The remote is similar to the one for my previous Roku (a Roku Express, now upstairs with the bedroom TV)--so similar, in fact, that it took some work to figure out which went with which Roku when I put the new remote down next to the old one without thinking. One reason I love Rokus is that there is so much available for free. It's simple to use, and it works very well.

This is a very small version of my larger Roku’s. I was replacing a Roku 3 with many many hours on it. The higher quality AND much higher price of the 3 may be the reason I am disappointed. This is a ‘special’ Roku manufactured for Walmart and thus stripped down. The remote is similar to my other one but no microphone and no on/off button. It’s pretty lightweight. This little version was more challenging to finally get to load and work. Once it was installed it went through 100 updates. Not joking. 100 (about 25 min). This baby Roku seems to have a close picture quality to my old Roku 3 but it has to ‘load’ every ‘channel’ application you’ve already got downloaded EVERY TIME you watch it. After installation it’s slow but really worth the $18 versus $69 that I paid for the 3. Overall, if you can’t afford a better more expensive Roku then this is definitely worth the price but don’t expect allot of extras. Honestly reminds me of buying a no options base model car with no air, manual windows, etc. versus one with power seats, heated seats, gps, etc.

I was an early adapter of Samsung smart TVs when they came out but eventually it got laggy and then updates were no longer support and then eventually app couldn’t be installed without updating my OS which Samsung no longer supported so my smart tv became dumb. If I could buy a 75 inch dumb tv I would and I’d use these fire sticks with it. Since they don’t make large dumb TVs I’m not buying any new TVs. Bugger would be better but I’m sticking with what I got. I’ve used other streaming devices but Amazon fire sticks are my favorite.

Can't activate - Black screen

Well now we know why there's a reason why it's as cheap as the Express and why ROKU stopped making these. It's a quad-core so it's supposed to be smoother. However, once you attempt to activate, it prompts to download the latest updates. That update, cancels and disables the device to "activate" it. ROKU likes to have you go through the usual run around until the final solution. The "Solved" indicated in their official forum, chat and phone service, is to basically return and exchange until you find one that works. Save your money, it's a 50/50 product IF you can get it do actually what it's supposed to do (link device to account and activation failure). Roku has just about every app you can imagine (YouTube/Pandora/Netflix/Amazon/Hulu/HBO Now) plus tons of more apps in many different categories.Roku Premiere 2018 works fine, but you need to point the remote at the device, unlike other Roku models. Here are some points to consider when deciding on which model of Roku to buy:1)If you need to connect by WiFi in a room far away from your WiFi router,I would recommend the Roku Streaming Stick PLUS or Roku Ultra.2)If you have a 4K TV,I would recommend the Roku Ultra or Roku Streaming Stick PLUS.3)To search for content using your voice,go with either the Streaming Stick,Streaming Stick PLUS or Ultra. All 3 of these models also have a remote that can control the power and volume on your TV.There is also a Roku app for Android & iPhone/iPad that lets you use your smartphone/tablet to control any Roku device and use your phone/tablet on-screen keyboard or voice for searches.4)If you want a wired ethernet connection,go with the Roku Ultra.5)If you want to connect to an old TV with RCA/Composite audio/video jacks, you will need the Express PLUS6)The Express and 2018 Premiere models have a remote where it has to be pointed at the device, unlike the other Roku models.7)If you are only going to buy one Roku device,I would recommend the Roku Ultra. The Ultra has many unique features that the other Roku models don't such as:-Gaming buttons to play video games-Remote finder to find a lost remote control-Ethernet port for a wired connection-Micro SD card slot-USB Port-Night listening mode (this lowers the volume of loud, explosive sounds and raises the volume of soft sounds like whispers.Very useful!!)-Headphone jack on the remote for listening without disturbing othersFor those who have not used a Roku before, here are some tips that might be helpful:1)There is no monthly fee to use a Roku. There are many free channels/apps with free movies, music and TV programs and some people use Roku only for the free channels and do not pay any fees. You do NOT have to enter credit card info if you only wish to view free content and you can always add credit card info to your account later for paid channels/apps.If you plan on viewing free content only,I suggest setting up a Roku account before you activate the device. When you reach the page to enter credit card info, some browsers will show a "Skip,I'll add later" option at the bottom. If you do not see this option, simply log out of your account, then log back in.You may have to then enter a different activation code for your device if you skip entering credit card info during device set up,but you do NOT have to enter credit card info if you only want to view free content.2)Some of the most popular free channels/apps are: YouTube,Pandora radio,The Roku Channel,Pluto TV,Tubi TV,Crackle,CBS News,NBC News,ABC,PBS, PBS KIds and many more. You can also find a free live stream of FOX News on YouTube by searching "Fox News Live" on YouTube.3)Some of the most popular paid channels/apps are Netflix,Hulu,Amazon video,HBO Now,Vudu,Sling TV,Spectrum TV and Direct TV Now.4)If you are looking for a bundle of channels of live TV to replace cable TV,check out Sling TV,YouTube TV,Spectrum TV,Direct TV Now,Hulu,Pluto TV and Playstation Vue.All of these are paid services except for Pluto TV,which is free.5)To find and add new channels on Roku, just press the Home button on the remote control, scroll down and select "Streaming Channels".There you will find thousands of channels/apps in many different categories and many of them are free.My one gripe about Roku (and other streaming devices) is the lack of a fully functional web browser and I hope Roku will include web browsing on models in the near future.I have been surfing the web on the big screen for years and find it ridiculous when an internet connected TV device does not allow you to surf the internet and forces one to switch to yet another internet connected device to do so.I am aware of screen mirroring function from smartphone/PC/tablet but find that a poor excuse to not include a web browser. Many people who type a lot of messages and/or emails like myself prefer typing on a wireless keyboard rather than a phone/tablet/remote control.Bottom Line:You can now get a Roku device to to replace your cable TV box & service or to replace an antenna for free local network TV.

