for such a cheaply priced mic. Fits perfectly on top of my DSLR. It is design a little strange. But I think it’s because it’s to stop the mic from have feedback from moving the camera? Maybe I think. Not 100% sure tho. But works well. I did notice that it definitely is directional as in you sound better being in front of the camera. So while filming my children my voice sounds a tad bit far away. Most won’t be able to tell. But I can And it’s fine. Because this mic is way better than any built in mic. You can’t go wrong.

Awesome mic to attach to smartphone or dslr on the go. It has a wind guard, good extension to cable (windy style stretches easy) and sound quality is noticably improved compared to not using a mic when testing both with and without, with video recording on a Canon Rebel DSLR and for Video and Audio Notes on an iPhone Pro. Mount works for DSLR shoe, but not mountable on smartphone, a clip included to make this possible would be a useful update for future models. You pay top end dollar for Rode products.
I bought this item for quick voiceovers and short ASMR baking videos after seeing the reviews; however I wish I didn't. The sound is completely muffled and goes in and out like I'm underwater or as if there's a blanket over it? This is with the dead cat OFF too. My connections are tightly in place and I even go into the closet to film for the best sound quality, and I still get a weird muffled result. My phone microphone is more crisp and clear than this microphone which is such a bummer. A let down from a highly rated mic company
This is a great little set if you are on a budget, but still want some microphone that works really well and has a professional sound recording quality. Rode is one of the best microphone companies out there, and doing research I have bought one of their most popular condensing microphones as well as this camera microphone set. Of course it's not super cheap, but it's because it is nice quality! I would say it's pretty good value otherwise, and pretty easy to set up, the only issue is you gotta make sure you have other set up for the camera if you like to use the playback screen to see yourself while recording, my Sony Alpha is compatible with this mic, but it sits right on top which is where the screen flips back up to. So you can't see yourself with the mic on, so I bought a tripod that I could put the mic on next to the camera. Moreso a design flaw of the camera, but it would be nice if maybe this camera came with another rig option, otherwise a great addition to my production family! Good for all kinds of purposes if you want to level up your sound!
Hello all, The review is mixed for the Rode VideoMicro Ultracompact Camera- Mount Shotgun Microphone. The windshield works great on windy days. However, the audio is only capable of capture at a good level from 5 feet away. Also, I think the microphone is omnidirectional, meaning, it picks up sound from all directions. So, if there is a lot of background noise, it is captured loudly, as well. On the other hand, if U are using for indoor sound capture, it works great!!!
A solid performer. Lightweight, with a good shock mount. I can mount this on camera mounted on a gimbal. My camera had only a 2.5mm jack socket, but no real problem to solder on a new TRS 2.5mm jack plug. A sound upgrade from your cameras built in mic for sure. There may be higher spec sound recorders that work off camera, but they come at a price and involve extra work. There are Rode clones that may be slightly cheaper. Frequency response rolls off at low frequencies on the Rode compared to other types, which is not necessarily a bad thing, besides you can apply eq in post. No hesitation giving the Rode a 2 Thumbs Up!
I bought this for video vlogging on not just my Iphone 12 pro, but my Sony A6400 camera that I bought from Best buy as well. The dead cat (fuzzy grey piece) does slide off nicely to reveal the mic in case you do not want to use it. Personally, I did video testing sound with wind and noises with both the dead cat on and off, it seemed to sound better and not as muffled with the deadcat OFF. Great quality sound and I no longer have to be super close to my Sony A6400 for vlogging on trips and other events. Easy to carry around in a camera bag too!
Would recommend for vloggers, which I’m not, more so than podcasters, which I’m trying to be (@lifesriddlespodcast - Spotify, YouTube, Facebook). Seems to make a decent shotgun mic for just being above the subject and out of frame, if you have a stand to get it there. But I didn’t need it for that purpose. It’s highly recommended by many of the top YouTube experts. If you’re using an iPhone, DO NOT forget to buy the correct adapter. It doesn’t come with the correct one and you’ll never figure it out without diving deeper into YouTube videos about this product. It comes with a trs cable. But you need TRRS for the lighting adapter piece that is an extra cost in order for it to work.