Great long term add-on streaming TV box.

A great addon device even for newer SMART TVs and almost essential for older one or non-SMART TVs. Especially for the Black Friday price of $20 for the Premiere 4K box. The only sad thing is that this is an older Roku model that is halfway through its support lifetime - probably only 4-5 years left. That and its only 2.4Ghz WiFi though surprisingly is good enough for two boxes at 4K if little else is steady competition on that network band.Roku line up of apps is better than regular Smart TV fare. And my experience says that Roku keeps updating and maintaining the OS and apps after purchase as long as the hardware can handle it (years). This Roku device is really good and I really like them but there's a downside for but I'm going to save it for last. The first thing I like to point out is that it has Dolby Atmos and DTS audio supported to those who have a sound bar and two satellite speakers and one sub hooked up to a TV, I took my audio settings and they work on 5.1 surround sound systems straight out of the Box if you have a soundbar connected to it.So once you click on a home screen before you go to the app section, there's no ads. It's a simple to set up and it uses just my phone just to sign in to my roku account, getting out of apps downloaded for example YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon prime video and so on and so on.Once when I got the Roku from the mail, the box is very simple when I ... MoreThis Roku device is really good and I really like them but there's a downside for but I'm going to save it for last. It's a simple to set up and it uses just my phone just to sign in to my roku account, getting out of apps downloaded for example YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon prime video and so on and so on.Once when I got the Roku from the mail, the box is very simple when I open it, very good unboxing experience, it's not hard to take things out.The battery installation for the controller a super easy and simple, the plus sign in both sides of the battery enclosure is in the same side even though the minus are doing the same side too. That's what other brand should do on the TV market, Soundbar market, and streaming devices market such as a fire stick from Amazon or a Mi Box S from Xiaomi. Now here are the cons:First off let's take a look of the app support, one of everybody else's favorite video game live streaming app called twitch.tv is not supported even though it used to be beck then.Next once you are about to select an app on your home screen, there is an ad in the right of the screen which is not a big deal to me but it is for some people,No Google Assistant supported even though it is supported on google home as you can still control your vocal with an external Google Assistant speaker in my case it is the first generation of Google home mini. There is no way you can put your own Google photos or Amazon photos to the screensaver even though that Chromecast does let you. When you hit play on any video, movies, and casting music from the phone to the TV via Spotify, there is a delay and cut the first two seconds of the audio. But I don't know if it's a soundbar thing or Roku's on software. It may be different if you don't have a soundbar that case it is.Overall, is a really good experience, it looked very good and plays nicely with my soundbar. I really like this because it's a simple, the most odd for streaming box I could find for cheap without having to go to the Apple TV route even though I have an Android phone.

Kind of bumbed

So far it is ok but it would have been nice if ther was information letting one know that this runs on your modems 2.4 gig system. There is no way whatsoever of connecting to a 5.0. This system does not even recognize that there is anything other than a 2.4 option. I would have gotten a different model if I had known this. No where in any of the Roku discriptions could I find any mention that the programs ran on a dual modem or any information about this at all. I think this is very out dated and when I finally was talking to someone at Best Buy about Router/modems and streaming systems etc. It would have been nice if these things were mentioned to me instead of my having to find these things out after I had bought the products and was trying to install everything ... MoreSo far it is ok but it would have been nice if ther was information letting one know that this runs on your modems 2.4 gig system. I am getting a lot of buffering which I was told would not happen with the products I bought. The quality is good when it is not buffering. So I do not know if it is the modem. The fact that it is running on the say part of the system as everything else which is what I was trying to avoid, or if it is something Comcast is doing.

Roku Premiere 4K is WiFi 802.11b/g/n. If you want WiFi 802.11ac, you need a different Roku model.

Roku Premiere 4K is WiFi 802.11b/g/n. If you want WiFi 802.11ac, you need a different Roku model. With that said, this Roku Premier streams 1080p fine on 25Mbps DSL via SmartRG SR516ac 802.11ac gateway. It also streams 1080p fine on 50Mbps Cable via Hitron Coda 802.11ac gateway. I haven't tested 4k yet, for either DSL or Cable.I mainly stream via PC, but had a need to set-up a TV so that it could stream Netflix and a couple foreign language streaming channels. The last time I played around with Roku was over 7 years ago. Luckily, I still remembered the password to my Roku internet account. If you don't use a PC, I'm not sure how one goes about setting-up a Roku account. If you don't use a PC, I'm not sure how one goes about setting-up a Roku account. Maybe there's an app?Attaching the Roku player to the TV was straightforward,, but I was caught off-guard when the player required activation by e-mail within 30 minutes. The e-mail I used for my Roku account was on a computer that was more than 30 minutes drive from the TV I was setting-up. I did my best to get to the computer but it was more than 30 minutes by the time I got there. Fortunately the e-mail was caught in spam, and when I released the e-mail from spam, the activation button still worked. For Netflix and the other streaming channels I installed, it was a bit cumbersome using the Roku remote to enter login e-mails and passwords, but in the end it was fine. Navigating Netflix via Roku is very different from navigating Netflix via PC. The other streaming channels also felt different, like something was missing. But for what I paid, the Roku more than delivers,To make sure that no one would be denied Netflix due to too many simultaneous users, I recently upgraded to the 4k version of Netflix. Streaming on my PC to my 4K monitors, I don't really notice a huge difference in image quality. Maybe there's some smart upscaling at play. I plan to upgrade one of the 1080p TVs to 4K soon, but I don't expect too much difference in image quality for streaming.

Saving $8.50 a month ...

... on my Xfinity cable bill. Using this Roku, I was able to return one Xfinity cable box (X1 converter) from a room that I only watch TWO channels, MSNBC and CNBC. Think of that, $8.50 a month so you can watch TWO channels (yes I had the choice to watch more, but at this location in my home, my office, those TWO channels are all I watch, and most of the time they're only on in the "background"). So I returned one of their X1 converters, and am saving $8.50 a month off my Xfinity monthly bill. Downloading the "Xfinity Stream Beta" app from the Ruku channel store (for free), got me the SAME Xfinity guide I used with their cable box, and the TWO channels I watched. Well worth the under $30.00 I paid for my model Roku. "The TV Man"
